Three area bridal fashion experts —Alyssa Kahle, owner and designerat Alyssa Kristin; Pamela Rowell,

senior sales consultant/fashions buyerfor Volle’s Bridal; and Bonnie Wegner, ofBridal Boutique — give advice on buyingthe perfect dress.

Let your persona shineKahle:“I like to start by getting to

know the bride’s personality. This meansdiscovering her favorite feature(s) andthe feel and atmosphere she is trying tocreate for her big day. That information, coupled with her vision, is a great launchpad for sketching design options customto the bride.”

Keep the entourage at homeAlthough you might want to share the

moment with everyone you know, expertsadvise keeping dress shopping intimate.

Rowell:“The most common mistakebrides make when shopping for theirdress is bringing too many people.Toomany opinions end up in total confusion, and the bride’s voice never is heard.Keep it small.”

Wegner:“While it is nice to get feed-back from friends and family, ultimately,a bride needs to listen to herself. Gettingtalked in to or out of a gown by othershappens all the time.”

Shopping online? Keep it for researchPurchasing a gown online may seem

appealing, especially at discountedprices, but be cautious; buy from anauthorized dealer.

Rowell:“The Internet is a great placeto look for ideas and styles from differ-ent designers. However, purchasing awedding gown online is not a good idea.Designers do not sell or authorize onlinesales; they sell to selected reputableretailers.”

Kahle:“Always purchase directly fromthe designer or authorized retailer. Be

smart and savvy; if approached prop-erly, this can be a great way for bridesto access a larger market of gowns anddesigners.”

For the budget consciousCreate a budget that allows for some

wiggle room.Wegner:“My best advice is to create a

budget that includes alterations, veil andaccessories and then back those thingsout so that the budget for the dress is ac-curate. No matter what the budget, stick-ing to it will make the buying experienceless stressful.”

Rowell:“There are dresses for bridesin all price ranges, only you can de-cide what that budget is. Don’t let a fewhundred dollars make the difference ofthe dress you love and the one that fit intoyour budget.”

Kahle:“There is a myth that customgowns are only for big spenders.Workwith a designer to get the couture gownlook for a price that is just right.”

Designer Borris Powell has always been abit of a maverick. Born and raised Piedmont,Alabama, Powell hails came from what he callsa very talented athletic family right in the heartof sports country. Despite being blessed withthe gift of speed, Auburn football and life as asportsman held no interest for him.

“My mother was a seamstress and my AuntShelby was a fashion model,” Powell explained.“And every Sunday, Shelby was that lady.Youwanted to see what she was wearing at churchbecause she was so beautiful.”

His aunt introduced him to fashion, bigSouthern hats and the foundations of gallantstyle that define country elegance. Powell’smother, even when hard at work, let her son tagalong after school, which stoked Powell’s keenfashion heart and vogue soul.

“I was always a mommy’s boy, and I lived vi-cariously between these two women, learningabout aesthetic and style,” Powell said.

However, it wasn’t until Powell first came toChicago — touring as a musician in a presti-gious drum and bugle corps in 1995 — that hemet his first real first fashion designer. Fallinghard in love with Chicago, he would soon callit home while also discovering his true callingtoward fashion.

Present-day, Powell has surely made a

name for himself. As a designer, his reper-toire calls heavily on the influence of old-school Christian Dior: classic lines, regal andromantic beauty, and understated sophisti-cation, all custom-built for the woman whobears a touch of bravado and deep-wovenclass.While originally focused ball gownsand dresses, Powell’s business grew solelythrough word of mouth. Therefore, the call forPowell’s work took new forms.

“I love evening wear and gowns for specialoccasions. As a designer, that’s always going tobe my first love,” Powell said.“But fashion haschanged so much, even in the last decade.”

As such, Powell ‘s style is sought out no lon-ger just for the evening dress, but for everydaywear for enterprising women from all walks oflife. Just like better-known celebrity designerssuch as Valentino and Isaac Mizrahi, demandfor Powell’s hands to dress women of all shapesand sizes has increased each year.

His ready-to-wear collections include classyshort dresses, skirts and tops, which put to useboth bold reds along with softer, understatedearth tones and colors that let the lines of con-struction dazzle a woman’s natural curves. Oneimportant tenet of Borris Powell Designs is tohighlight what the designer believes to be themost elegant parts of a woman’s body, particu-larly her shoulders, the neck and the back.

