DesIgn revIew CommItteeHappy New Year to everyone! And a new year is bringing new additional paint colors for stucco, shutters, doors, and garage doors. As you may recall the result of the survey concluded that nearly 75% of residents wanted more choices for exterior paint colors.

We will be presenting the new color palettes at the January 17th open Board meeting. The color boards will then be available to view at the administrative office in the club house and we encourage you to check them out. We have done extensive work with the National Account Executive for Property Management Services of Behr Paint. All new stucco color selections are complimentary with the new shutter, doors, trim and fascia colors and suitable for our type of community.

We are happy to give the residents more options when considering painting their exteriors. None of the existing colors will be

The 2017 Holiday season is now a memory, however, because of the generosity of Solera Members to the “Make-A-Wish” program many children in our area enjoyed a very Merry Christmas. In addition to enjoying the Holiday season with family and friends, Members were able to enjoy a beautifully decorated Oakmont Clubhouse and participate in the annual lighting of the Christmas tree and Menorah during the Holiday season. A big “Thank You” to the Staff and Members who made this all possible.

Now as we welcome 2018 we all hope that it will be a prosperous, healthy, and safe year. We are fortunate to live in a community like Solera where members become more like family and are there for support in times of need. You hear the term “harmonious living” associated with living in an Association and it is you, the Members who make it a reality.

In 2018 the Board will be active in ensuring that we are serving the needs of the community. We take our fiduciary duty to the

community very seriously and always apply sound business judgement practices that involve research and seeking expert advice when making any decision that affects the residents of Solera before acting. Our decisions are always made based on what the Board believes is in the best interest of the Association and its Members.

In 2018 there will be two Board positions up for election. You will have an opportunity to select the two Board members that you feel will best serve the community in accordance with the Association’s Governing Documents. This is a very powerful tool that Members have, and you are urged to either run for one of the positions or at least cast your vote for the candidate that you feel is best qualified for the position.

There will be some major activities happening in 2018, such as updates to our Community Rules and Design Guidelines, and repair and slurrying of our private streets. As always, you will be kept informed using our community media as these activities progress.

eliminated. They will all continue to be available. We have also added some of the new colors for the shutters and doors for those keeping the existing stucco color.

If you decide to paint using the new colors, the application sheet will be for the stucco color you choose and it will list all the options for everything else that you may want to paint. Each stucco color has its own group of colors that compliments it and includes a few of the existing colors.

We would like to compliment all those who put up lovely holiday decorations and congratulations to the winners of the decorating contest.

Please remember that all decorations must be taken down by January 10. Code enforcement will be coming around after that day.

REMINDER: Design guidelines can be found on the Solera website under Publications>Governing Documents>Design Guidelines.

who are You?By: Bill Cramsie

Most all of us have a first, middle (sometimes more than one), and a last name. It is our last name that in many cases has been a great source of confusion and may not be your original family name at all. That is to say that your current last name may not be what it

started out to be or how it was to be spelled. Somewhere over the centuries many names got added, their spelling was changed, or just plain old got changed! How is this you say? Well in the old days long before you or I were born many people had only one name. Then people started to add where they were from or what their occupation was to that one name, e.g. Bill of Antrim, became Bill Antrim or Bill the Shoemaker became Bill Shoemaker. Then people got fancy and added middle names. One must realize that in those days most people couldn’t read or write, so whoever was recording the name spelled it how they heard it. Bill Antrim became Bill Atrim and so on. This problem was compounded by Census takers, Tax men, and government

officials at immigration places like Ellis Island who changed (Americanized) names, when the names were too difficult to spell or pronounce. So something like Slizywtz became Silver or Swit or something much simpler. My GGrandfather was born with the name Cramsie. When he got to Philadelphia in 1849, he was listed as Crampsie. Then in his first U. S. Census listing, it was spelled Cramsey. He never changed it and died as Cramsie, but it got recorded differently in various places along the way. So If you think you name is what you use now, who knows. It may only be the latest iteration! If you want to explore your name and what past ancestors might have used, members of the Ancestry Group can help get you on the trail to finding out “Who Are You?” We meet on the 4th Friday of the month at 1:00 p.m. at the Solera Clubhouse.

bon appetItHello from Bon Appetit Cooking Club!

