The commonly used term Functional Safety has become a central concept for controlling unexpected disturbances in the areas of transportation, power plant construction, the chemicals industry, and machine construction.
New standards have been introduced for plant construction. And for the construction of fi eld devices. IEC 61508-2 (on the functional safety of safety relevant electrical/electronic/
programmable electronic systems) was also developed. It pertains to the manufacture of suitable safety-relevant components for the chemical engineering sector. The introduction of the Machinery Directive RL/2006/42/EC homonizes DIN EN ISO 13849-1 (Safety of Machinery – Safety Ralated Parts of a Con-trol System – Part 1: Gerneral principles for design) and also calls for „Functional Safety“. FEMA by Honeywell, in cooperation with our service partner EXIDA, had the standards-
compliant development of our PTS- and PTH..-A2 2-wire pressure transmitters veri-fi ed. Further, in the context of an FMEDA in late 2011, we determined the parameters necessary for the calculation of Functional safety for all our mechanical pressure switches and thermostats.

Explosion Protection is one of the most important aspects for personal and environmental safety, in the context of continually changing process enginee-ring and manufacturing technologies. Numerous changes in standards – e.g., the new regulations pertaining to dust explosion
protection – necessitate increased vigilance in rechecking design type approvals. FEMA by Honeywell has taken this fact fully into account in re-approving its tested and proven EX-pressure switches and thermostats acc-ording to EN60079. In doing so, customer demands were taken fully into account and
both the expansion of ex-zones and the inclusion of devices according to ex-a („intrinsically safe“) included in the certifi ate. Dust explosion protection has been achieved with ex-t („protection by means of housing“).

In the production and processing of petro-chemicals, it is essential that pressures be reliably registered and transmitted. In this context, the selection and testing of the right materials for parts coming into con-tact with the media is just as important as obtaining the necessary legal certifica-tions for these applications.
In the case of pressure monitors used for flammable gases, the Gas Appliances Directive (90/396/EEC) and the correspon-ding harmonized norms are mandatory. In the case of pressure equipment for moni-toring pressurized vessels with nominal pressures exceeding 0.5 bar, the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EEC) is the relevant regulation.
Frequently, processing in the context of oil and gas products require explosion protection. Thus, in Ex-relevant zones, only explosion-protected field devices (e.g., conforming with ATEX or IEC-Ex) may be employed. Components for safety-relevant control circuits must conform to the para-meters established by IEC 61508-2 and/or EN13849-2. FEMA pressure monitors of the DWR,SDBAM, DWAM, and DGM series for the areas of oil and gas fulfill all of these requi-rements, and are thus ideally suited.

Using FEMA pressure switches, differential pressure switches, and pressure transmit-ters, it is possible to safely and reliably monitor and limit pressures and differential pressures and to transmit them to central control units. FEMA pressure switches and pressure transmitters with SIL classification and / or certified according to the Pressure Equipment Directive are especially well-
suited for use in water purification plants, wastewater treatment plants, and to boost pressure. In water tanks, pressure trans-mitters are used to display the filling level and prevent overflowing. In pump stations, pressure switches and differential pressure switches provide protection against dry-running and are used to control pumping.

In air conditioning and ventilation systems, blowers and filters are monitored by measuring the differential pressure. Using differential pressure switches, it is possible to, e.g., transmit readings to a central con-trol unit as soon as the filter has attained a specified degree of contamination. Differen-tial pressure switches can be employed both for the continuous monitoring of filters
and the control of pressure differentials between rooms or zones. Frost protec-tion thermostats protect against freezing and flow sensors provide information on the condition and performance of blowers. Explosion-protected thermostats are avail-able for simple temperature control in storage rooms and industrial processing systems.

WE PAY ATTENTION TO MUCH MORE THAN JUST THE TEMPERATURE
In ships and diesel locomotives, but alsocarnival rides (e.g., roller coasters), pres-sures and temperatures must be monitored. Thus, pressure switches and transmitters can be used to monitor shafts, the tank level, as well as the hydraulic and pneu-matic control.

VACUUM FURNACES / METAL REFINING
Metallurgical heat treatment is an essential part of the manufacture of tools for the ma-chine and plant construction sector. In this context, vacuum furnaces are employed in tempering, annealing, soldering, and sin-tering metals. After the batch is entered into the vacuum furnace, the furnace is evacua-ted. It is then heated up, and the product is quenched, and – depending upon the type of steel – the most-suitable cooling medium (e.g., nitrogen or argon) is employed.
The appropriate safety device is the DCM506 Pressure Switch, which is used to monitor the opening of the furnace door. Those parts of this pressure switch in con-tact with the medium are made of stain-less steel, and is characterized by the fact that it is vacuum-proof and can monitor pressures extending from the low millibar range to a maximum permissible system pressure of 12 bar. DCM and DWR Pres-sure Switches are likewise employed for monitoring system pressures in the area of the cooling medium. At the same time, the pressure switches are SIL-certified and conform to the requirements set forth in DIN EN ISO13849-1.

WE ENSURE THE SAFETY OF YOUR MANUFACTURING AREAS WITH EXPLOSION HAZARDS
Installations in which explosive gasesor dust mixtures can occasionallyappear must be assessed and dividedinto zones according to the 1999/92/ECATEX Directive. The resultant explosion-protection document represents the basis for determining what explosion-protected components are needed. Such installation components are planned andmanufactured according to 94/9/ECATEX. The suitability of such components for corresponding zones must be verified by means of sample testing. The quality of the equipment is ensured by means of an audited Quality Management System as well as annual ATEX-specific internal and external audits.
In addition to the ATEX Directive all our pressure switches now are certified according IECEx. The IECEx scheme was developed in order to simplify internatio-nal trade with electrical equipment for explosion-protection zones. Especially for the export of goods into those countries - of which there are now 30 (including China, Korea, Australia, Malaysia and Japan) - participating in the IECEx scheme, the certificate is mandatory. This certificate significantly simplifies export into these countries.
For explosion-relevant areas, FEMA has a number of pressure switches and thermostats featuring ignition protec-tion by means of flameproof enclosure. For the Ex-i area, various different pressure switch product lines equipped with gold contact and Ex-i are available under the heading “Simple Electrical Apparatus.”

WE PROVIDE TAILOR-MADE PRODUCT SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR APPLICATION
In process plants, besides ensuringprocess safety by means of processinstrumentation, it is also necessary toenact measures to provide for the safetyof the plant, itself. Above all else, designmeasures should guarantee basic safety.Additionally, alarm plans, protectiveshelters, and fire extinguishing systems are required to ensure the safety of per-sonnel. Another important measure is reducing dwelling time in dangerous areas. Once all of these measures have been implemented, the entire installation is subjected to a risk assessment using a risk graph as per IEC 61511. The result of this assessement determines the necessary SIL value for remaining actions ensuring 100% functional safety. This protective technology must employ SIL-conform equipment.
That is the usual procedure in the fieldof chemical engineering. Due to cal-culable risks, this principle of minimiza-tion is now acquiring greater currency in other areas of technology, as well, including in the area of machine construction as per IEC 62061 andcombustion plants according to IEC50156. The following FEMA pressuretransmitters and pressure monitors canbe used for safety instrumentationaccording to IEC 61508.
