Hello Bettie,

I can't thank you enough for such a quick reply. Some of that information I already had but the part I didn't have answered quite a few questions. One report had Isabella Sutherland Gunn born in Bellefontaine, Ohio. I knew that couldn't be. Another located in Hardin County or Logan County Ohio history says she was the daughter of Colonel Sutherland and born in Pennsylvania. I doubted that too.

The truth is that Isabella's father, Walter Sutherland was a United Empire Loyalist in the American Revolution and was the Adjutant to Colonel Commandant John Johnson in the King's Royal Regiment of New York in 1776. After the war, the Loyalists weren't very popular and Walter Sutherland fled to Montreal, Canada. He and his wife, Nancy Ann Campbell had a daughter Maria in Montreal in 1783 and Isabella probably in 1784 or 1786 (if she was 74 years old in the 1860 census) . They also had John in 1785, Elizabeth in 1789, Barbara in 1791, Ann in 1793, Catherine in 1795, Walter in 1798, Humiah in 1802 and Moses in 1806. Quite a family.

John Gunn Sr., born in Scotland in 1770 or 1775, went to Montreal with the British military in 1800. Obviously, he met Isabella there as she was the daughter of a military father and they went first to Malden (near Boston) first and finally ended up in Wapakoneta, Ohio in 1806. Reports say he married Isabella there in 1805.

John Gunn Jr., their son, married Emily Garrett in 1844. You already have that history.

Walter D. Gunn, born to John Gunn Sr. and Isabella in 1812 was my great grandfather. He was a surveyor and died after surveying in the cold and catching pneumonia in 1863 just before my grandmother, Susan Effie Gunn was born. Susan later married Daniel Webster Gross in Ada, Ohio who was a teacher and later a medical doctor until near his death in Worthington, Minnesota. Their son, Walter Gross was my father after having an extra-marital affair with my mother, Nellie Foss from nearby Canby, Minnesota where I was born. I didn't find out about this until after my mother's death in 1985 but I always suspected my real father's identity was kept secret. My father, Walter Gross was a dentist. In 1986 I had a meeting with my half-brother Dennis (son of Walter Gross) in South Dakota and we looked like twins. He is a few years younger than I. One of his sons looks

exactly like one of my sons and since then, through other family members, the connection has been confirmed.

I don't want to bore you with all this but since you were kind enough to reply to my email, I thought you might be interested. I will be going to Ohio in 2006 to visit the Gunn farm, the Gunn Cemetery in Lynn Township, and the McArthur Township cemetery where Isabella Garrett and that family is buried. Fascinating stuff!

Just for the record, I am 66 years old and married Jacqueline, my fife, a French girl, in France in 1958. We have 3 children in their 40's and 4 grandchildren. I would enjoy hearing a little about you if you don't think it is too personal. Such as where you live, age, etc.

1786 in Canada.6,10,23–25 The 1850 Federal Census shows her age as 56, which would put the year of her birth at June 1793 - May 1794. She must have been fudging her age, as this would have meant she was only 10 years old or so when she married John Gunn in 1803.

The 1860 Federal Census shows her age as 74, which would put the year of her birth at 1786. This would seem more reasonable as she would have been age 17 or so at her marriage in 1803.

According to the "Descendants of Private Charles White": "Isabella Southerlain(sic) was a beautiful French lady. She lived after her husband's death and lived on the land grant for many years. She died in 1864. She was the mother of four daughters and three sons."

Isabella SUTHERLAND and John GUNN were married on 25 Jun 1803 in Christ Anglican Church, Montréal, Quebec, Canada.1,6,10,20,26–27 The book, The Loyalists in Ontario by William D. Reid, indicates that John Gunn is from Amherstburgh.

