Message from our President April 2012 started out with a bang when my company decided I should retire….so I did. After sifting though Social Security, Medicare, Medi-Gaps, Advantage plans and so on, I am finally officially enrolled in all my “entitlements” as the Government calls them. I thought this event would mind-blowing but so far, it hasn’t been bad….not that I am not still looking for consulting or contract work to fill in the time available. My wife even found me a “Geezer” group that gets together for breakfast twice a week in Leipers Fork if anyone else is interested in joining me. There was a lot going on in April with Cars & Coffee now every Saturday, the Master’s to watch (no tickets again), Nissan’s Zattack, Kars4Kids car show, and Dan’s Magical Mystery Tour which was a great event. Cold weather again put a damper on Kars4Kids, but we had outstanding weather for checking out the vintage Z cars and for the great tour around Center Hill and Cordell Hull lakes that Dan Martin organized and led. May looks equally exciting with the start of the Triple Crown races and KY Derby and Preakness races coming up, plus May 12 the Bowling Green sports car boys along with Richard Hughes and Jon Wright are cooking up a show n shine and brats on the Barbie. Contact Richard, Jon or me for more information. Be aware I-24 by LP Field is closed every week-end in May except for the last week-end.
On May 19, our friends from Heart-of-Dixie Region in Huntsville will be joining us for Cars & Coffee and then doing lunch at Golden Corral if you want to join us and them for the get-together. We had a couple tours planned, but not sure if those will take place with Mother’s Day and Memorial Day week-ends coming up. If you know of a good drive and spot for lunch and would like to lead a tour, let Dan Martin and me know. Also don’t forget to make reservations for Tail of the Dragon on June 23 week-end.. Our low group rates end on May 12th. Hope to see you at our next club meeting on May 8th at Cozymel’s in Cool Springs.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche Dies At 76 The entire Porsche community mourns great designer
Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is mourning Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. The Honorary President of the Supervisory Board died on 5 April 2012 in Salzburg, aged 76. Matthias Müller, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche AG, paid tribute to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s services to the sports car manufacturer: “We mourn the death of our partner, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. As the creator of the Porsche 911, he established a design culture in our company that has shaped our sports cars to this very day. His philosophy of good design is a legacy to us.
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was born in Stuttgart on 11 December 1935, the oldest son of Dorothea and Ferry Porsche. Even his childhood was shaped by cars, and he spent much of his time in the engineering offices and development workshops of his grandfather Ferdinand Porsche. In 1943 the family accompanied the Porsche company’s move to Austria, where he went to school in Zell am See. After returning to Stuttgart in 1950, he attended the private Waldorf school. After leaving school, he enrolled at the prestigious Ulm School of Design.
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche retained a close lifelong association with Porsche AG as a partner and member of the Supervisory Board. For example, even after stepping down from front-line business operations, he contributed to the design of Porsche’s sports cars over many decades and repeatedly steered the company in the right direction. From 1990 to 1993, F.A. Porsche served as President of the company’s Supervisory Board, thus playing a major role in Porsche A.G’s turnaround. In 2005, he stood down from his Supervisory Board role in favour of his son Oliver and assumed the mantle of Honorary President of the Supervisory Board.
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche will be buried in the family grave at Schüttgut in Zell am See, attended by his immediate family. An official funeral service will be held in Stuttgart at a later date.

Tail of the Dragon/Deal’s Gap/Fontana
Village – June 22 – 24, 2012
Mark your calendars and make your hotel reservations. Dan Martin has
planned a trip to Deal’s Gap NC by way of the Cherohala Skyway for a
week-end visit to Tail of the Dragon, and maybe a Saturday trip to
Biltmore or Biltmore Village in Ashville. Mike Moody made this trip
with PCA Huntsville 6 years ago and said it was a blast. This has to be
on someone’s “bucket list” so make your reservations now with more
details to follow. Call Fontana Village at 800-849-2258 and use code
MUSIK STADT for special room rate of $115/night (Friday + Sat night).
Dan is working on special dinners for both nights. More details to
follow, but make your hotel reservations before May 22. Email Dan at
[email protected] to confirm you are going.

