The Solar Decathlon is a competition which brings together universities from all across the globe in an attempt to make the most energy and resource efficient solar powered housing and raise awareness about sustainable, affordable and industrialized solutions in this field.
MOR Team TU Delft has been selected as one of sixteen teams to compete in the 2019 edition of the competition in Szentendre, Hungary. An interdisciplinary group of 35+ students will design a solar powered housing solution within two years, build a working 1:1 prototype and ship it to Hungary where it will be tested on ten comepetition criteria. Afterwards, the structure will be brought back and assembled in the Green Village, similar to the Pret-a-Loger House, which was TU Delft’s award-winning solution for the 2014 competition in Versailles.
The 2019 edition focuses on energy retrofitting, which is why TU Delft’s concept MOR (Modular Office Renovation) seeks to transform three
iconic high-rise towers of the Europoint Complex in Rotterdam into residential usage using modular and prefabricated solutions. The design will be fully net positive to its surroundings in terms of energy, water, air, biomass and materials.
An integrated team across disciplines will design, engineer, promote and acquire finances to build their solution with industry partners and professors and measure its performance against other teams in the summer of 2019. Disciplines involved include architecture, structural design, building physics and performance, materials sustainability, electrical and mechanical design, pr and communications, management and sponsorship and finances.
