TAI-CHI QUAN

Botswana just like other countries has to be

very competitive in all aspects of human

developments, such as social, economic and

spiritual. Wushu system which is commonly

known as Kung-Fu is one element that can

enhance the proper human development. In

this document I will be addressing part of

Wushu which has not been looked at with

much attention in Botswana, (Tai-chi Quan).

In short Tai-chi is a branch of Wushu which

deals with totality in understanding our bod-

ily functions.

What is Tai Chi Chuan?

Tai-Chi Chuan is an internal martial art. Tai

Chen Tai Chi Chuan. Training is from Mon-

day to Friday; from 6pm to 7pm.

Chi Chuan, aims at the attainment of grace

and balance, promotion of physical and emo-

tional health and the development of internal

force or energy which is well known but little

understood. Early masters employed Tai Chi

Chuan for spiritual cultivation and growth.

NB: To derive Tai Chi Chuan’s benefits one

has to practise it correctly and consistently;

reading alone cannot make one a competent

Tai Chi Chuan practitioner.

Where in Botswana can I learn Tai Chi

Chuan?

Tai Chi Chuan is currently offered by an au-

thentic Shifu Kabo Kolobe in Gaborone. His

Club is located in Mogoditshane near Pula

Spar. The Style offered are Yang Tai Chi and

The year 2014 was full of serious fort-

nightly overnight and all day training

seminars. The brainchild and offering

from Oikado “Dawgz-of-War”

Technical Board. The technical

board have been mandated to stan-

dardize Oikado technical aspects in

kihon, kata and kumite. Set instruc-

tional standards and adherence to by

sensei and dojo instructors.

Standardization and the roll-out pro-

gram ongoing. It is mandatory that all

dojo instructors and sensei attend

technical board seminars. The Over-

night Training usually runs from Fri-

day 9pm to the following day Satur-

day at 6am. The timing was to ad-

dress cutting costs on attendants in

regard to expenses on hotel and

meals. Secondly that it allowed eve-

rybody time to attend to family week-

end errands. The training also al-

lowed career martial artists to catch

up with their training. The Saturday All Day

Training normally runs from 9am-5pm. Its tar-

get audience is all but primarily target benefi-

ciaries of the Grassroots Development Pro-

gram being children and young teens. It ad-

dresses among others engaging our children

and youth; keeping them safe from drug abuse

and alcohol abuse as are other abuses. Most

importantly educating and equipping atten-

dants with self-defense and life skills, towards

a behavior change modification. All Oikado

Black belts must regularly attend the Fort-

nightly Overnight and All Day Training. It

adds up to their ongoing continuous assess-

ment for Dan Test and Grading Requirements.

It offers our black belts opportunity to teach

and learn from each other. To be assessed on

merit. The Overnight Training is an experi-

ence and forms Oikado Flagship Instructor

Program. It offers one opportunity to awaken

other senses hitherto unknown to the practitio-

ner and connect to and with the universe.

Be on the look out for dates and venues of

these overnight Gashuku. We look forward to

spend a night of training with you.

Grassroots Development Program 175-125 words Martial arts schools world wide survive

through having development structures. In

Botswana various sporting codes run a BNSC

program called “Re ba Bona Ha”, a youth

development program of the affiliates of

BNSC. The Botswana Karate Association

(BOKA) in their drive to meet up with youth

development milestones have a “Project

1000” in which their target is to establish dojo

in at least 1000 public schools by 2016.

In Oikado we call it The Grassroots Develop-

ment Program. It dates back to 1990-2000

when we ran the Schools Karate Champion-

ships and the Nation-wide Coaching and

Training Clinics. These grassroots activities

are alive. It is hoped that the youth champi-

onships will be re-introduced in 2015

resources permitting.

Regions and dojo are required to attract

membership in particular in the age

brackets of 5-12, 13-16, 17-23 and the

seniors. Through the Adopt-A-School

Campaign, Oikado Sensei have been

challenged to adopt a school, open a

karate club with and offer regular techni-

cal support and instruction.

Regions and sensei must report regularly

to Hanshi and Kyoshi.

Page 4: Solomzi 2015 March

Remember we were to depart for Durban

that Sunday. The meeting went through that

Tuesday.

I presented Oikado Martial Arts School to

the potential sponsor. In particular the

Grassroots Development Program and im-

pending internship. Indeed they had a lis-

tening ear. During the discussion they

pointed out they are willing to work with us

and for now they can only do so little to help

towards our IKO internship.

They made it clear that they are interested

in Youth Development structures. At the end

we agreed to submit a full proposal for

sponsorship on return from Durban.

Indeed I did email the sponsorship proposal

brief as agreed and the full proposal 31

March 2014. On that Tuesday were offered

sponsor branded Golf T-shirts, 2014 Diary, a

pen and 4GB USB, umbrella, short notes file.

They also part sponsored my internship. In

this report I can confidently reveal that we

are working with Bayport Financial Services

on a possible full sponsorship for Oikado

Martial Arts School sanctioned youth devel-

opment programs, inclusive of tournaments.

RE: REQUEST FOR TRAINING ATTACH-

MENT FOR OUR OIKADO STUDENTS

This is a follow up to our earlier mobile mes-

sages. We write on instruction from your

dear colleague, Grandmaster Dr. Patrick

Solomzi Makgabenyana, Oikiru-Ryu Karate-

Jitsu Do International Botswana.