Within Powell’s collections, smooth yetstrong pieces such as his Rise of the Empresscashmere coat (seen here in grey, $1800)

speak to the confidence and elegance we lovein the American professional woman. Most re-cently, Borris Powell Designs’ accessories havetaken flight. His line of clutch purses and hand-bags — known as BjP — has become a mostpopular addition to trunk shows. Likewise, BJPpurses themselves have become a must-havefor existing clients. For BjP, Powell selects hisown leather, custom-made with Powell’s uniquedesigns and bespoke textures.

As one would expect, Powell has donegowns for galas galore and also famoustelevised events including the Oscars and theGrammys. Most recently, he dressed his friend, casting director Holland Weathers, for the 2014Emmy Awards.

Certainly both well-heeled consumers ofhigh fashion and fellow stylists have takennotice. Anna Hovet, often known as Chicago’squeen of comfort, notes Powell’s devotion totimeless elements of fashion.

“Borris Powell designs in a classic standardof elegance that transports the wearer and theviewers into elevated sophistication,” Hovetsaid about her fellow Chicagoan.

Affable and easygoing, Borris Powell canstraightforwardly describe the woman heknows, and the woman he dresses.

“My lady loves the spotlight but doesn’tseek it out. And she doesn’t have to,” he said.“She’s very classic, very demure and verydown-to-earth but loves the unpretentiousstatement with a pop of color.”

When the wedding ends, leftovers areusually tossed in the trash.

“Food, cake, flowers, candles, paper goods get thrown away in excess,”said Carlene Smith of Naturally YoursEvents, an eco-friendly wedding and event-planning company.

Smith started Naturally Yours to combine herpassion for celebrations with her passion forthe environment.

“I wanted to have a business I could be proudof that could help alleviate some of that wastethat is so common in this industry,” she said.

Jamie Davis, co-owner of Greenhouse Loft, has been planning eco-friendly events since2009. She became more involved with the pro-cess when a space she used to host events wasretrofitted and declared sustainable.

“Sustainable living and events have alwaysbeen something I’ve been passionate about, soit was a great fit,” Davis said.

Both Naturally Yours and Greenhouse Loftare part of The Green Wedding Alliance, anonprofit coalition of environmentally awareand socially conscious vendors.

At the start, Smith recommended establish-ing what aspect of the event takes precedence.

“It all starts with your top priorities,” Smith

said.“If that is food, then choosing the rightcaterer that fits your ideals, budget and tastesis a great place to start.”

Do research on vendors. Ask if they run asustainable business, where its source materi-als come from and if they have compost andrecycling programs.

“The florist you work with should be sourc-ing locally or responsibly, avoiding flowerfoam and sprays,” Davis said.“You can workwith stationary [vendors] for your invite thatuse recycled papers and toxic free inks.Thecaterer you use should be a caterer that is alsosourcing locally, organically and seasonally. If you pick other sustainable and like-mindedvendors, your event can definitely be consid-ered a green event. The details go a long way.”

Hosting a sustainable event doesn’t have tobe expensive. Both planners recommend sim-plifying whenever possible and catering theevent to what is efficient and economical.

“Sometimes sourcing things locally and sea-sonally can be more cost effective,” Davis said.“Keep things simple. Consider cocktail-styleevents over full-plated meals if cost is an issue.Cocktail-style events will cut down on food, staff and rental costs.Think about [creating]a signature cocktail using seasonal herbs orsyrups, instead of a full bar, for an event.”

In their homes, Smith and Davis heightentheir sustainable practices.

“I personally try to cut down on theamount of waste I produce,” Smith said.“This includes composting and recycling.I also try to be aware of the type of clean-ing products and soaps we buy. Finally, it issuch an easy thing to really avoid drinkingout of plastic water bottles and using plasticgrocery bags.”

“Using green cleaning supplies, turn-ing off lights and appliances, recycling ordonating things you don’t need,” she said.“There are so many things people can do tolive a more sustainable lifestyle. I think mostpeople know in their hearts what is good forthem and the environment.”

It was an idea rooted in self-promotion.

Kelly Horvath, creator of in-dependent wedding expo IndieWed, came up with the notion ofa bridal fair inspired by the indiemovement while trying to findways to promote her own smallbusiness, a stationary companycalled Paper Stories.

“Wedding blogs didn’t reallyexist yet, and I didn’t know whereto advertise to find the kind ofunique clients I wanted [for PaperStories],” Horvath said.“Afterselling my work for several yearsat various indie craft fairs suchas the Renegade Craft Fair inChicago and getting quite a fewwedding clients from it, I wishedthere was something similar butstrictly for weddings.”

Indie Wed’s first event was heldin 2010. According to Horvath, what she imagined would be afew vendors and several hundredattendees turned into an expofeaturing 56 vendors and morethan 1100 guests.

