2008 Beijing Olympic Village

Background China, like many developing countries, is experiencing a tremendous increase in demand for energy - and specifi-cally renewable energy. A large part of this growth is fu-eled by the expanding commercial & industrial sector, which are the largest users of energy and emitters of CO2. Renewable energy technologies that are able to displace this energy demand have been identified as being essen-tial. New buildings will be required to adhere to a new strict energy saving standard that is 50% over the current building standards, with the aim to reduce traditional energy consumption by as much as 65%. In accordance with these energy objectives, the Olympic Park Developer had a mandate to incorporate innovative green technologies into the 2008 Beijing Olympic Village. As part of that mandate, Conserval Engineering’s SolarWall® and PV/TTM systems were chosen to be show-cased on a central building in the Village. Solution The developer of the Beijing Olympic Village had previ-ously installed a SolarWall® system and was very pleased with the excellent results. This lead to the inclusion of the SolarWall technology in the Village. During this period, Conserval Engineering launched their new SolarWall PV/TTM hybrid system, which combines the SolarWall technology of solar air heating, with PV (electricity generation) in one energy system. The Solar-Wall PV/T system offers numerous benefits and features, such as; the SolarWall panels act as the racking system for the PV (no expensive racking or mounting issues to worry about), SolarWall PV/T has a higher PV efficiency

output versus traditional PV (removes the excess heat/cools the PV panels from the back, which increases their efficiency and life expectancy). This thermal (heat) energy is then ducted into rooftop air handling units where it is used in the heating system to displace the conven-tional load. This also maximized the potential CO2 dis-placement because the SolarWall PV/T system produces 200-300% more energy compared to PV alone. Natural Resources Canada, recognizing the potential of the SolarWall PV/T system, provided partial funding sup-port so that this project - which is a first-of-its-kind - could be showcased in front of a world audience in Beijing. Conserval designed both a traditional wall mounted Solar-Wall® system, which was 33m2 (355 ft2); and a roof mounted SolarWall PV/TTM system, which was 50m2 (540 ft2) and included 50 BP 200 watt PV panels. Results The completed SolarWall PV/T system was sized for 10 kW of electricity and 20kW of thermal heating energy. The Beijing Olympic Village building will be used as a kinder-garten now that the Olympic games have finished, and the super low energy consumption building (75% less en-ergy then a conventional Chinese building) will stand as a demonstration of what is possible with energy efficient technologies.
