OLQP MISSION STATEMENT
Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedicat-ed to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, espe-cially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to en-courage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identify with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial harmo-ny and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the downtrodden everywhere. In this we strive for our parish commu-nity to be a caring, sharing, and loving family.
Go out to the whole world,
Proclaim the good news
to all creation.

OUR YOUTH DISCIPLES ARE ON A MISSION! Youth Ministry is partnering with Cath-olic Heart Work Camp this summer and need your support to help them bring the Matthew 25:35 mis-sion to North Haledon, NJ, July 18-24. Every donation counts - will you be a Mission Mate? Please visit the OLQP Work Camp Fundraiser page to make a dona-tion for a specific item, or to make a general dona-tion. Please also share the link with friends and fam-ily members interested in supporting our great group of youth disciples. Please contact Rebecca Grant Jenkins with any questions: [email protected].
FEAST ON THE STREET -- For the last 60 weeks during the
pandemic, OLQP parishioners have provided brown bag dinners to 150 people living on the streets of DC. Working with the DC Catholic Worker House, this ministry calls itself “Feast on the Street”! No surprise: Support for “Feast on the Street” is grow-ing! A group of friends and neighbors from the Burke communi-ty has decided to join with OLQP, beginning now, to share the load, and the fun, and the joy! The Burke team will provide food and water on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, and OLQP will do the 2nd and 4th Thursday. Our menu remains the same : centered on turkey, ham, or PB and J sandwich-es. Clothing and toiletries will also continue to be distributed by the OLQP team. Please check the OLQP Facebook page, to see more detail about what you can contribute to this most joyous and beautiful of ministries. Donations will be gratefully accepted on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, in the “Feast on the Street” collection bins in front of the parish Ministry Center. If you’d like to learn more about the ministry, and the many ways you can help, please contact Katie at [email protected]
NATIONAL FOSTER CARE MONTH – Can you imagine be-
ing 18 years old, and venturing into adulthood with no family support, guidance, or encouragement? No home to return to for Christmas? No one to help you with your resume or find and furnish your first apartment? LifeSet Network is an organization that supports youths aging out of the U.S. foster care system, by matching the kids with adults like you who can mentor, support and guide them. Check out www.LifesetNetwork.org to find out how you can help – your involvement could change the course of their life! Contact the Building Forever Families ministry for more info about foster care and adoption ([email protected] or [email protected]).
WEEKLY OLQP MOMENT
Join the parish community on Monday at 11:19am to reflect on the topic of Unity. There is no time requirement for your reflec-tion and no virtual meeting to join. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, please pause for your reflection knowing you are with others from the OLQP community. Anyone wishing to add the OLQP moment to their calendar can email "OLQP Moment" to Patrick Julius at [email protected] to receive the infor-mation in a calendar request.
Vaya a www.

NEWS FROM MEDOR Medor’s agro-forestry program purchased nearly six acres of barren land and plans to convert it into forestland. A tree nursery has been established there. The types of tree seeds planted are determined by soil analysis. The seedlings grown in the nursery will be transplanted onto the forestland. Some people in Medor have never seen a forest and do not understand the importance of having a forest in the community. Training on the influence of forestland on maintaining water supplies, and preventing soil erosion, floods and mudslides, and mitigating natural disasters has begun. Timote Georges, Director of Smallholder Farmers Alliance, the organization which implements Medor's agro-forestry program, likes to quote this Chinese proverb, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."
ATTENTION PATRONS OF THE ARLINGTON COMMUNITY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION – the branch

COVID-19 VACCINE — Neighborhood Health, Community Health Center has been arranging for COVID-19 vaccine shots for our clients at our food pantry for the last several weeks. They have now opened this up to churches and other community groups. And specifically, they have offered their services to Our Lady Queen of Peace parishioners living in Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax. Any parishioner who would like get vaccinated can give their name and telephone number to one of the porters outside the front doors of the church and you will be called to get you full information by our staff who will submit your application to Neighborhood Health. You will then receive a phone call in three to five days to set up an appointment for your vaccination. This service is available to parishioners 16 years and older. Those under the age of 18 when showing up for the vaccine must come with a parent or legal guardian, with papers of guardianship. If you haven’t been able to secure an appointment for a vaccine this is a great opportunity!