“The first year I didn’t knowanyone,” she said.“I contacted a

few vendors I found in magazinesor online. Photographer JeremyLawson put me in touch withmany vendors who would be-come reoccurring exhibitors andalso friends. After the first event, there was a buzz and I just startedgetting emails. Indie Wed is nowthe longest-running independentwedding show in the country.”

Horvath described Indie Wedas an expo where “booths andtables look more like a Pintrestboard come to life rather than astale trade show exhibit.” Guestsare encouraged to interact withvendors and sample servicesand products.

The expo’s next event will beheld on Jan. 31, 2015 at the Raven-swood Event Center on Chicago’sfar-north side. This will be thecompany’s sixth winter show.Horvath plans to dedicate thefirst two floors of the event spaceto live musical performances, food tastings and models wear-ing the latest wedding fashions, along with wedding professionalsand vendors.

She is also working with anevent planner to turn a portion ofthe center into a lounge area forguests to relax.

“I think it is important to offersomething new and fresh eachyear,” she said.“This year, we willbe working with Jayne Weddingswho has some pretty amazingideas for transforming the thirdfloor into an exotic destination.”

Lizz Sisson, a photographerat Studio Starling and Indie Wedvendor, said that the expo attracts

the type of clientele she feels hercompany connects with the most.

“As a vendor, it’s like cominghome,” she said.“[It’s] a won-derful place to see all types ofartists [and] everyone can bevery creative with their space.Youare side by side with people youwork with to put together wed-dings for clients. It’s nice that we

can all make each other shine.”Holly Greenhagen of Dame

Couture, a bridal shop thatspecializes in what Greenhagenterms “vintage restyling,” hasbeen with Indie Wed since itsfirst event.

“My business caters to thebride who’s looking for morethan just pretty things,” shesaid. “She’s looking for ethicalproduction, alternative style, integrity. A wedding expo thatattracts that bride is the kindof wedding expo I’m interest-ed in participating in. It’s en-riching to meet other vendorswho are small independentbusiness owners.”

With the success of Indie Wedestablished, Horvath is look-ing to expand her independentmindset into other aspects of thewedding industry, including pop-up bridal shops and informativeworkshops for couples and busi-ness owners. She is also lookingto write a book of weddinginspirations and advice.

Horvath has also been work-ing on projects that make themove beyond weddings andrelate to parenting and families.

“As a mom of two and havingwatched many of our previous at-tendees move from newlyweds tonew parents, I think it is a naturalprogression,” she said.

The American Society of In-terior Designers — IllinoisChapter (ASID-IL) hosted

the 2014 Celebration of DesignGala on Sept. 12 at The Langham,Chicago. Sponsored by mediagiants Modern Luxury/InteriorsChicago and Contract Magazine, the event featured the best ofthe best in today’s contract andresidential design in Illinois. Thegala was held in the DevonshireBallroom, located in the famed52-story AMA Plaza (formerly IBMBuilding), which was designedby German-American pioneeringarchitect Ludwig Mies van derRohe. The building, an iconic Chi-cago landmark, embraces archi-tecturally significant design andsteel-and-glass material minimal-ism, which was the ideal setting tooffer awards, drinks and a lovelymeal to design professionals.

“The Langham, Chicago is

such a stunning location, botharchitecturally and as modeledin its design aesthetic,” said Ja-net Davidsen, ASID-IL president.“It only seemed fitting to honorthe state of Illinois’ most talentedgroup of designers at such a set-ting. We also looked for a spacethat could hold a large numberof guests—The Devonshire Ball-room is ideal for a cocktail anddining reception.”

The ASID-IL communicationsdirector, Jase Frederick said:“Hosting at the Langham, Chi-cago will only help to elevatethe event’s standing as one ofthe most premier design galasin the industry.”

For 11 years, the Celebrationof Design Gala has recognizedASID-IL members, InternationalInterior Design Associationmembers and registered expertIllinois interior designers.

“The 2012 and 2013 Galaswere sophisticated, artistic af-fairs held at the Art Institute of

Chicago,” Davidsen said. “2014’sGala was an elegant and luxuri-ous affair. The Gala broughttogether over 200 ASID mem-bers, industry influencers andprominent area press.”

Per usual, ASID-IL grantedawards in the categories ofcontract, residential, historicrestoration and product design.New sought-after accolades thisyear included outdoor space— contract; outdoor space —residential; singular space —residential; and the IndustryPartner Award, which honoredone new product innovation. The Design Excellence Awardsprogram is the state’s leadingdesign competition; brilliancein design throughout the state iscelebrated and honored.

“The coveted awards werepresented in 11 contract, nineresidential and seven additionalcategories that ran the gamut fromhistoric restoration to new productinnovation,” Frederick said.