They were married by Reverend Jehosaphat Mountain. They moved in 1804 to Logan County, Ohio.6,20 There he settled on McKree Creek, where during the War of 1812, he kept a tavern and lent aid to the United States Commissary Department for which service he received a warrant for 160 acres of land in Hardin County in Ohio. They moved to Fort Malden, Amherstburgh, Canada.6,20,28 The Malden being referred to is most likely Fort Malden, Ontario, Canada, not Malden, Massachusetts. Note Wapakoneta is in Ohio.He was a trader among the Indians. Isabella and John moved to Wapakoneta, Ohio.6 They moved to Hardin County, Ohio.6,20 His young bride rode on horseback with all of her wardrobe, china dishes, silver packed in two trunks and carried on pack mules. The John Gunn buried in Keppler Cemetery was born in England about 1880 and died in 1875. This John Gunn's wife was named Mary and was born in London in 1802. John Gunn is indexed as John Gum in the ancestry.com 1820 Federal Census. In the 1820 Federal Census there are a total of eleven (11) individuals listed in his household. There were three (3) males under ten years old, presumably, Walter D., John R. and Robert G., two males between twenty-six and forty-five, and 2 males forty-five or older. Presumably, one of those over forty-five is John Gunn himself as he would have been about fifty years old at the time of the 1820 census. The others may have been hired hands or boarders. There was one female under ten years old, presumably Isabella S., and two females between ten and sixteen years old. Presumably, one of those may have been Anne Belle. The other remains to speculation. There was one female between twenty-six and forty-five years old. That most likely was Isabella Sutherland, his wife, which brackets her year of birth between 1775 and 1794.

His age is listed as 50 to 60 on both the 1830 Federal Census and the 1840 Federal Census. This might indicate his birth date was on or near 1 June.

"JOHN GUNN, SR., was born in Sutherlandshire, Scotland, in 1770. He was educated and intended by his parents for a military career, but finding that life distasteful, he engaged with the fur company by the name of "Innocent Grant." to trade in the Northwest with the Indians; he had a trading post at Wapakoneta in 1806. He was engaged in fur trading, buying and selling hogs, cattle

and horses, until the war of 1812, when he enlisted in Capt. Black's company, serving to the close of the war. In 1805, he married Isabella, daughter of Col. Southerland, of Inverness, Scotland. After the war, John Gunn removed his family to Bellefontaine, Ohio, where he was engaged in various kinds of business, until the time of his death, which occurred in 1842. He had three sons and four daughters-Walter D., John R. and Robert G. First came to Hardin County in 1843, and made a deadening of twenty acres, part of the farm on which the family of John R. now resides, calling same the "Forest Farm," the name it still bears. In 1845, he removed to his farm, where his family now reside, and where he lived till his death. He never took a collegiate course, but having a natural turn for mathematics, studied surveying and engineering. His theory was "for one to find what they were best fitted for, then apply themselves to that calling." Robert and Walter Gunn graduated at Oxford in 1842. The three brothers loved each other dearly, were always together, and in their business transactions were as one. John R. and Robert G. were agents for lands in Hardin and Logan Counties, held by parties living at a distance. John R. was once elected Justice of the Peace, twice County Surveyor, the last term of which had not expired at the time of his death. His last work was the straightening of the Scioto River Channel for draining the surrounding marsh. He was so anxious for the work to progress rapidly, and winter being the only time when it could be done, he took a violent cold which settled on his lungs and ended in death. He was often called on to settle disputed territory, while holding the office of County Surveyor; he surveyed and settled the disputed line between Hardin and Logan Counties, which had been a bone of contention for a number of years, both counties claiming the right to tax the land along the line. The brothers were stanch Democrats, and leaders of their party. John R. Gunn married, in 1844, Emily Garrett, daughter of Tira Garrett, a Virginian by birth, who came to Hardin County in 1842. The latter bought 300 acres of land, where the County Infirmary now stands, and lived but three years after coming into the county. His wife was the daughter of Charles White, of Kentucky, a Revolutionary soldier who drew a pension, and died at the age of ninety-nine years. Robert G. never married; he died in Hardin County in 1850. Walter D. died in Hardin County in 1863, leaving a wife and four girls. Isabella Gunn, wife of John Gunn, Sr., made her home, after her husband's decease, with her son, John G., for several years, then bought a farm of 160 acres, to which she removed with her youngest daughter, Eliza, and remained until the time of her death in 1869. Her daughter Eliza remained on the farm, having never married, until 1882, when she left. for New Mexico, where her two nephews and one of John R. Gunn's sons are engaged in surveying and dividing the Indian Territory. Isabella Gunn's remains were interred on Forest farm with her three sons and one daughter. Of the seven children remaining are Eliza, already named, and Isabella, who married Alexander Given, residing in McDonald Township, Hardin County, Ohio." (History of Hardin County Ohio)