I have lived in many places – from Berea, Kentucky, all the way to Brussels, Belgium. Currently I live in Mount Juliet, Tennessee. My father, Terry Sutphen, worked for Dresser Industries, beginning in 1957. Terry had a love for manufacturing and he traveled to different locations to fix and to re-organize plants, groups and divisions. His final role as Division President culminated his forty-one year career, which ended in 1998. With retirement upon him, he began to teach college courses in business, manufacturing, and process engineering. In addition, he started his own consultant company called “Manufacturing Strategies.” Terry was a great influence in my life, and his fondness for automobiles helped shaped my own similar interests. Terry’s love for cars included the Corvair, Mustang, T-bird, Buick Regal GS, Monte Carlo SS, and, his pride and joy – a 1933 Bugatti.
To date, I’ve owned motorcycles (Yamaha and Ducati) and a variety of cars, including a Toyota Celica, 240Z, Monte Carlo SS, and an Audi Quattro Coupe. However, I’ve always wanted a 911 Porsche. With the sudden passing of my brother in 2006 and my father’s death in 2008, I decided then that I would finally make that dream a reality. It took me almost a year until I found my dream – a mint 2008 911 Porsche in white, less than a year old and with only 1800 miles. I purchased the car for several reasons – to fulfill my childhood dream of owning one, to bring a little joy back into my life, and, ultimately, to remember my dad. I can still see my dad driving his Bugatti, complete with his WWI leather helmet and goggles! I only wish he was still around today to drive my new obsession. I have added, in stages, some upgrades over the last three years to include twenty inch black Techart wheels, a 3M clear bra, Techart exhaust system and tips, tinted windows, Sirius Radio, and a Techart Aerokit II.
I joined Porsche Club of America (PCA) after a card was placed on my windshield and I researched the club. I have enjoyed participating on several rallies and rides, Winterfest in Chattanooga, Parade Savannah, and a couple of DEs. It’s been fun and, yes, Dan, I am working on a new girlfriend so that I’m on time more often.

My personal college studies brought me to Boston. Following in Terry’s footsteps, I began what would be a twenty-seven year career, working in manufacturing facilities selling cutting tools. Starting in 1984, I worked Abrasives sales followed by distribution sales, and then as a factory applications engineer with Kyocera. In 1989, I started my career with Iscar Metals. I currently work on large projects for Iscar, focusing in the Aerospace and Automotive industries, to help streamline companies’ manufacturing processes and to help make machining more efficient.
Kars 4 Kids The third Saturday in April can only mean one thing. Kars 4 Kids. The annual
event which helps support the Baptist Children’s Home in Brentwood seems to
be on Mother Nature’s bad side. The weather has seemed uncooperative the last
few years with rain, clouds and cold, but it never dampens the sprits of those who
plan and attend this wonderful event. The British car club, Mustang club,
Corvette club, some great muscle cars, and Porsche’s could be viewed
throughout the day along with their owners who are more than happy to tell you
about their baby. This is a great one day event and all proceeds help support the
children’s home. How could you lose? Make plans to attend next year’s event to
help support this very worthy cause and hopefully Mother Nature will give us a
picture perfect day.

MYSTERY TOUR
April 28th woke up sunny in Nashville as the Musik-Stadt Region set out on a Mystery Drive with only the Event Chairman, Dan Martin, aware of the route or destination. Thirteen Porsches with 24 enthusiastic members gathered behind Cracker Barrel in Lebanon and then headed east on Hwy 141. The drive passed some beautiful farmland along the twists and turns of the route as well as running beside the Caney Fork River, a popular trout stream, before stopping for a brief rest and photo op atop the dam at Center Hill Lake. It was then time to shift gears and head north on Hwy 96 to Cordell Hull Lake, and lunch at Seasons Restaurant where everyone enjoyed an outdoor waterfront lunch with plenty of time to relax and chat. Following lunch, Dan led us on a spirited drive as the turns grew tighter, sight lines shortened and the elevation changes became more steep. Over 120 miles of scenic back roads made for Porsche’s. It was a great spring date with a great route picked out by Dan.
