    issued

    by the Umayyad and

    early

    'Abbsid

    Caliphs

    poses

    a

    challenging problem

    of attribution

    which

    has

    theretofore received

    the

    attention

    itdeserves. Where

    were

    dinars struck?

    It

    would

    be a

    matter

    of

    great interest

    to

    how

    many

    mintstherewere and

    justwherethey

    were

    forthese are

    facts

    that

    would be of no little

    value

    in the

    of the

    economic

    and

    political development

    of the

    early

    empire.

    Quite recently,

    in

    article

    M . Marcel

    Jungfleisch

    has brought

    forward

    some

    very

    ious arguments which will

    not

    fail,

    I am

    sure,

    to stimulate

    interest

    in

    this

    question.1In the

    present article

    I submit

    y preliminary

    contribution

    It is quite

    obviousthat

    any

    attempt

    toassign mints to the

    dinarslacking mint-names

    must

    be based upon alargemassof

    material

    either examined

    at first

    hand

    or eise

    accurately

    de-

    scribed

or reproduced in theHterature.A cursorystudyof the

    subject is enough to

    convince

    one

    that

    many,

    perhaps

    the

    majority of the

    published

mintless dinars have not been ac-

    curately

described or reproducedthat is, the minute

    details

upon which arguments and conclusions must rest have not, in

    general, been conscientiously

    reported,

    M.

    Jungfleisch appro-

    priately

    draws

    attention

    to

    this

    fact. My

    good fortune, above

    referred

    to,

    imposes upon

    me the

    prime

    Obligationof

    placing

    be-

    fore

    the

    Student this important body

    of

    material.

    WhileI

    doubt

    that any

    definitive

    conclusions can be reached

    before

    a great

    many

    moredinars have been accurately

    described,3

    I have in

preparation for publication a detailed summary of the reliable

    material heretofore published, together with

    specific

    arguments

    for

    the

    attribution

    of

    over

    100of the 279

    varieties

    of'Abbsid

    mintless

    dinars whichIhave been abletodistinguish.

    These

    attributions (many

    of

    them quite tentative)

    are

    limited

    to the

    dinars issued afterthe year

    169

    A.H.;in other words I have

    at-.

tacked the problem at the easier and more vulnerable end, for

inthe last 30 years of the second, rfnd the first two decades of

    the

    third centuries

    of the

    Hijrah,

    before

    mint-names begin

    to

    appearregularly

    on the

    'Abbsid

    dinars, there

    are

    many

    more

    3

    Howgreatlysimp lifiedtheproblem wouldbe

    if

    provenanceandhoards

    were

    recorded.

    Consider,forexample,theBaghdad

    hoard

    of30,000 (?)

    dinars

    whichcame to

    light

    on

    the banks of theTigrisin

    1897,

a part of which is apparently still preservedunpublished

    inthe

    Istanbul Museum

    c f.

    E.V. Zambaur

    in his

    obituary

    of

    Halil Edhem,

    Mitteilungen

    derNum.

    Gesellschaft

    inWien,II(XVIII), 7,1940,p. 131).

    Thesewere mostly 'Abbsid

dinars of laterdate, but there may have

    beenearlier

ones among them. In any case,

    here

isanexampleofunpublished material which puts whathas so

    far

    been describedin the

    shade.

Anotherexample is the great Ermitage collection which has been inventoriedonly

    in the

    most summary

    fashion.

    clues

    for attribution

    than

    thereare in the

    earlier period.

    My in-

    tention in

    thus

    working

    backwards,

    so tospeak,is toprovidea

    firm

    basis

    for

    further

    study

    and for the

    eventual determination

ofcriteria for the attribution of the earlier issues.4

Itis myhope that the present articlemay

    induce

    readersto

re-examine the pertinent dinars in their possession or under their

care, and to publish, or otherwisemakeavailable, their fmdings.

    With

such additionalmaterial I might anticipate making the

studyIhave referred to amore usefulonethan it

    would

    other-

    wise

    be.5

    Inpreparing this publicationIhave taken intocon-

sideration over nine hundred dinars published in the scattered

numismatic literature in addition to those described in the pres-

    ent

    article.Thismight appear

    to be an

    impressive

    number; but

    the figure is

    deceptive,

    for

    although

    I

    have excluded many whose

    descriptions

    are

    obviously incomplete

    orfaulty,I

    have also prob-

    ably

    included averyconsiderable numberwhichshould for the

    same reason, in a lesser

    degree,

have been excluded.6 It can, =

    therefore,

be readily appreciated that the accretion of additional

    completely reliable evidence cannotfailtohaveafavorableeffect

    onthestudyand itsconclusions.

    Herewith

    the listof

    dinars

    in the

    three collections referred

    A detailed

    examination

    of M.

    Jungfleisch s

    arguments,

    with

    whichI

    fear

    I cannot

wholly agree, will appear in its proper place. In brief,he is disposed to see in certain of

    the

secretpoints indicators of theinitiallettersof thenamesof them intsatwhich given

    Particulars

    aside,

    I

    feelthat

    a

    much larger body

    ofevidence

    must

    be

    assembled

and that the argument must be built,

    s

    I say, upon a more secure foundation;

andit is forthese reasonsthatIamapproaching theproblemin thepresent fashion.

    s

    I

    would

    welcome

    andgratefully acknowledge descriptions, castsorphotographs for-

    warded