"The records show that in the year 1805 John Gunn took out a license in Urbana to keep a house of public entertainment. Accordingly, about that time, or shortly afterwards, Gunn established a tavern stand at a large spring on the farm now owned by Henry C. Miller. The location of this tavern was in the northeastern part of the present Township of Liberty. This spring is about 350 yards from the southern limits of Lake Township. It is one of the finest springs in Logan County. Those who have located this tavern and spring upon the farm of Henry Taylor are in error. Mr. Gunn was a Canadian; his business here was to act as agent for certain holders of real estate situated in the neighborhood of his establishment. During the prevalence of the war of 1812, there was, of, course, considerable stir in the vicinity now under notice, for it was in the direct track pursued by the American troops, both going-to and coming from the seat of hostilities on the northern frontier.

It was about this time that it became evident that a new county would soon be organized, and it was upon a portion of a tract of land for which Gunn was agent that the first town in Lake Township was laid out. It was called Belleville. An attempt was also made to christen, by usage, the nascent county, Belleville County." This little town was intended for the future county seat. That it was built, if not under the direction, at least with the approbation of Gunn, and in the interests of his employers, is evident from all the circumstances. This seems to be a fair account of the rise of

Belleville, and the reasons for it. The town grew up silently during the turmoil of the war.

The old settlers appear to have no very definite idea of the exact date of its origin, or of the precise moment of its demise. It is known, however, that the first and probably the only tavern built in Belleville was owned by Edwin Mathews. George Krouskop came to this country in 1812 or 1813, and he worked upon that building soon afterwards. It would have been difficult to find a worse place for a town in this township. Water, for a wonder, was difficult to obtain, the wells being deep and the water itself of a poor quality. The whole affair was a matter of eight or ten inferior houses. Mathews kept the first public house, and was followed by Garwood and Ballard. One " Dr." Emanuel Rost, from Cincinnati, a foreigner by birth, kept a small store, containing a few groceries and notions. Isaac Miller had a saddler shop at the same place. There was no blacksmith shop, nor, so far as recollected, other place of business in the town.

Belleville had a rather hard reputation, upon the whole, and excepting Gunn's it was the only centre of common congregation in the neighborhood. In its latter days, it was the place of holding county court a few times. There was a great deal of fighting and quarreling, as well as dog-fighting, race-running and other rude pastimes indulged in there. This village dwindled away very soon after Bellefontaine was laid out. A small frame house belonging to Isaac Miller was hauled bodily to Bellefontaine, and the other buildings were deserted and suffered to decay. Belleville was situated about a quarter of a mile south, and a little east of the $oral hall on the county fair grounds.

There was very little to boast of in the way of public roads in the period of time anterior to the settlement of Bellefontaine. There was but one main road in the Township of Lake that was worthy of the name, previous to the organization of the county. There were various paths or trails leading from one Indian settlement to another. These trails were worn deeply by much travel. Some traces of them can even yet be discovered, especially leading east from the region of Gunn's old tavern to Zanesfield. The Indians would ride usually about forty feet apart in strict Indian file. In this way the hindmost Indian would escape the rebound of the bending branches of overhanging trees, after the foremost rider had thrust them forward from him. The principal road came from Urbana, and passed through this county in a northerly direction. Coming into the neighborhood of Lake Township, it crossed McKee's Creek a few feet west of the point where that stream is spanned by the Cincinnati, Sandusky S>; Cleveland Railroad bridge. It continued almost directly north till it approached the western side of the Round Prairie. Here it divided. One branch skirted the southern and southeastern edge of that prairie, and continued in a northeasterly direction until it reached Gunn's tavern. It then made an abrupt turn to the north, a little west, to the town of Belleville.

The other branch of the road continued up the western side of the Round Prairie, and, after pursuing a northerly direction nearly a mile, it turned easterly and joined the former road in the village of Belleville. The roads being united, proceeded north across the fair grounds, crossing the Blue Jacket, at the point where Cook's old mill improvement stands. After fairly raising the hill, it turned to the northwest, following the ridge a few yards north of Judge West's house. It continued in that direction until it crossed the C. C. C. & I. R. R., between the houses of John Brunton and John D. Nevin. It then pursued a northerly course until it reached the site of 'the Irwin stone house; thence it skirted the hills until it reached the vicinity of Menary's Block House, near the buildings on the old Beal farm. From that point it went a little westward to McPherson's Block House, now the site of the County Infirmary.