Our fun-filled group of over 90 enjoyed their annual Holiday Luncheon on December 1st at Billy Reed’s in Palm Springs. Members enjoyed a delicious luncheon,

laughter, caroling and friendship. Thank you to Judy Wheat, who won the beautiful quilt, so graciously donated by Penny Wykoff, back to the club for future fundraising!

We have enjoyed many great monthly events in 2017, and look forward to our current, and new, members joining us in 2018. We meet the 1st Friday of each month, and you do not have to cook to be a part of Bon Appetit. A reminder there will be no meeting in January as the clubhouse will be closed for annual maintenance. So, think about coming to the first event of the new year on Friday, February 2nd at 1pm. Watch for our flyer announcing the details!

A reminder that annual dues of $25 are collected at the February meeting. If you want to avoid the line and pay in advance, please come to the clubhouse on either of these dates:

Tuesday, January 16th between 10am-Noon Thursday, January 18th between 2pm-4pm

Bon Appetit wishes everyone a joyous holiday season and a very Happy New Year!

KaraoKeSING IN THE NEW YEAR! Come, enjoy a night of fun with friends and neighbors. Singing not required. We all have great fun enjoying, listening and dancing to the wonderful Solera talent. mahJongMahjong is an ancient Chinese game. The game consists traditionally of144 domino-like tiles bearing figure that represent the elements. The object of the game is to collect 14 tiles in particular match sets. In this game,

players must put together a complete Mahjong that consists of combinations of three of a kind, tiles in a sequence of three numbers and a pair. When a player completes the Mahjong, a call of Mahjong must be called to claim the win. In addition to being a fun way to pass the time and socialize, it is also a good exercise for keeping mind sharp and improving cognitive functions. Our Solera Mahjong group meets on every Tuesday at the clubhouse from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Anyone interested in playing this game please contact Mr. Louis Hickman at (951) 769-3534 or Dr. Frank Tsai at (951) 378-4800.

QuILtersOur group meets each Monday at 12:00 in the Arts and Crafts Room.

December has passed and Santa came to all the quilters. Now we are looking forward to the New Year. We will be sewing pillow cases for children in the hospital. Using all the

donated material really gave us added incentive to make these pillow cases.

The Road To California is always a “Must Do” for quilters. This is held the third weekend in January at the Ontario Convention Center. The artists who display their quilts are amazing. So many talents – wonderful to behold. Many vendors tempt our quilters with new equipment and techniques.

If you are new to Solera and would like to join us – you are certainly welcome to “check us out” each Monday in the Arts and Crafts room. As you know the Clubhouse is closed the first two weeks in January, so come see us the third Monday.

about a variety of topics. This NET helps radio operators to hone their radio communication skills, important skills that are critical if emergency communication is necessary. We encourage any amateur radio operators in the community to join in on this NET.

On the 3rd Friday of each month, we encourage “field reporters” and anyone else who would like to be a part of our Emergency Communication Program to join us at our 8am meeting in the Arts & Crafts Room. At this meeting, we discuss the Emergency Communication Program, communication protocols, etc. so that all know how to effectively communicate via radio in the case of a major emergency. At 9:30, following this meeting, we conduct an FRS Radio drill to practice what is learned in the meeting. If you have an FRS Radio (Motorola MR350R or similar radio or “walkie-talkie” with a privacy code), tune to channel 7, privacy code 27 and be a part of this important drill. If you don’t have an FRS Radio, you are nevertheless welcome to attend our important 8am Emergency Communication meeting on the 3rd Friday of the month. You can also go to our website at www.soleraradio.com for more information on the Emergency Communication Program.