IT’S GREAT TO PUT A NAME TO A FACE – the first
best reason to have a copy of the 75th Anniversary Picture Directory. The second best reason is to have contact in-formation for Christmas cards, get well cards or expres-sions of sympathy. Please remember that contact infor-mation is offered only for OLQP members and should not be shared or sold to a political campaign or any other so-licitor. Thank you!
ATTENTION CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
PLEDGE DONORS March and April Capital Campaign statements have not yet been mailed because the program we use for tracking was recently updated and we are experiencing some is-sues. Rest assured, all pledge payments have been re-ceived and deposited. We are working with the software provider to resolve these issues so payments can be post-ed to your contribution records, at which point statements will be mailed out. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you have any questions related to your pledge account, please feel free to contact Chatty, [email protected] or Christina, [email protected].
GOOD NEWS FOR LIVE-STREAMING

You will be taken to the YouTube site where you can “subscribe” to OLQP’s YouTube site and access saved video and future live streamed Masses/Services.

ISIDORE'S GARDEN - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The garden beds to the side of the church grow produce to share with families in the parish's weekly food pantry distribution. Volunteers are needed from now through October to water, weed, and harvest the garden. If you are interested in signing up for a week or two this summer or want to learn more, please contact Ciara Malone at [email protected].
DURING THIS SEASON OF RENEWAL, we are grateful
for the recent legislation, the American Rescue Plan. It is a fresh start for repairing many holes in the fabric that have caused damage to our human community. As we note the continued increase in the numbers of households served by the OLQP Food Pantry and the food pantries throughout our Arlington community and our diocese, we applaud the legislation for addressing the priorities of hunger and poverty. In order for hunger to be ended for many and poverty greatly reduced, it is imperative that the temporary measures in the American Rescue Plan be made permanent. Ongoing and long-term support for families — for example, making the expanded child tax credit permanent — will go a long way to giving everyone a chance to feed their families. More information is available through Bread for the World, www.bread.org. Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.

es! The word “ascension” itself congers up images of Jesus
rising up into the clouds to join the Father and the Holy Spirit
somewhere “up there”…far, far away. The problem with this
is it can lead us to believe that heaven is “up there” and we
are “down here” and that God is far off and distant from us
and from our lives. This stands in stark contrast to the heart
and soul of the meaning and significance of the incarna-
tion. The truth of our God having become “incarnate” (in the
flesh) in Jesus, meaning that God is with us…and not off…
watching us from afar. We need to recall Jesus’ promise “I
am with you until the end”! These simple words are most
profound…there is no need for us to stand gawking skyward
with our jaws hanging open. While the physical presence of
Jesus Christ as a singular human and divine presence no long-
er walks the earth…but Christ is here, as close to us as our
own breath, keeping us alive to be his presence in our world.
As we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus let us celebrate the
presence of the Risen One in our midst! Before his ascension
Jesus gave a clear command and mission to his disciples…to
us. We are charged with preaching the “Good News” of Jesus
Christ and to be that healing, loving and welcoming presence
in a world filled with sickness, hatred and exclusion. Filled
with the “real presence we are sent forth to stand up and be
the voice of the voiceless, to speak out on behalf of those
who are silenced or ignored, to make sure that hatred, racism
and bigotry are not left unchecked. Filled with the Spirit we
speak the truth of the Gospel to power, weather convenient
or inconvenient, weather garnering us friends or marginaliz-
ing us, it is our call as disciples of Jesus Christ! And we are
able to do this precisely because “in God we live and move
and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Filled with the very pres-
ence of Divinity itself we are empowered and emboldened to
go forth and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ even to
the ends of the earth, not just with words but with action, by
how we live our life.
And so I ask myself, how might I be a healing, loving and wel-
coming presence to those who are “other”? How can I “stand
up” for the Gospel, in the public arena and in my personal
life? How do I experience the real presence of God in my
daily life?
Easter blessings,
Fr Tim