The military road, cut by the army of Gen. Hull, in its advance upon Detroit, passed through the southwestern corner of Lake Township. "Hull's Trace," as it is called, crossed McKee's Creek at the same point that the old road did. It kept nearly north, passing a little east of William Burkhart's house. Continuing in a direction a little west of north, it crossed Blue Jacket at the farm of Jacob Good; thence pursuing the same course crossed the Sidney road near the house of Mr. Dillon; thence pursuing a course nearly identical with the former, it arrived at Menary's s Block House and joined the old road already described. From there it pursued a direct course to the Block House of

He was a surveyor and died after surveying in the cold and catching pneumonia in 1863 just before my grandmother, Susan Effie Gunn was born. Susan later married Daniel Webster Gross in Ada, Ohio who was a teacher and later a medical doctor until near his death in Worthington, Minnesota. Their son, Walter Gross was my father after having an extra-marital affair with my mother, Nellie Foss from nearby Canby, Minnesota where I was born. I didn't find out about this until after my mother's death in 1985 but I always suspected my real father's identity was kept secret. My father, Walter Gross was a dentist. In 1986 I had a meeting with my half-brother Dennis (son of Walter Gross) in South Dakota and we looked like twins. He is a few years younger than I. One of his sons looks exactly like one of my sons and since then, through other family members, the connection has been confirmed.

John R. was once elected Justice of the Peace, twice County Surveyor. The last term had not expired at the time of his death. His last work was the straightening of the Sciota River channel for draining the surrounding marsh. He was so anxious for the work to progress rapidly, and winter being the only time when it could be done, he took a violent cold, pneumonia set in his lungs and ended in death. He was often called on to settle disputed territory, while holding the office of County Surveyor. He surveyed and settled the disputed line between Hardin County and Logan County which had been a bone of contention a number of years, both counties claiming the right to tax the land along the line.

John R. never took a college course, having a natural turn for mathematics, studied surveying and engineering. His theory was for one to find what they were fitted for then apply themselves to that calling.

He had two brothers, Walter D. and Robert, and one sister, Isabella S. Their father, John Gunn, was born in Sutherlandshire, Scotland, in 1770; emigrated to Canada in 1800 with the English Army, in which he served several years. He finally settled in Montreal, thence at Malden, and from there went to Wapakoneta, as a trader among the Indians in 1804. In 1808, he removed to Logan County, Ohio, and settled on McKees Creek. where, during the war of 1812, he kept a tavern and rendered aid to the United States in the Commissary Department, for which services, after his decease, his widow received a warrant for 160 acres of land. He died in 1842. His widow survived him inane years and died in 1864. John R. married Miss Emily Garrett in 1844, about two years after having settled in this county. He became a resident of Lynn Township in 1842, with his two brothers, Walter D. and Robert, all of whom followed surveying, and many lands of Union, Logan, Hardin and Champaign Counties were surveyed by them. John R. Gunn was an active, enterprising business man, and became a large land holder, owning 1,000 acres or more. He took an active part in all the public improvements of his community, in the building of roads, schools and churches. His children were as follows: Mary A., Clara, Angus, Agnes, Alice. John M., Kenneth C. C., Florence V., Elgin and Robert.

John M. Gunn whose name appears on the INSCRIPTION ROCK, with the date, June 12, 1884 was born in Hardin County, Ohio, Oct. 6, 1860. He came to Laguna, New Mexico in 1881, where he worked for a time as a surveyor for the Santa Fe railroad, surveying the right of way through this section. He mapped the country and helped construct the railroad west. He surveyed other parts of the state also, then only a wild territory. He became friendly with the Indians and organized the tribes in war. He served as First Lieutenant of the Laguna troop of Mounted Militia in the Apache war. They made one or two expeditions during which Geronimo and his band were driven from that part of the country. He also served for several years in the Territorial Militia, reaching the rank of Captain.

When the Apaches were subdued and the railroad completed, he joined his brother Kenneth C. C.

Gunn in the cattle business, and for thirty years they developed the BAR 15 Ranch south of Laguna.

In 1893 they built a grist mill at Laguna, which they enlarged in 1903, until it had a capacity of forty barrels a day. In 1904, they established a mercantile store at Laguna under the firm name "GUNN BROTHERS".

