Question 1: Growth to P&E Forum

Question 1: How should we evolve the current JPC/IECEC collocated event to the “Propulsion & Energy Forum” envisioned in the New Event Model? How do we improve the content, increase the value, and grow attendance? Example questions to consider:

• How do we best implement the NEM vision; are there radical changes to JPC/IECEC we should consider?

• How do we retain/enhance multiple-society involvement (the “Joint” in JPC)?• What other Conferences/Events should we try to align with the P&E Forum?• How do we achieve better ties between the Aeronautics and Space sides of

our discipline?• How do we improve Keynote & Plenary Sessions?• How do we enhance the presence of “energy” including Green initiatives? • How do we increase corporate sponsorship?

From P&E NEM Workshop, July 29. 2012

Page 11: Solid Rockets Technical Committee (SRTC) 2013 ASM Report January 7, 2013 51 st AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Grapevine, TX Robert E. Black, III SRTC

Question 2: We are committed to developing a premier P&E Forum, but also must support the overall Institute direction on NEM. Other Forums, in particular Aviation and Space, can not be successful without a P&E presence. How do we achieve all these objectives? Example questions to consider:• Are there “out of the box” options we should consider, such as moving the

JPC/IECEC event to January to align with the S&T Forum?• Is there a way to rotate or assign support between TC’s such that such that each

TC isn’t attempting to support more than two Forums a year?• What is the minimum presence that that would make the Aviation and/or Space

Forums attractive to you and your colleagues• Are there innovative ways to participate that we haven’t considered?

Question 2: Support Of Other Forums

Consolidated Suggestions/Remarks/Actions Suggested Disposition

1 All

Develop strategic plan for the P&E Forum starting with benchmarking of other conferences offering a similar product, including IGTI TurboExpo, JANNAF, IEE Energy Tek, SAE Power Systems, etc. Look at structure, value, target audience demographics, "virtual" provisions, etc. Find niches not owned by others; add relevant but diverse topics to P&E Forum (e.g. gas turbines for power generation & environmental control/power systems); better integrate with sponsors and exhibits

Must do

3 2, 3Better publicize the Forum; compete for international participation; open dialog with IEEE, INCOSE, JANNAF to capture energy conference attendees

Should do

2 2Incorporate growing/emerging areas of interest (UAVs, Green, Renewable energy, smart grids, bio fuels, etc.)

Create recurring session structure that features "hot" topics

4 1, 4Bring in ITAR topics but be careful not to adversely international attendance

In work. JPC 2013 will pilot ITAR sessions

5 2, 3, 5Interrelate topics between JPC and IECEC; capitalize on synergy between P & E elements to create new sessions/tracts; consider new ways of combining disciplines not previously thought of

Logical step; recognized for all Forums (but P &E synergy may provide even more opportunity). "Just do it"

6 1, 2, 4Improve paper and presentation quality; better panel discussions to bring in management audience; create "management sessions"

Quality is pervasive issue across all Forums; better panel discussions key goal of NEM (e.g. "integration" level)

7 5 Have a theme for each year. This is done now, but perhaps the Theme be more "strategic" and better driven through each level/event of the conference

8 1Improve conference layout/logistics; avoid plenary/panel/paper session conflicts

Pervasive issue across all Forums; most appropriate for TAC-level action

9 5Address video streaming/recording of conferences to improve participation

In work. Topic of "virtual" involvements in TAC activities subject of 2013 TAC workshop, January 6 at ASM

10 4 Get generation "Y" to attendPervasive issue across all Forums; most appropriate for Institute-wide action

Topic 1: Grow/Improve P&E ForumP&E NEM workshop product summary – Topic 1 (as of 9/26/12)

WAG at Priority

Source Groups

Consolidated Suggestions/Remarks/Actions Suggested Disposition

1 3

While all conferences are "technical", assume that Aviation and Space will have greater top level/management/systems content, and S&T and P&E Forums will have a greater fundamental/technical/technology focus

Probably best way to envision differences in Forum content and how to deconflict resultant TC response

2 1, 5

Consider TC-level restructuring to support other Forums (different volunteers work different conferences); consider dedicated TC subcommittee to support Aviation and /or Space; these subcommittees might span 2 or more TCs

Most practical go-forward approach; dedicated subcommittee within each appropriate TC

3 3Just Do It - each TC to organize a session at Aviation or Space, with emphasis on higher-level system/application focus

Fits with above two items

4 2, 3Reprise P&E Forum content in a "Best Off" format; cherry pick papers (to re-present as special invited papers)?

Innovative but problematic; need dialog at TAC level; Aviation precedes P&E so go 2 months early or 10 months late?

5 4Virtual sessions (presenter not physically present?) - may tie in with "best of" concept

Innovative but problematic; need dialog at TAC level

6 5 Provide "support" through short courses (rather than paper sessions?)May not have audience for short course if related technical sessions aren't held

7 1 Restructure at TAC/Group level to better support NEM portfolioPossible reorganization of TAC is on the table but will not be addressed for at least 2 years (Per TAC VP)

8 1, 3, 4

Restructure 5-Forum NEM assumption - Combine Space, Aviation and JPC; reconsider timing of Forums (to reduce schedule proximity to P&E Forum); support Aviation and Space Forums only on alternate years. Note that planned Forums may conflict with international air shows (Paris, Farnborough) and academic semesters

Low probability of making major changes in 5-Forum construct at this time; timing to avoid conflicts always a challenge

Topic 2: Support other Forums

P&E Meeting Key Notes: Awards

• Gordon C. Oates Air Breathing Propulsion & Martin Summerfield Propellants and Combustion Graduate Awards Are Funded By The AIAA Foundation (AIAAF)

• Both Awards Are Currently Suspended - Negative Balance

• TAC/Sponsoring TC’s Were Never Informed Of Developing Issues; TC’s Only Found Out Upon Inquiry In May, 2012

• Foundation Accounting Is Incomplete & Incorrect (Next Chart); Authoritative History Lost; Original Oates’ “Endowment” Unknown

• AIAAF Implementing Corrective Actions For All Awards

• AIAAF/TAC Working To Find Specific Path Forward For Oates & Summerfield; Agenda Item At ASM TAC Meeting

• Path Forward Will Almost Certainly Require TC Involvement To Raise TBD Portion Of Funds Necessary To “Re-Endow” The Awards… Without TC Action, Awards Unlikely To Be Reinstated
