    National Presidents Founders Day Message

    Dear Sisters,

As we pause to honor our five Founders, visualize for a few mo-ments what life may have been like for these women so many

years ago. Colby College in Waterville, Maine, was among thefirst colleges to recognize the right of women to attend col-

lege, and in 1871, Mary Low became the Colleges first female

student. For two years, she remained the only woman studenton campus until she was joined by Louise Helen Coburn, Eliza-beth Gorham Hoag, Ida Mabel Fuller, and Frances Mann in

1873. The campus environment was probably tough for thesefive young ladies. The male students likely left the women iso-

lated, ignored, and ridiculed. Professors probably didnt want them on campus. This

isolation brought those five young women into a close knit circle of support. Theywanted to pave the way and create a better environment for future generations of

women. This commitment led them to form Sigma Kappa.

Today, 136 years later, we are honoring these brave young women and celebrating

the gift of Sigma Kappa that they have shared with over 140,000 women.

Have you ever thought about Sigma Kappa as a gift from our Founders? We are a

society entrenched in the tradition of giving gifts to loved ones for all types of occasions

birthdays, holidays, weddings, baby showers, big/little week, etc. Our Founders gave

us the ultimate gifta lifetime of sisterhood.

It is now our responsibility to ensure that Sigma Kappa remains a strong presence oneach of our campuses. We must be committed to be the encouragers, the change

agents, the protectors, and the sisters that Sigma Kappa needs us to be every day in

order to be a viable and thriving organization for another 136 years.

May we never forget our past or the women who came before us and built this sister-hood we know today as Sigma Kappa. We must continue the tradition of giving the

gift of Sigma Kappa to future generations. On behalf of the national council of SigmaKappa, I wish you a Happy Founders Day!

    Loyally in Sigma Kappa,

    SOKY Sister