Mr. Gunn located large beds of lithographic limestone which were later operated by the New Mexico Pumice Stone Company. He learned the Pueblo and Navajo languages and was one of the first census takers of the Navajos. He gathered old myths, traditions and historical facts of the Queres Indians of Laguna and Acoma. A part of the history was published in "RECORDS OF THE PAST", edited by the Reverend Henry Baum, D.C.L., of Washington, D.C. in 1904. He published the book, "SCHAT-CHEN", which contains more historical facts, traditions, and narratives of the Queres Indians, in 1917

Mr. Gunn passed away on August 6, 1938 at the age of seventy seven (77) years at Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Ron Fernandez told me that is consistent with his rememberance as a child of hearing that Kenneth C. C. Gunn remains being removed from the plot in Laguna to Fairview because of a dispute over land between the Marmons, Fred and ???, and the Laguna tribe. According to Gail Gottlieb, in her book, "Our Grandmothers' Kitchens", Kenneth C. C. Gunn came to New Mexico with the Cavalry which had been charged with securing the right of way for the railroad.

Bennie was the grandson of the late Col. Walter Marmon, who Walter Street in Albuquerque, is named for. Edith St. in Albuquerque is named for Bennie's grandmother, Edith, wife of Col. Marmon. Lew Wallace, author of the epic novel, Ben-Hur, was Col Marmon's best friend. Mr. Wallace actually wrote the initial chapters of Ben-Hur in Laguna. Bennie was preceded in death by his parents, Robert O. and Howyce Marmon; and nephew, Robert Benjamin Lorenzo Sr. He is survived by his two sisters, Irma Mason and Edythe Lorenzo; three nieces, Marlene Johnson and husband, Fredrick, Luana Gaco and husband, Gilbert, Alice Salinas and husband, Dave; two nephews, Wesley Mason Jr., and Mike Ray. Also surviving are his great-nieces and nephews, Edyie Marmolejo and husband, Felipe, Ronnda Poncho and husband, Dominic, Joey Natseway, Karen Luther, Anne, Chester and Paul Ray, Phillip Cherino, Julie Johnson, and Erma Cherino and husband, Sergio; great-great-nieces and nephews, Preston and Phillip Marmolejo, and Brandon and B.J. Chavez. Bennie is also survived by his many loving numerous relatives. The staff at the Laguna Rainbow Center also became his extended family who loved him dearly and he loved them dearly in return. Diego Abeita was born in 1905; his father's name was Louis Abeita. Diego Abeita married Lottie G. Abeita and they had two children, a daughter, Louise and a son, Richard. Deigo Abeita attended the University of New Mexico for about two years in the 1920s. He was self-employed as a rancher, and raised Hereford cattle.

Diego Abeita was very active in Pueblo Indian affairs. He was the first Chairman of the Middle Rio Grande Pueblos Irrigation District, from 1951 to ca. 1977. Abeita often acted as spokeperson for the Irrigation Committee. Abeita was a member of the Isleta Pueblo, and served as lieutenant governor for the Pueblo of Isleta. He also served on the Isleta Tribal Pueblo for 30 years and was a trustee of the Bernalillo County Indian Hospital.

Wallace was a native of this area and lived most of his life in the area. He and his wife, Mary operated the Villa de Cubero from 1937-1972. He was active as a member of Lebanon Masonic Lodge in Gallup since 1946, in addition a member of the Scottish Rite Santa Fe Lodge of Perfection, and Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, as well as being a former member of the Lion's Club. He served as a member of The County School Board for many years, and was instrumental in obtaining funds needed for the building and development of Laguna High School through his lobbying efforts in Washington, DC. He was also a pioneer aviator in the early years of aviation. Visitation will be held Thursday, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Grants Mortuary Chapel. Christian and Masonic Funeral services will be held Friday, 10:00 a.m., at Grants Mortuary Chapel with Fr. Emeric Nordmeyer O.F.M. officiating. The bride was attired in a navy blue ensemble with accessories to mach and wore a corsage of pink roses and lillies of the valley. Miss Milan was gowned in a rust colored ensemble with a corsage of Talisman roses.

A buffet luncheon was served at the home of the bride's parents immediately after the wedding ceremony, with only members of the immediate families and a few intimate friends present. No special color motif was used at the Milan home for the luncheon but a wealth of cut flowers afforded a simple decorative scheme.

