SOME EXPLANATORY LISTS AND GRAMMATICAL TEXTS
By Thkophile James MEEK
The following texts from the collection in the British Museum were copied byme during the summer of 1914, but due to the exigencies of military duties I have
been unable to do much with them until the present time. Rather than delay longer
their publication I am postponing to a later time a more complete editing of the texts
and am contenting myself now with merely the publication of the plates.
The texts are largely Explanatory Lists, together with some Grammatical Texts,
and a few Syllabaries, unfortunately only partially preserved. They constitute
practically all of the tablets of their kind that remain unpublished in the Museum.
A goodly number of the tablets are fairly complete, while others are more or less
fragmentary, it' will be noted, however, that the smaller fragments in most cases
contain glosses and so are of importance. The tiny fragment, K. 7696, is significant
in that it contains several new signs. I have arranged the plates in the order of the
Museum numbers of the tablets as making for ease of reference. All of the texts
are here published for the first time, with the exception of a few which are republished
because of the corrections made on former editions, e.g. the following were published
by Langdon : K. 5433a in RA., XIII, 192: K. 8315 in AJSL., XXVIII, 243; and
Sin. 9 in RA., XIV, 20. A number of duplicates of previously published texts
appear in this collection, of which the following may be noted : K. 4212 is a duplicate
of II R., 26, No. 1;K. 9887 of II R., 62; Sm. 1701 of CT., XIV, 10
;and Th. 1905-4-9,
Recue cCAssyriologie, XVII. 16
118 THEOPHILE JAMES MEEK
1 of II R.(14 f. In each case considerable additions are made to the text as previously
published.
Experience has shown me that it is quite impossible to make absolutely accurate
copies of tablets without a very complete editing of the texts with the originals
readily at hand. In the present instance this has of course been impossible, so that
1 cannot claim infallibility for my copies. But I trust that the mistakes are few and
of such a nature as not to impair the value of the texts. In work of this kind
accuracy is of course most desirable and I have ever aimed at a faithful reproduction
of the original.
I desire herewith to express my sincerest gratitude to Dr. E. A. Wallis Budgeof the British Museum, whose suggestion it was that I copy these tablets and who
so generously put at my disposal all the facilities of his Department. I cannot speak
too highly of his many kindnesses which made my sojourn at the Museum so pleasant
and so profitable. I also owe a great debt of gratitude to the management of the
Revue d'Assyriologie for the publication of the texts.