WE CAN'T REBUILD THE U.S. UNTIL WE SUPPORT FAMILIES
BY JIM WALLIS
COVID-19 pandemic was revelatory;
that's a term that speaks to
our nation's spiritual transfor-
mation more than it does to our poli-
tics.
In response to the crisis, President Joe
Biden has brought forward three
transformative bills: The American
Rescue Plan, passed by Congress in
March, the American Jobs Plan, and
the American Families Plan. We will
get to the important particulars of the
bills, but we must also go deeper than
the specifics, which will change as the
debate goes on.
The world-changing virus has shown
our society’s deep racial and economic
inequities, verifying what those with
prophetic courage have been saying
for years. And then, in the middle of
the pandemic, while we were all
watching our screens and being more
focused at home, we all saw the white
knee on a Black neck, which finally
changed many people’s worldview. A
new multiracial generation has poured
into the streets, saying that the sys-
tematic racism in policing — and all
our other social systems — is no long-
er tolerable.
When Biden was elected, many saw
him as an old white guy, who — at
best — would offer transitional poli-
cies; but Biden's proposed $6 trillion
trifecta of bills, if all enacted, would be
transformational. These programs of
relief, recovery, and rebuilding of
American society would be paid for by
the richest Americans and corpora-
tions, who have benefited most eco-
nomically in the last several decades,
even during the pandemic. It’s im-
portant to note that the women and
Black voters who elected Biden, and
whose organizing turned Georgia blue,
made these dramatic government pro-
posals for rescue, jobs, family, and
children possible.
These plans are not just about good
politics or good policy — they’re about
what government can do to relieve
human suffering, about whom govern-
ment should invest in. These are not
just political matters but ethical ones.
PODCAST: The Spiritual Consequenc-
es of Hoarding Wealth
So let’s look at Biden’s three big plans
from a moral, theological, and biblical
perspective.
First, we should examine what
“infrastructure” means. What we have
traditionally called the nation’s infra-
structure — roads and bridges, ports
and airports, and other modes of
transportation — is incomplete and, in
many places, dangerous. Both Demo-
crats and Republicans say they are for
traditional infrastructure improve-
ments. But the infrastructure of peo-
ple’s lives, especially those families
with low and even middle income and
the 63 percent of Americans living
paycheck to paycheck, is also in disre-
pair. Clean water and working water
pipes are fundamental life-and-death
issues for far too many poorer fami-
lies. Even food insecurity, the massive-
ly growing problem of hunger in Amer-
ica, is an issue of sustainable family
infrastructure, as is the daily care
needed for children and other family
members.
What makes a family able to work and
take care of each of its members? That
is the moral question that could unite
many of us. The capacity for health
care, self-care, child care, and elder
care are all foundational to our lives —
and both the new jobs and family
plans address all these needs. The jobs
plan in particular aims to create sus-
tainable jobs for caregivers — provid-
ing the infrastructure that parents
need to care for their families. Nurture
is necessary to the well-being and the
flourishing of a human society — and
that should be reflected in our
“infrastructure.” The many family-
focused provisions in these three plans
make this the most genuinely pro-
family and consistently pro-life agenda
supported by a president in a very
long time. Christians who care deeply
about these issues could truly make
meaningful progress on both by sup-
porting the passage and implementa-
tion of these plans.
Most people in the U.S., from all sides
of the political spectrum and across
lines of race, class, and gender, believe
that education is the key to the future.
Education, therefore, is also part of
the infrastructure of rebuilding. All of
our social data shows that the three
pillars of the jobs plan — guaranteeing
two years of preschool for all 3- and 4-
year-olds and adding two years of post
-high school education — would make
a great difference in upward social
mobility. The plan also increases Pell
Grants for college students who need
them and would provide subsidized
tuition for some students attend-
ing historically Black colleges and uni-
versities; this new educational infra-
structure would be an important step
10/10
in ensuring this country is committed
to racial and economic justice.
