VMware has the largest cloud eco system in the world with over 4000 vCloud Air partners in over 100 countries.

For Amazon Web Services (AWS) most of the availability and security is only taken care of as far as it affects their overall service. For example, they guarantee that you can access one of their regional datacenters 99.95% of the time. They do not guarantee your app will be running – just that you can login to the datacenter. If a host that was running one of your VMs goes down it’s up to you to recognize that and take action.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) does offer some security capabilities. For instance, there is a firewall-like perimeter around your virtual private cloud (VPC) and some basic network controls you can apply within the VPC and they’re happy to show you all kinds of logos for various security certifications. But those certifications apply only to the underlying infrastructure and they don’t give out details about the specific controls they apply nor do they allow customers to audit their security. And the very nature of being “public” opens up its own set of concerns in customers’ minds.

Microsoft is trying to tell a similar story about its hybrid cloud to the customers. But the reality is that their hybrid cloud is not as “hybrid” as they claim. They still struggle with limited operating system support (9 guest operating systems and no 32-bit support), with complex questions to be answered about converting virtual machine types to be compatible with Microsoft Azure. Also, what is most concerning is that Microsoft Azure lacks native High Availability, which is natively available on vCloud Air, forcing customer to write their own HA and security rules in Microsoft Azure.

Migrations to Microsoft Azure require significant planning to ensure HA for the migrated applications. Microsoft Azure does not have Hyper-V’s live migration capabilities and their only solution for HA is to configure multiple VMs in an availability set. This also means that the customers have to deploy at least 20% more VMs for HA if they wish to maintain the application performance during a maintenance event. In fact, Microsoft Azure provides no SLA guarantee for single instance applications. Microsofts Azure’s documentation publicly says that the single instance VMs “will be rebooted” without any notice whenever there is a planned maintenance event. The only way to reliably run these apps on Microsoft Azure is to re-design them to work in availability sets. Ask your customers if they are considering single instance applications for hybrid deployment. With vMotion support and hybrid compatibility its easy to bring them on vCloud Air without incurring additional porting cost and effort.