It is a requirement for all OIKADO at brown

and black belts to undergo a series of train-

ing attachments with various organizations

regionally and internationally. These attach-

ments are intended to offer a combination of:

1.Exposure to training methodologies and

strategies

2.Opportunity to compare

3.Opportunity to train outside the ambit of

OIKADO

4.An option to train and be graded where

possible

5.Rank recognition

6.Membership registration

7.Attend courses in refereeing and judging

8.Friendship and brotherhood in budo

Most importantly as students and disciples of

Grandmaster Dr. Makgabenyana we wish to

maintain a live wire with and to his various

affiliations and member organizations. We

trust that by rekindling these training attach-

ments we will be opening a window for our

Youthful Black belts to explore martial arts

across a variety of styles, systems and

schools.

Our students are required to be attached for

at least a week (7 days), exclusive of week-

ends and travelling to and from Botswana to

South Africa. How long they will be will be

I had a final meeting with Hanshi Dr. Patrick

Makgabenyana on 5th March 2014 to take

further instructions and also to collect letters

of introduction. Our assignment whilst in

Durban for the internship was:

1.To benchmark on IKO administrative setup

2.Projects run and supported by IKO

3.Establish extensive networking and con-

tacts with other schools and dojo in Wushu

Kung Fu, Fujiyama, Judo and Kempo.

4.To initiate their Botswana visit.

DAY 1: Monday 10 March 2014

This was our arrival day in Durban at 6am.

We had travelled Inter Cape mainliner from

Gaborone, connecting in Johannesburg at

10pm on Sunday. We took a taxi to Durban

North to the residence of IKO SA Branch

Chief Shihan Khanyisani Mazibuko. From

Shihan’s residence to the IKO SA Secretariat

office and Honbou dojo at 11am. The new

office was under construction. We helped

sought things out; old paper work, old cer-

tificates, photos, banners. We help assemble

cabinets and offload new furniture.

The first session was primarily on kihon/

basics in stance, punch, block, kick and

exercise. We noticed new changes to kihon

brought in by Matsushima. We also had the

opportunity to witness one of the athletes for

the all Africa Tournament being drilled for

one hour on several kicking and punching

combination sets. The session was from

530pm to 7pm. It helped kill fatigue from 2-

day travelling by bus.

Osu! Osu! Osu!

determined by their leave days from work as

most are career men and women.

I must be quick to point out that our Techni-

cal Board, under the chairmanship of Sensei

Gaabadzo Moseki, when they come in addi-

tion to above they will also be there to bench

mark the operations of the technical board

and that of tournament officiating. The Tech-

nical Board will have to come as you have

advised towards March so that they can at-

tend as observers and possible as fighters at

The All Africa Tournament, March 21-22,

2014 and the World Cup in September 6, 7

2014.

Kindly assist them. Our employers can be

strict to authorize applications for leave.

To that end we request:

1.An Open Letter of Admission for training

attachment with your academy in Durban to

Oikado students from Botswana.

2.Letter of Invitation to attend The All Af-

rica Tournament, March 21, 22 2014 in Port

Shepstone. In your reply to quotation re-

quested kindly attach the letters of admission

acknowledging same. Post hard copies to

The President

Oikado Martial Arts School

PO Box 45138 Riverwalk. Gaborone.

Botswana.

Email: [email protected]

I look forward to coming to Durban. The first

was in 1998.

On behalf of Hanshi Dr. P. Makgabenyana,

and the general membership of Oikado Bot-

swana we convey our heartfelt greetings and

blessings to your esteemed self, family, the

academy and the world organization.

2014 IKO Matsushima Internship Program

Page 4 SOLOMZI

Introduction

The relationship between Oikado Martial

Arts School Botswana and IKO Kyoku-

shinkaikan Karate Do dates back to 1968.

Kyokushin is the original style of Hanshi Dr.

Patrick Solomzi Makgabenyana. This is the

style he could have introduced to Botswana

then. Due to its hard training regimen it

proofed tough and demanding to Botswana.

He opted for friendlier systems until he ulti-

mately introduced Oikiru Ryu Karate-Jitsu

Do (OIKADO) in 1986. Requirements for

black belts grading is rigorous and de-

manding as there are in other systems and

organizations. Among others, Oikado brown

and black belts are required to go for train-

ing attachments and where possible acquire

grading during attachment. It is from this

background that we present to you the 2014

Oikado Martial Arts School/ IKO Matsushima

Kyokushinkaikan Karate Do Internship Pro-

gram Report.

The will to resume and rekindle the IKO

internship started in earnest in 2007 as part

requirement for advancement in rank of our

black belts cadre. We commenced negotia-

tion with IKO South Africa office in Durban

January 2014. The late Shihan Mbuzeni Al-

pheus Sabela (RIP) advised that it is better

and good to come in March and to cover the

period of the inaugural IKO All Africa Tourna-

ment. It was agreed and we chose the March

10-24 2014.

Sponsorship Challenges

It was not right that we will be going for

such an important international training

attachment and attend the All Africa

Tournament without a sponsor. We

started knocking on doors of possible

sponsors albeit the fact that we knew tim-

ing was not in our favour. Below is the

letter that we wrote requesting for finan-

cial assistance. Each team member had to organize their own

sponsorship. At the time three had confirmed

that they will go for internship. Sensei T.M.

Ogotseng was in Serowe, Sensei B.E. Oitsile

in Francistown and I in Tlokweng. Remember

we had already confirmed the internship

dates, March 10-24, 2014.I had more chal-

lenges not drawing a monthly salary.

My prayers were answered after a protracted

sms discussions and missing out on appoint-

ments with a sponsor willing to enter into

negotiations. We finally agreed to meet at

their offices at 0900hrs, Tuesday March 4,

2014.