Mr. and Mrs. Gunn left in the afternoon in their private plane for a wedding trip by air, planning to be away about two weeks after which they will be at home about March 14 at Cubero where Gunn is associated wilh the Cubero Trading company.

Mrs. Gunn is a graduate of the Gallup high school and has always been an active member of the school alumni association. She is a past grand regent of the Catholic Daughters of America, Ave Maria lodge, No, 315. She is a charter member of the Gallup Business and Women's Professional club and was one of three delegates who went to Yellowstone Park in June to attend the district convention of B & P clubs.

At the age of thirteen, Kenneth was sent to the Indian boarding school in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He graduated from there at the age of sixteen at which time he entered the University of Southern California (USC) in 1938. At one point he was the President of the Engineering Class. He graduated from USC in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering (BSEE) degree.

He obtained a direct commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps upon graduation. He was sent to attend graduate school in Cambridge, Massachusetts at both Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He began work at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory (AFCRL) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

While in the Boston area he met his future wife, Dorothy Bangs. They were at the Coconut Grove nightclub just a short time prior to the famous fire there that killed so many people.

He later worked at AVCO, Sylvania, Parametrics Industries which he founded with others from Sylvania, including Appollo Bougas, George Edmundson, et al, and later Raytheon.

He built a house on Old Road to Nine Acre Corner, Concord, Massachusetts around 1949 to 1952. He later purchased an older Victorian home at 60 Hubbard Street, Concord.

Lee Francis, an educator of Native American (Laguna Pueblo/Anishinabe) and Lebanese heritage, received his Ph.D from Western Institute for Social Research, Berkeley, CA and his MA and BA degrees from San Francisco State University. His university appointments included Visiting Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico and Interim Director of Native American Studies department, and the American Studies program at The American University, Washington, DC, where he also served as Director of the Washington Internships for Native Students (WINS) program. He also served as Director of the Pre-Engineering Intensive Learning Academy for Native students at California State University Long Beach, Student Affairs Officer at University of California Santa Barbara, Associate Director of the Educational Opportunity Program at San Francisco State University, and Senior Faculty with Meta-Life Adult Professional Training Institute.

New Mexico. Lee's expertise in Native American Studies areas included: Literature (Oral and Contemporary), History, Contemporary Society (Political - American Indian Policies; Social - Reservation and Non-Reservation; Native Americans and State/Federal Relations; Health).

Lee's government service included appointments as Indian Youth Specialist with the U. S. Department of the Interior's Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs (BIA) Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention - where he was Editor of Prevention Quarterly, Legislative Assistant to United States Senator Hugh Scott (former Minority Leader of the U.S. Senate), Special Assistant to U. S. Senator Pete V. Domenici, and Staff Assistant with the Joint Committee on Congressional Operations of the U. S. Congress. He also served as a proposal reader for the U. S. Department of Education's Javits Gifted and Talented Program and the Indian Fellowship program which funds Native American university undergraduate and graduate students, the Department of the Interior's Water Resources Training program, U. S. Department of Education's Vocational Education program, the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) Secretary 's Fund for Technology as well as proposals for Field Initiated Studies and At-Risk Institute.

Dr. Francis was actively engaged in a number of research projects. He studied Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as applied to cultural groups, describing the research in this area as cultural idiocide. Other research interests included the national problem of homelessness, testing models to radically decrease racist behavior in urban communities, and evaluating prevention programs designed to impact alcohol and substance abuse among Native American Indian populations.

An engaging and powerful speaker, Dr. Francis enjoyed speaking to large and small groups on a variety of topics. He was regularly invited to speak to organizations throughout the country. Lee gave Keynote Addresses to audiences throughout the United States and Japan. He was an Invited Speaker at international, national, and regional conferences where he spoke on a wide variety of topics. Lee Francis died in July 2003.

Awards Lee Francis was awarded the 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers' Circle of the Americas.

Lee was a Trustee of the Laguna Pueblo Educational Foundation and a member of the editorial board of Michigan State University Press American Indian Literature Series, East Lansing, Michigan. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Albuquerque Indian Center, the Native Writers' Circle of the Americas and the Greenfield Literary Review Center. He was an elected Life Member of the National Psychiatric Association.