It was suggested that owners check the roof of their motorhome or trailer to insure it is secure, especially near the front. An open seam can allow moisture to seep inside the unit, or worse, a mass of air while moving, which could peel back the entire roof. Are you curious about future trips? The RV Club meets the first Thursday of even months at 1:00 PM. The next meeting is February 1st. If you own an RV and would like to join us, please call Debbie Cochran at (909) 286-5539.

soLera goLF CLubDecember is known as the month of celebrating, sharing, and giving. The Solera Golf Club participated in all these activities during the month. On December 16th, we held our Christmas party at the clubhouse. Our members and guests celebrated the season together with a delicious dinner of Baked Ziti and meatballs prepared by Tony and Fran Germana as well as salad and bread furnished by the club. Cake and ice cream were donated by golf

member Ed Young to show his appreciation for, in his words, “all that the club has done for me”. To keep with the spirit of giving, each attendee was requested to bring a toy for “Carol’s Kitchen Kids” to be distributed locally. About 100 toys were collected and donated. Christmas, dinner, and dance music was provided by Jorge Vawter.

On December 4th, our Club Champion, Jess Arriola competed in the SCGA Tournament of Club Champions-Net Division at the Classic Club, Palm Desert. When Jess returned to Beaumont, he reported that he had not done as well as he had hoped. However, he really enjoyed the experience and the players that he met. He vowed to work harder with the hope that he could go back again next year. Jess expressed his thanks to the club for sending him to the tournament. Thank you Jess for representing us!

The New Year finds us back on our regular schedule of Tuesday games. We encourage all our golfers to make a New Year’s Resolution to make the effort to join us on Tuesdays. Check in before 7:15 AM to participate in the day’s game.

New members are always welcome. To join, call President Jack Sturm at 951-846-1773 of Vice President Earl Morton at 951-769-0623. They are always available to answer any questions you may have.

Feature Articlessupport our troops

By: Jesse DonardtWhen writing the January article, it must be submitted by December tenth. I may not have all the December information and end of year facts, but I will share some with you. Your donations have been generous, and I can't thank you enough. During November and December, we are close to double the number of packages we normally send. Those donations really helped. We mailed out lots of boxes of Christmas lights, decorations and packets of blank Christmas cards, that the troops had them in time to mail them to family and friends. For any of you who receive those sample Christmas or greeting cards in the mail, rather than letting them pile up in a drawer, we can use them.

When it comes to writing Christmas cards, for the first time we also solicited help from our neighbors outside of Solera. To all those, in Solera, who wrote cards, thank you so much. I have also thanked those from outside the community, including a Girl Scout troop and my daughter's school for special needs children. This year, we broke all records in sending written Christmas cards. Just before submitting this article, I mailed the last packets of cards. I can attest to the fact that Christmas can be a lonely time for a Soldier away from home, family and friends. Your cards can be a bright spot for that service man or woman. 1,113 cards written this season is our highest ever sent. Add to that, the twenty eight personal cards I wrote to my contacts, and the grand total is 1,141. To all of you, in Solera, who support our service men and women, you are special people, thank you for caring.

reaL estate newsBy: Diana Mangan

2017 has been another memorable year of appreciating home values in Solera!

It’s interesting to look back and examine what has happened in terms of home appreciation. I reviewed the closed sales of each of the three Solera models during the past six months and then compared them to the same six month period last year. Here's what I found:

Princesses: The Princess is the smallest of the three Solera models at 1,392 square feet. 17 Princesses have sold in the past six months. The median was $247,500 and the average was $248,088. When I compared this to last year to find the appreciation rate, the median Princess sale price was $220,000 in November of 2016 and is now at $247,500. The median sales price of a Princess has risen 12.5% in the past year. Pretty good investment if you own a Princess!

