OCTOBER 13, 2017 DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE | DSE ERUDITION’17 Erudition is an annual corporate conclave organised by Team Convention, Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics. This event is staged together by MBA-International Business (IB) and MBA-Human Resource Development (HRD) with one day being organised by MBA(IB) and the other day by MBA (HRD). It encompasses a keynote session followed by three panel discussions. Each session aims to address ongoing trends in corporate realm. It gives students an opportunity to harness a vast pool of practical knowledge to connect the dots between theoretical and corporate world. Keynote Session The event started by lighting the lamp of knowledge to seek blessings from the Goddess Saraswati. The session was declared open thereafter with the kind words of Dr. Kavita Sharma, HOD, DOC, DSE.

Innovative solution in the emerging market: Emerging markets require understanding of the challenge rather than necessary innovation. Innovation is nothing but using one’s capacity to the fullest and changing the approach. With this note, the session began.

The Hon’ble minister, Shri Vijay Goel (Ministry of State for Parliamentary Affairs & Statistics & Program Implementation, Government of India) was invited as the chief guest. He shared his experience as a student in SRCC, DU. He quoted, “Naya vision, Nayi soch” being his mantra. He encouraged the students to work for the country and create one’s own identity. He also threw spotlight on the importance of hard work and dedication.

First on podium was Mr. Ved Prakash (Director - MMTC Ltd), the guest of honour who addressed the need to protect the country and create markets for its products. He also emphasised on the importance of technology advancement, employment creation and various other economic agendas. He expressed his views on India being a unique country with its demographic advantage and large youth population. He also shared few of the qualities which a young graduate should possess, few of them being, hard work, excellence, integrity and development of soft skills.

Next on, Mr. Devesh Sinha, the guest of honor, being a science graduate represented the other side of the realm. He focused on the power of smiling. He proclaimed that he was aware of the problems rather than the solutions and emphasized on the duties of an individual towards the society. He also shared his thoughts on spreading of wealth and joy to those who are deprived of it.

Following him was Mr. Bikas Singh (Asia Pacific Govt. Relations LEAD, WW Legal Team, Lenovo), our distinguished alumnus. He discussed the case of Lenovo and the impact of various government innovative schemes on the company. He addressed sustainability, being street smart and social responsibility as the key solutions. He also asked the students to get out of the CTC thought process to succeed in the long run. He talked about innovation as ‘giving best experience at best prices’.

The last esteemed speaker for the panel was Mr. RV Sridhar (Executive Director and CEO, Essar Steel India Ltd) as the keynote speaker. He presented his solutions with the help of a presentation taking up the case of his own company. He talked about the steel industry in India and issues related to China dumping. He talked about cost disruption, cost reduction and crowdsourcing of ideas as the key solutions. He also explained the Valmiki Theory and how we can compete in the global market.

Panel 1: Sharing economy: A pathway to sustainability The guest list included Dr. Alok Bhardwaj, MD - CreoVate Transformations, Ex SVP - Canon S&SEA HQ Singapore; Mr. Bharat Ravuri, Founder & CEO -  MintZip; Mr. Divyam Gupta, Founder and CEO - Keshiha Services; Mr.

Gautam Krishnan, Director - Strategy, Product Management & Business - Snapdeal and Mr. Sameer Garg, Head - VP and regional Head - AXIS Bank. Mr. Bharat Ravuri acted as a moderator and each speaker shared their viewpoints one by one with mutual consent. The discussion revolved around the privet of good economy, the production driving force, potential of people, innovation and physical and digital transformation. Various opportunities, pillars and challenges of the shared economy were discussed. Flexibility and control over it, alternate source of income and change in demand due to shared economy were few of the topics which were also emphasised on.

Panel2: Protectionism: Coming Full Circle Mr. Sanjay Beswal, Director -  Andees Consulting; Mr. SP Sharma, Chief Economist & Director of Research - Ph.D. Chamber of Commerce &  Industry; Mr. Dilip Thakkar, Head - International Business - Cera Sanitary ware Limited; Mr. Dinesh Jain, Founder & CEO -  Indian Maze Advisory and Mr. Amit Sharma, Head-IB, Sanat Products - Dabur; were the esteemed speakers of the panel, Mr. Sanjay Beswal being the moderator. Need of liberal economy, angles of protectionism, advancement of product quality, power of storytelling and the prime reasons for sustainability were few of the topics in limelight. Few of the statements quoted by various speakers were:

• “We should not be protective about our economy, rather be more liberal.” – Mr. SP Sharma

• “Build the brand not by advertising but by taking care of its products, suppliers, customers and its people, that it doesn’t do any injustice.” – Mr. Dilip Thakkar

• “We figure out a way for the things we want to do.” – Mr. Dilip Thakkar• “Iron hand in a velvet glove is protectionism.” – Mr. Dinesh Jain• “Where there is a difficulty, there is an opportunity.” – Mr. Sanjay Beswal

Panel 3: Disruptive Models: Transforming the consulting landscape We had on board Mr. Vicky Behl, Associate Director - KPMG; Mr. Manoj Madhusuduan, MD - InsightBee by Evalueserve; Mr. DP Singh, FoundeR - Scale Decisions; Mr. Arindam Mukhopadhyay, Director and India Leader - Gartner Consulting  and Mr. Sandip Khetan, National Director - Financial Advisory Services - EY. They collaborated their views on shift of value chain, automation, modernization of services, digital disruption and different approaches to a business. The past, present and future of consulting firms were also touched upon by our esteemed speakers. With the cases like Reliance Jio, Netflix, etc, the topic was clearly explained to the students.

The instructive and interactive session were packed by inquisitive questions by the students and insightful answers by the speakers.Each session ended with the signing of the feedback board. The event was a great success. The students had a great learning opportunity from the apprehensive views shared by such esteemed speakers.