Of course, nothing affects the infra-
structure of our own county — and
the world — like climate change. With-
out mitigation and the beginning of a
reversal, we will constantly be moving
from one disaster to another. The
work it will take to transform our ener-
gy system from one based on destruc-
tive fossil fuels to the new clean ener-
gy economy means new jobs. We are
now learning that a safe, sustainable,
and prosperous economy based on
clean energy is also the best path for-
ward in the theological task of stew-
arding the creation itself.
But the biggest political issue being
debated in these bills is: How will we
pay for it?
And the moral answer to that is simp-
ly: fairness. To summarize that answer
from Secretary of the Treasury Janet
Yellen on Meet the Press: Corporate
income now amounts to only 7 per-
cent of federal tax revenue, with some
of our largest corporations paying no
tax at all, despite their rising share of
gross domestic product. Biden’s plans
call for corporations to pay their fair
share — at rates that they used to pay
before the Trump administration's tax
cuts. People making over $400,000 per
year would also go back to paying
what they have before; those making
below $400,000 would pay no new
taxes. A new tax fairness doctrine
would require the .3 percent of Ameri-
cans households that make more than
$1 million per year would have to pay
the same tax percentage rates on their
capital gains and profits that they and
other people pay on their wages. Ac-
cording to Yellen, the president thinks
wage workers should not pay a greater
percentage of their taxes than the
wealthiest individuals. This principle
aligns with the biblical text, “To whom
much has been given, much will be
required” (Luke 12:48).
We are returning to the age-old de-
bate over the role of government. In
his 1981 inaugural address, President
Ronald Reagan said “government is
not the solution to our problem, gov-
ernment is the problem” — a maxim
that has been in place for four decades
now. Reagan's maxim assumes the
market should be trusted to solve eve-
rything, that business should rule over
government, and that the wealthy
should be given more and more power
over our politics — even to influence
candidates and shape the laws of the
nation. These assumptions — which
favor wealth over democracy — have
ultimately produced a nation that is
not healthy for more and more peo-
ple, workers, families, and their chil-
dren, particularly Black, Indigenous,
and people of color who must contend
with the burden of living in a society
built on racist policies. The Republican
Party’s policy decisions reversed those
in place since President Franklin Roo-
sevelt, who, in the midst of the Great
Depression, observed that “when a
[person] is recovering from an illness,
wisdom dictates not only cure of the
symptoms but also removal of their
cause,” and therefore determined that
a more comprehensive and systemic
approach to national recovery was
necessary. Now again, in the wake of a
pandemic that revealed our nation’s
illness, we need to treat not just the
immediate need but the systemic driv-
ers of inequality that got us here.
But according to Republican oppo-
nents, these plans are too expensive
and represent “socialism.” But this
misleading line of attack obscures the
truth — that this is simply good, long-
overdue social policy involving pro-
grams and benefits that many other
capitalist nations provide for their citi-
zens. As a Christian, I am not com-
mitted to either capitalism or social-
ism, but to economic fairness and jus-
tice, with particular concern for those
Jesus calls on us to care for: people
experiencing food insecurity and pov-
erty. Let’s have that moral debate.
Enacting these plans will help provide
the comprehensive infrastructure our
society needs to enable prosperity to
be broadly shared, rather than contin-
uing with an economy that has dispro-
portionately benefited the wealthy
few for so long.
The better theological and biblical
view of a society’s health is one that
neither trusts the power of wealth, nor
submits to the absolute power of the
state, but provides the balances hu-
man nature requires: Each sector does
what they do best and regulates each
other, ensuring that our public deci-
sions serve the most moral determi-
nant of what we call “the common
good,” where the well-being, flourish-
ing, and freedom of all of our neigh-
bors — especially those different than
us — will be respected as fully human
beings, made in the image and likeness
of God.
Do these bills, and the future country
they imagine, fulfill that biblical
worldview? That is the debate we
ought to be having.