A Celebrationof DESIGN

Page 11: Soiree

As the holiday season ap-proaches, you will see a rise inevents and celebrations. Floralarrangements for spring andsummer events easily lendthemselves to bold, bright col-ors. However, the drop in tem-perature doesn’t have to meanthat monochromatic or holidayspecific colors are the only wayto go. Floral arrangements forthe cold winter months allow forthe experimentation with deep, rich textures and colors. Weasked a couple of local floristsabout fall floral trends.

Winter weddings“For fall, in addition to the

romantic look, we will getbrides that will want bright, bold colors and lots of texture,”said Liz Zimmer of Jane’s BlueIris in Hinsdale. “Moving on towinter, the weddings will leantowards mostly whites, creams, and grays. The variety of flow-ers that come in that colorpalette adds so much interest toevery piece.”

“If you are talking about win-ter weddings, you aren’t goingto see the red while and greenscheme,” said Cyndi Weber ofPhilips Flowers in LaGrangePark. “You are talking about thedeeper reds or burgundy, whiteand frost.”

Back to schoolAutumn means back to school,

homecomings and winterdances.Wrist corsages are stillpopular amongst the young aca-demics; however, according toZimmer, the female students arecoordinating the look.

“Many high school femalestudents come in with pictures oftheir dresses and discuss whatwe can do to match the dress asbest as possible,” Zimmer said.“The male students typically willget a white rose, but that seemsto be changing a bit now. Someof the girls will ask us to be morecreative than a rose boutonnierefor their date.”

Holiday partyHoliday office parties and

corporate events can bechallenging to put together, especially with the variety ofholidays that are celebratednear the end of the year. BaxterPhilips of Phillips Flowers sug-gests neutral colors for thesetypes of events to make themmore inclusive.

Bringing it homeFor the fall, fresh cut stems

and rich fall colors are popularoptions for the home.

“Pumpkins are the con-tainer for fall,” Weber noted.“You have all your textures, grasses, that excitement tothe pumpkin.”

In winter, reds and whites arepopular, along with fresh win-tergreens, cedar and holly. Thetrends lend themselves to a nat-ural botanical woodland type. Ifyou’re looking to decorate yourhome into a winter wonderland,Weber suggested amaryllistulips, garden roses, anemones, lilies and hydrangea as coldweather flowers. Gold or silvermercury glass vases, instead ofclear glass, have gained popu-larity. This adds what floristssaid is glamour and elegance toan arrangement.

However, taking into consid-eration the look of the room youbefore you decorate to decidewhat flowers will best compli-ment it was highly suggested.

Similar to fashion and beauty, you see trends in floral arrange-ments. However, individual tasteis still the primary force of put-ting any look together.

“Everyone is different,”Phillip said. “One customerwill want the natural look, theother gold and colors, but that’swhat’s fun about it. It’s customdesigned for their vision.”

The evening started with fashionistas buzzingalong the red carpet outside of Harris Theatre forMusic and Dance — a bright spot on Chicago’sperforming arts community. The bouncers heldback sharply dressed ticket holders whom wereawaiting the 2014 Macy’s Glamorama event: anight full of music, fashion and support for theRonald McDonald House Charities of Chicago-land and Northwest Indiana.

“It’s a memorable evening of music, fashionand compassion for a truly important cause,” saidTerry Lundgren, chairman and chief executive of-ficer of Macy’s.

Meanwhile, on the inside, a star-studdedcast of talent walked the red carpet, behind avelvet rope, for behind-the-scenes interviewsand photographs.

Headliner Jason Derulo — who started hiscareer by penning songs for Lil Wayne, Pitbull andDiddy — flashed his pearly whites as he walkedthrough the door. Derulo’s “Talk Dirty” hit soldmore than 5 million singles worldwide and reapedover 150 million YouTube views. Derulo’s currentsingle,“Wiggle” is his wildest growing single todate — Top 10 on Billboard, iTunes and Shazam.

Before You Exit, Macy’s iHeart Radio RisingStar contest winners — with more than 7.3 millionvotes — also strutted their stuff down the carpetbefore the fashion show. This handsome band ofbrothers from Orlando has popped on the musicscene with sharp hooks and upbeat rock.

The VIP of the red carpet, however, was 10-year old Samantha Roberson. Samantha wasdiagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma,a cancer that develops within the connectivetissues of the body, which affects the musclesand bones. Samantha, still fighting cancer withchemotherapy sessions, has found great solacein the help given by the Ronald McDonald Housenear Lurie Children’s Hospital.

