1.0 SOFTBALL HISTORY IN MALAYSIA

In the early stages, the game was played as a recreational sport. This game was

introduced by American missionaries in 1939 in ACS Kampar, Perak. Since then, several

teams have conducted a series of friendly matches. When the Second World War begins,

the development of softball game was delayed. However, there were Japanese soldiers who

love this game and play it with a tennis ball. In 1960, Mr. Jack Robinson had a softball clinic

in Malaya as an attempt to turn the game. This game is getting in get back later when some

state returns to competition organized softball. Various efforts are in place to further

popularize this game including listing it in the MSSM program. At the end of the 60s, an

initiative has been taken to further popularize the game in the state of Perak, Selangor and

Penang. Then in 1972, representatives from the state of Perak, Penang and Selangor have

held a meeting at the residence of the Chief Minister of Perak to establish Softball

Association of Malaysia (SAM). Dato' Sri Haji Kamaruddin Bin Haji Mohd Isa. Softball

Association of Malaysia (SAM) was registered on 16-03-1974. In August 1973, the First

National Softball Tournament was held in conjunction with Silver Invitational Softball

Tournament in Ipoh, Perak. The tournament was attended by teams from three states

namely, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Successful organization of this tournament from

several states and other organizations were keen to join the (SAM) include the (RAAF). In

October 1976, the first ASEAN Softball Tournament was held in Kuala Lumpur. The

tournament was participated by five teams saw Malaysia gained third place. In 1977,

Malaysia sent softball team for the first time out of the country to join the ASEAN Softball

Tournament in Manila, Philippines. In the same year, the category of women contested for

the first time. At the school level, MSSM has also played an important role in the

development of the sport of softball in Malaysia. In 1968, the first MSSM Softball

Tournament was held in KG PANDAN, Kuala Lumpur. MSSM Silver Softball Championship for

the first time in 1977 in Penang. In the MSSM championship held in KUANTAN in 2005,

competition for ages 15 years and under was introduced. Softball game continues to grow in

all corners of the ground water to date.

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO GAME SOFTBALL

1. Players who play for a game

Each team is allowed 15 players compiled a list of nine key players and six substitutes.

2. Outfielder

The last called outfielder team consisting of 9 players according to their position. All except catcher outfielder must be in the game before the game started. Outfielder who is not in the process of receiving the ball must give way to the base runner. All outfielders are not allowed to prevent base runners to advance to the next base. Outfielder is not allowed to throw any equipment in order to hold the ball that was hit or thrown.

3. Beaters

The team consists of 9 people hitting players take turns hitting. Rotation hit must be in a fixed sequence and cannot be punctuated by the other players. Hitters must get into the whisk box within 10 seconds after the referee called it. If they fail to do so, sentence 1 strike can be given. Each hitter will be given three chances to hit a ball that strike crossing the ball over home plate and between the shoulders and knees hitter. Every hitter right to choose a ball that enters strike zone and leaves the ball outside the zone strike. Hitters not intentionally hit the ball twice in one pic. Hitters are not allowed to change to another box when the pitcher hitter in a state of readiness to perform pitching. Hitters are not allowed to prevent catcher in any way from catching the ball from the pitcher. A hitters are not allowed to step out of the box when the ball hitter. Beaters shall not intentionally obstruct any attempt to shut down outfielder from doing base runner. All hitters including the beater are in a circle waiting for (on-deck circle) must wear helmets.

4. Pitcher

Both feet must be above carafe plate before doing pitching. Before starting the pitch, both hand

pitchers must be removed. Pitcher may take one step forward while releasing the ball. Once the

pitcher ready to pitch, the ball cannot be thrown to any outfielder except catcher. Pitcher is not

allowed to make two or more rounds before or during pitching hand. Pitch pitchers can only start

after the referee signaled the beginning. Pitcher cannot receive a signal above catcher when carafe

plate. Pitcher cannot fold hands that used to pitch or affix any material on the ball during the game.

Resin powders can be used by the carafe under the control of the referee.

5. Catcher

A teenage catcher required to wear face guards, leg guards, throat guards and chest guards before

entering the catcher box. Catcher must enter the box before the game started. Catcher not allowed

to obstructs or interfere with the whisk from the shot. Catcher must return the ball to the pitcher

after each pitch unless there were runners on base or after hitters confirmed dead (out) by the

referee.

6. Runner Bases

All base runners must wear helmets and are not allowed to take it off in the base run except

it off by mistake. If the helmet is removed deliberately, base runners will be declared dead. Base

runners allowed to steals bases as soon as the ball is released from the pitcher with the possibility of

offhand (tag). Base runners must give way or to avoid a clash with the outfielder in the process of

receiving the ball. Base runners are not allowed to obstruct or interfere with outfielder from playing

or throw the ball to another outfielder. Base runners must trample all traversed base sequence first

base, second base, third base and home plate. Whisk runners allowed past first base after step on

and cannot be turned off except going attempt to advance to second base. Runners advanced to

second base and third base must maintain contact with the bases except in situations where the

base out of the proper position. If a base is not on its place of origin, base runners who finished the

1.2 HISTORY SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION OF MALAYSIA

Softball activity in Malaysia began before 1972 when individual States in Malaysia had their

own teams. However on 2nd September, 1972, after the festival of Softball Championship hosted by

the Singapore Softball Association, where by Penang, Perak and Selangor upon invitation,

participated, the Softball Association of Malaysia (SAM) was born. SAM is the sole body representing

the game of Softball in Malaysia. It was established and registered with the Registrar of Societies on

16 March 1974 pioneered by the states of Penang, Perak and Selangor. The pro-tem committee was

headed by the late DATO SRI HAJI KAMARUDDIN BIN HAJI MAT ISA (Chief Minister of Perak) and the

committee included MR. CHONG KONG SENG (Secretary/Treasurer), MR. KOH KIM EOW (Penang),

TUAN HAJI ABDUL GHAFFAR HASHIM (Perak), MR. GERRY SALVADOR (Selangor) and MR. WELFRED

VIAS (Ministry of Sports). SAM at present has ten affiliate members, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Perlis,

Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Terengganu, Melaka, Kedah and Kelantan and two associate

members, Polis Di Raja Malaysia (PDRM) and Majlis Sukan Universiti-Universiti Malaysia (MASUM).

