Final Trials Report

Final Report for Trial No. 1949 – Solenostemon 2013 1
RHS Trial of Solenostemon
Introduction to Solenostemon Solenostemon is a genus of around 60 species of evergreen, bushy subshrubby perennials from the forests of tropical Asia. They are mainly cultivated for their brightly coloured foliage, but produce raceme-like whorls of tiny flowers all year round which are often removed. For this trial, they were used as patio container plants and as summer bedding, although they can be grown as glasshouse plants. Outside, grow in humus rich moist but well drained soil enriched with well rotted organic matter. They prefer a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. Water freely in dry conditions and pinch out young shoots to promote bushy growth. Objectives The objectives of the trial were:
To assess for suitability for outdoor summer displays in open areas and patio containers
Recommend plants for Award of Garden Merit Judging The Solenostemon Trials Assessment Forum assessed entries in the trial monthly between July and October 2013 at Wisley and made two visits to Victoria Embankment Park in July and September using the following criteria:
Quality of foliage
Vigour
Pest and disease resistance
Hardiness
Longevity
Stability
Fade resistance Entries There were 92 entries in the trial at Wisley, 6 plants grown in the open ground and three in a container of each, submitted as plugs, unrooted cuttings and seed by breeders and nurseries in the UK and Europe. In London there were 14 entries gown as plants. Cultivation Seed was sown in mid-March into cells: 14 cells per entry with two seeds per cell. The tray was placed onto a bench heated to 24oC and misted every 30 minutes. Once germinated, seeds were then thinned to one seedling per cell. Twelve plants per entry were then potted into 9cm pots. Cuttings were placed into trays with cells and placed onto a bench heated to 24oC and misted every 30 minutes. The mist was then removed and trays covered in fleece. Plants were potted on to 9cm pots and removed from the heated bench. Plants were pinched. The trial bed was prepared using landscape fabric to cover the soil to stop weeds. Plants were planted in the ground through the landscape fabric on 24 June in two rows with 40cm between plants and 60cm between entries. Containers were planted up with three plants per entry on 26 June and placed on the field the next day. The

trial was irrigated using drip irrigation to both containers and plants in the ground. The front row of plants in the ground were pinched at regular intervals to restrict flowering. Pest and Disease There was very little encountered during the trial. Following a wet spell at the end of September some entries had suspected stem rot. Entry 29 suffered some damage caused by a badger when it got under the fence, which was subsequently reinforced. Other Findings The very hot weather during July was not beneficial to the plants. The bed was in a very exposed, south facing position at Wisley and the leaves of many entries were bleached by the continued direct sunlight and some entries suffered from scorch. The Forum considered the two sited trial very beneficial as the site in London was more shaded and leaves didn’t bleach to such an extent as at Wisley. It also gave the opportunity to assess varieties that did not have an entry at all, or not a complete entry at Wisley.
Plants Receiving AGMs During Trial The following are the plants thought to fulfil the Award of Garden Merit criteria during the trial and to be worthy of receiving the award. The criteria which a plant needs to fulfil in order to receive the award are:
excellent for ordinary garden use
available
reasonably resistant to pests and diseases
of good constitution
essentially stable in form and colour
reasonably easy to grow Hardiness ratings are as follows: H1c – Can be grown outside in the summer throughout most of the UK while daytime temperatures are high enough to promote growth.
