Inspection 1. Checking the leak voltage (using SLD-Hoslen 192 or Bakon 192)

The following factors cause electric current to be leaked from the tip to the P.W.B. and the device, resulting in adverse effects on objects being soldered. For this reason, check the leak voltage periodically.

Even though an insulative ceramic material is used, long-term use has caused the heating element to deteriorate and the leak voltage to increase.

Accumulation of oxides on the parts such as tip/element cover caused contact failure to be generated and leak voltage to increase.

How much leak voltage is normal?

The lower the leak voltage, the better. The MIL standard which has been abolished at present specifies that the leak voltage is designated to be lower than 2mV; therefore, all Hanstar station-type soldering irons have been delivered with the leak voltage set to 2mV or less in conformance to the MIL standard. The MIL standard is a US military-based standard and the standard MIL-STD 2000A regarding soldering irons has been abolished.

Point for measuring the leak voltageMeasure the leak voltage after adjusting the temperature setting to the maximum. When the leak voltage is measured at the highest temperature, the highest leak voltage will be recorded. If normal results are obtained even in unfavorable conditions such as at the highest temperature, it is judged that normal results will be obtained at other temperature settings. (This method is based on the MIL standard.)

If the leak voltage is higher, what actions should be taken?

1. If the heating element has deteriorated

- Replace the heating element with a new one. The heating element will be oxidized and blackened in this case.

2. If oxides have accumulated on other parts

- Remove oxides with steel wool (Tinsel Tip Cleaner Top S-603). An oxidized tip causes the wetting characteristics to deteriorate. The chemical is convenient to use for recovering the tip wetting characteristics.

Inspection 2. Checking the tip-to-ground resistanceWhen Oxide and flux stuck on the tip, the element cover and nut will cause the tip-to-ground resistance to become higher. As a result, the leak voltage will become higher; therefore, periodically check the tip-to-ground resistance.

* For the tip-to-ground resistance, let the current temperature increase to the set temperature to make the temperature stable before measurement.

How much tip-to-ground resistance is normal?

As with leak voltage, the lower the tip-to-ground resistance, the better.The MIL standard which has been abolished at present specifies that the resistance is designated to be lower than 5; therefore, all HANSTAR station-type soldering irons have been delivered with the resistance set to 2 or less which is stricter than that of the MIL standard.

If the tip-to-ground resistance is higher, what actions should be taken?

Polish the contact sections such as the tip and element cover with sandpaper, steel wool, etc. to remove any oxide films. An oxidized tip causes the wetting characteristics to deteriorate. A soldering chemical paste is convenient to use for recovering the tip wetting characteristics.

Inspection 3. Checking the tip temperatureIf the tip, element cover, etc. are oxidized, heat conduction will be deteriorated, causing the tip temperature to become lower, resulting in soldering failure. To prevent soldering failure, measure the tip temperature daily.

HANSTAR FG-100 Thermometer The Hanstar FG-100 v2 thermometer provide fast, accurate tip temperature measurements using a fine CA wire sensor (0.2). The FG-100 measures tip temperatures as well as solder pot temperatures (with optional temperature probe.) Lightweight, easy-to-replace sensors provide accurate measurement of tips for verification or calibration processes. HANSTAR FG-100 v2- Modified version, it is used to measure soldering iron temperature when using the sensor 191-212.

It is with hole at the bottom that can fit TP-01 thermometer probe that you can use to measure also SMD Rework Hot Air temperature or TP-02 (a1130) needle probe so you can check the soldering pot boilers temperatureIn general, the optimal temperature range for soldering is 300C to 500C, and that for SMD rework system is 300C to 600C. Suggested Replacement rate of sensor: The suggested sensor replacement period is after 50 times of usage, but depends on the temperature used and the components in the solder and flux.If you use lead-free solder, the sensor needs to be replaced more frequently. If the sensor degrades because it is being eaten away by the solder, it will register a low temperature. Even if the sensor is not broken, it is suggested to replace it after about 50 measurements.

How To Calibrate Your Soldering Iron in Two Steps A soldering iron is like a piano; once in a while it needs a tuning.

Whether you're using an old iron hand piece or just bought a replacement, calibrating your soldering iron should be a weekly routine.

The biggest setback of all soldering stations is the inaccuracy of its temperature reading over time. As the station and iron get older, the power gets weaker. The station may have a reading of 700F (371C), but that doesn't mean it's actually that temperature. In fact, you may be soldering at 650F (343C).

Or worse, if you replace your station with a new and advanced hand piece, your station may be set at a temperature when, in fact, it's actually 50 degrees hotter, which can ruin the PCB or component you're working on.

That's why it's important to calibrate your soldering iron regularly.

How To Calibrate Your Soldering Iron and Heating Element

There are different types of tip thermometers and calibrators out there, but for the purposes of this blog, we are showing you the Hakko FG-100-02.

Step 1: Install The Sensors

Your tip thermometer will come with a set of tip sensors.

These sensors need to be looped onto the thermometer board. Be sure to match the blue and red sides of the sensor wire with the posts that are marked with blue and red dots on the thermometer board. These sensors are in effect, thermocouples, and polarity matters!

Note, each sensor typically lasts 30 to 50 measurements. The unit will come with ten total, and replacements are relatively inexpensive.

Step 2: Test The Soldering Iron

Set your soldering iron to the desired temperature.

Once the station is up to that temperature, touch the soldering tip against the midpoint of the sensor. Be sure you do not press down against the wire. This could cause the wire to stretch which will create erroneous readings.

Keep the soldering iron pressed against that sensor until the thermometer finishes calibrating. Once the temperature of the thermometer stops moving upward, you will see an accurate reading of your soldering station and iron temperature.

After the soldering iron has reached the set temperature and stabilized, rest the tip flat on the sensor and apply a little solder to create a heat bridge. Keep the tip in contact with the sensor until the peak reading is achieved. It is best to repeat this 2 or 3 times to ensure you receive similar peak readings to be sure you are measuring correctly. What you will see on the digital display of the tip thermometer is an accurate reading of your soldering irons tip temperature.
