Solar Tours Continue for the 2017-2018 Year

With a new academic year well under-way, Southeastern Electric has begun to offer our Solar Tours again to area public schools.

During this past April, SEC hosted its first ever Solar Tour with Colbert school. Sixth and Eighth grade classes visited the Cooperative eager to learn about the facility.

Now, the facility is equipped with a pa-vilion and picnic tables! On days when the weather is nice, students and faculty can enjoy the outdoors while hearing about the solar facility. The students and teachers are then given a chance to ask questions after the presentation.

The classes are then allowed to enter the facility where SEC’s Assistant Man-ager James Fox, gives an in-depth les-son on the functionality of the panels.

During the presentation, the students will have a chance to win some neat prizes for the correct answers concern-ing solar energy. No one will leave empty handed! Goody bags are given to each student and faculty member when they leave to get back on the bus.

SEC has always been an advocate for learning-especially about energy conser-vation and innovation. This is one of the ways that the Co-op engages in showing our commitment to the communities and the schools that we serve.

SEC Supports Area Schools During Red Ribbon Week

Holiday HoursClosed Thursday, November 23rd and

Friday November 24th in observance ofthe Thanksgiving Holiday.

We will return on Monday, November 27that 8:00 a.m. for a regular business day.

For over a decade and a half, Southeastern Electric Coop-erative has supported area schools during the National Red Ribbon Week. This week falls toward the end of October each year. It is during this time that students at schools wear a red ribbon, or “bracelet,” to show their support for a drug free youth! Schools in the five counties that the Cooperative serves received enough red bracelets this year for each student to participate. That is over 13,000 bracelets! The bracelets can be worn the entire week.***

Employees Attended the 7th Annual Colton’s Run

Tours

SEC Employees participated in the 2017 Colton’s Run again this year. The run was held on October 21st. This annual event is held in Downtown Durant and is in memory of Colton Sherrill, son of Trace and Dena Sherrill of Durant. The 10 year old athlete and Durant Main Street volunteer passed away 9 years ago while playing basketball from an unknown heart defect. The proceeds from the race will be used to provide education in Cardio Pulmonary resuscitation and use of Automated Exter-nal Defibrillators (AED’s), to provide emer-gency equipment, including but not limited

to AEDs, for use by schools and communi-ties, to fund higher education scholarships, and community projects. This year they had a Special Goal where the proceeds would be used to continue construction on the cross-country track at SOSU. It would provide a safe, well-de-signed area that would be utilized by both schools for practice and to hold meets. The track would also be open for the community to run/walk, which would offer an additional option to improve the health of the resi-dents. This year was SEC’s fifth year to partici-pate in the race. ***

If you are unable to bring your class-room to us, we can come to you with our presentation! We will bring a Pow-erPoint along with a portable solar panel to show your students.

If you would like to schedule a tour for your classroom, or if you need us to come to you with our presentation, please call Jim or Kevin at 580-745-9463.

The target grades are 6th and 8th, however no grade will be turned down.***

A special thank you to all of the schools who have participated in the Solar Tours this far. We look

forward to seeing you again in the future school years!

Daylight Savings Time is right around the corner! Everyone knows this time of year when we “fall back” and lose a precious hour of daylight. This means shorter days and lon-ger nights-and winter is just around the corner! Did you know that this is also the perfect time and reminder to change out those batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detec-tors in your homes? Taking the time and spending the money to change out these batteries can potentially save yours and your families lives. If you have any questions on how to change out your batteries, please contact your local Fire Depart-ment.***

Winter is upon us. Keeping our homes warm during the cold months is vital. There are things that you can do inside as well as outside of your home to prepare The checklist to the right will help you make sure your home is prepped and ready for ol’ Jack Frost to make an appearance! For questions, please call us at 580-745-9463!