“The Ronald McDonald House is a home awayfrom home for families of children with complexmedical needs,” said Martine Reardon, chiefmarketing officer of Macy’s.“Macy’s is proud topartner with this outstanding organization thatprovides hope and support for families in need.”

This year’s theme, Fashion Rocks, made the in-delible connection between music and fashion toinspire self-expression as well as to fuse Macy’ssignature mix of pop-culture, style, music anddance. Professional models wore the best of fall2014 fashions — Tommy Hilfiger,Weekend MaxMara, Ryan Seacrest, INC, Impulse, Hello Kitty,Calvin Klein and Diesel — as they paced up anddown ramps in a cleverly designed set.

“Even with all the opportunities I have in mylife to create, I still consider Glamorama to be ahighlight of my year,” said Myron Johnson, cho-reographer and show director.“Theater, dance, fashion, music and an important cause…whatcould possibly be more fulfilling than that?”

The night continued, post fashion show, at theRooftop Terrace at Millennium Park. Rock-themedsponsor lounges, delectable treats in little pack-ages, fare inspired by Macy’s Culinary CouncilChef Stephanie Izard, libations and photo oppor-tunities kept the evening full of anticipation.

Many bakers and cake design-ers fantasize about opening uptheir own shop.Tammy Montesinoswas one of those dreamers.

After more than 25 years ofindustry experience, Montesinosand her husband, Abel, broughttheir vision to life. Sweet T’sBakery & Cake Studio, locatedin downtown Arlington Heights, opened this year on June 21, andbusiness is booming.

“My one and only job was withCentral Continental Bakery inMount Prospect,” Montesinos said.“I started there when I was 14,just merely wanting a job while inhigh school.”

The job turned out to be a pas-sionate and long career choicefor Montesinos. She graduatedfrom Kendall Culinary School witha degree in baking and pastry.

“I developed a love for cakesand baking,” Montesinos said.“I returned back to Continental, where I met my husband, alsoa baker, with 28 years at Conti-nental. And, after many years ofworking as a head cake designerand competing both nationallyand locally in cake competitionsfor the Retail Bakers Association,I decided that I needed to takea leap of faith for my dream and

open up Sweet T’s.”If you pop in the shop, you’re

more than likely to see Montesinosworking feverishly behind thecounter on a custom cake — hertrue passion — or on a tray of de-lectable cupcakes or cake pops.

“We don’t freeze anything andwe don’t even have a freezer tohold products,” Montesinos said.“Everything is baked daily.”

Sweet T’s Bakery & Cake Studiois lovely and bright, with pink andwhite walls and charming chan-deliers. Display cases hold manytraditional and fine baked treats, which are, of course, made fromscratch: coffee cakes, Danishes, pies, Kolacky cookies and cinna-mon rolls. Gourmet cupcakes arealso on the menu: lemon, caramelturtle, red velvet, carrot, sea saltcaramel, chocolate mousse, keylime, raspberry and more.

“I truly love what I do,” Mon-tesinos said.“I absolutely love work-ing and demonstrating cakes in thestore, interacting with the customers, teaching, having kids parties andsharing my love of cakes.”

“I love being a part of ArlingtonHeights because it is such a warmand welcoming city and everyoneis so nice,” she said.

The Wooden SpoonFor an independent feel, check out An-

dersonville’s The Wooden Spoon in Chicago.Trina and Sean Sheridan not only own andoperate the shop but also they live in the com-munity — right above the store.

To say that they are invested is an under-

statement. These affable folks care immenselyabout the quality of gastronomic productsthey sell; they have enlisted the best chefsand instructors to represent their brand.

“My grandfather owned a restaurant andlived above it in Chicago,” Trina said.

Living and working in the community, asher grandfather did, gives Trina a leg up.

“Andersonville wants specialty stores,”Trinasaid.“We have a small-town feel in a big city, and we participate in many community events.”

The Wooden Spoon holds a party nearlyevery night, and these parties are the shop’sbread and butter.

“It’s a great venue to celebrate an an-niversary or go out with a group of friends,”Trina said.“You’re getting a good meal, you’relearning something, and you’re taking some-thing home.”

In a class, participants move around, inter-act with others, contribute to the meal prepa-ration and break bread with other learners.

“It’s an alternative to going out to eat,”said Trina. “It motivates and inspires you.If you’re in a cooking slump, it will get youcooking again.”

What’s the homespun experience like forTrina’s family?

“We have three kids. They do homeworkdownstairs, they know all of the workers, and they are around cooking a lot. It’s apart of their life. Cooking and eating ameal, which is fresh and healthy, is just

what you do,” she said.Clear a date in your schedule; The Wooden