trillions: The Trillion is the middle sized of the three Solera models,

coming in at 1,687 square feet. Going back six months from early June until now, there have been 18 closed sales, excluding one bank-owned home. The median was $274,000 and the average was $275,319. When I compared this to last year to find the appreciation rate, the median sale price was $256,950 in November of 2016 and is now $274,000. The median sales price of a Trillion has risen 6.6% in the past year.

emeralds: Excluding the two bank-owned homes, there were 13 Emerald sales during the last six months. The median was $335,000 and the average was $334,022. When I compared this to last year to find the appreciation rate, the median sale price was $315,000 in November of 2016 and is now at $335,000. The median sales price of an Emerald has risen 6.3% in the past year.

garY stohBy: Sharon Waitman

Gary Stoh is a soft-spoken gentleman. He is also a dynamic, energetic leader in our community and an artist. You may not know him personally, but you’ve heard his name mentioned over the years.

Gary has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked 37 years for McDonnell/Douglas (now Boeing) in Program Management. The last 12 years of his career he and his wife, Susan, lived in England where he was the McDonnell/Douglas Project Manager overseeing the British manufactured components for the T-45 Navy Trainer, a plane designed to train US Navy pilots.

Gary’s passion is woodworking. We are not talking platters or bowls, oh no! He designs and makes the most beautiful furniture, and if you’ve ever been lucky enough to be in his home you would see the magnificent pieces he makes. He told me it all started when, as a Model Railroad enthusiast, he built a small business manufacturing Model Railroad kits.

Upon returning to the States and their home in Anaheim Hills in 2002, they decided the house was too big, and the congestion in Orange County was something they didn’t want to contend with in their retirement. One day while visiting Gary’s mother in Cherry Valley they stopped by Sun Lakes. At that time, the Solera models were on display there. They loved the house and the peaceful area, and as they say “one look was all it took.” They moved into Solera in 2004 and have been active in our community ever since.

Gary was one of two residents that were elected to serve on the first Solera Board. In fact, he, along with Bob Nelson, put the first “Rules and Regulations” and “Design Guidelines” together for this community by researching Sun Lakes documents and drafting them to fit Solera.

In 2004, he became the first President of the Board of Directors and served on the Board for the next five years, three of them as President. He chaired the Cable Ad-hoc Committee and the Capital Improvement Committee. He was elected to the Board, again, in 2014 and currently serves as President. He has been the liaison to the Recreation Activities Advisory Committee and the Communications Advisory Committee. He is on the Sippers Steering Committee and past Vice President and President. And if that isn’t enough, he was also one of the four founding members of the Solera Golf Club.

The thing Gary loves about the Solera life-style is the opportunity for retired people to be as active and involved as they want to be, with a wide variety of recreational and governmental activities, whatever your particular interests are.

He has loved watching Solera grow from vacant land to a vibrant community of fun and lively friends and neighbors.

bill & miriam’s adventureby: Dennis Rice

At about 11 pm on February 22, 2019, Bill & Miriam were woken from bed when the whole place started shaking. They both jumped up and stumbled into a closet doorway. After about four minutes, the shak-ing stopped. They had heard several “crashes” and Bill was eager to find out what damage had been caused. He flipped the light switch close by; but, the electricity was out. He proceeded down the hall in the dark, barefooted, in an attempt to assess the damage. Unfortunately, he stepped on some glass in the hallway from a few of their large wood and glass framed family photos that fell from the wall leaving fragments of glass all over. He had a large gash in his right foot. Miriam was able to partially bandage up Bill’s foot; but, wasn’t able to completely stop the bleeding. She tried to call 911 to get somebody to provide help to Bill; but, had no phone service. She decided to take Bill to the emergency room at their local hospital; but, when she tried to open the garage door to get their car out, she realized that the door would not open due to the electrical outage. Then, an aftershock began shaking the place again which caused some substantial damage to the garage door. Panic set in.