Nevertheless, softball is also played in the states of Negeri Sembilan, particularly in the schools,

Sabah and Sarawak who are yet to register with the Commissioner of Sports. The Malaysia Schools

Sports Council is also an integral part of SAM's membership.

Objective:

1. Form and produce athlete softball that is active in terms of mental and physical through program excellence of national sports

2. Provide sports service that is best quality to athlete, and Malaysian softball management in raise national sports dignity world standard.

2.0 HOW SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION MALAYSIA (SAM) MANAGE SPORT ORGANIZATIONS IN IMPROVE SPORT INDUSTRY TO BE SUCCESFUL

2.1 Introduction Softball Sports In Malaysia

Malaysia softball program has been established and rigorous program since their inception.

Various initiatives have been taken in popularizing the sport in Malaysia. The softballs Malaysia also

have planned a variety of strategies to improve the quality athletes and quality games. In the early

stages, softball sport is not very known in the children, youth and adults in this country, but also not

so popular in the world when compared to other sports such as badminton, football and rugby. They

are often confused with baseball sport and softballs sport maybe the way and the same style of play.

Then it became the responsibility of introducing the sport softball in Malaysia and to give

explanation to citizen about the existence of this softball sports. Softball Malaysia took the early

initiative at grassroots to open softball clinics at primary and secondary levels to expose and instruct

them on how to play softball games and the laws of the game. Softball association also has

forwarded a proposal to the ministry of education Malaysia to make sport of softball as an official

tournament every year for all primary and secondary school level. This tournament held to find new

talent at district and state levels with this of tournament softball team will be able to detect

Malaysia new talent to be absorbed into the player.

2.2 In Term Of Performance

In softball sports should emphasize performance because of the best and beautiful

presentation can make up a game that gives competition to the opponent also eliminate boredom

for the audience. But the effort and discipline needed in every player’s before playing as concerned

about diet, exercise and in terms of mental and physical preparation. Each team requires discipline

and hard work in training, for example, when the softball association Malaysia (SAM) has issued a

notice to send a team of men and a women's team to the SEA GAMES 2011, the coaches and

managers who manage this team has made arrangements to hold an open match at University Putra

Malaysia (UPM) and has made on the sidelines of the match selection SUKAN MALAYSIA (SUKMA) in

June at the UPM. For the coaches involved, they have worked hard for five months in preparation for

the SEA GAMES in Palembang and Jakarta, Indonesia which will be held for 7 days at 11 to 17

November 2011 because it is a crucial period for the coach and the player’s make sure they get

ready before playing, the coach has made a hectic schedule for adequate training for 3 months for

the men's team and women's team. This is because the training is very important for every player’s

to correct the roll technique and shot in the right way. Disciplines that are of concern also in terms

of attendance, time and care training items like a glove, catchers set, bat, base and so on. The

presence of each should be looked into seriously because player’s sport team sport that requires

major player 9 and 8 player’s for savings, a total of 17 for each team. For the discipline, every

player’s be punctual in the morning session begins at 6:30 to 11:30 am while in the afternoon at

about 3:30 to 6:30 pm For every coach, time is important so that the player’s and not waste time

with things other things that time can be spent in a way to make the desert a training, the gym or

jogging. Not only that but the discipline in terms of government training items like catchers set, ball,

bat, helmet and Base requires attention and top priority during training or during matches desert a

program runs, not forgetting the private goods like a glove, batting glove and golf shoes. Each team

is hoping to make the best presentation for the country proud and can increase the direct sports also

able to introduce the sport to the people of Malaysia because the coaches had great confidence in

Malaysia player’s young to be able to create a name in the sport throughout Asia soon.

2.3 Softball Product

THE BALL

The ball is probably the most important piece of equipment used in softball. The ball is round with a circumference of 30.2cm ( 12 inches) and a weight of 166.5g ( 6 oz ). It's also optic yellow in color in color with red stitches to make it easier for the batter to see.

THE BAT

The bat is probably the most fun piece of equipment because everyone loves hitting the ball with it. Bats are usually made of very high grade graphite, carbon, magnesium, ceramic, or some combination or other composite material approved by the International Softball Federation. They can be no longer than 34 inches (86.4 cm) and weigh no more than 38 oz, (1077)

A GLOVE

A glove is used by every fielder in a defensive position. They are made of leather and have a pocket which is the area between the thumb and first finger that allows for the ball to be caught. Gloves vary depending on the position for which they are used. Glove may be worn by any player, but mitts may be used only by the catcher and the 1st base player.

CATCHER’S GEAR

Catcher’s gear is only worn by the catcher and is to protect that player from pitched or batted balls SINCE pitched balls can travel at or near 112 km an hour (70 mph). The catcher’s protective gear includes a mask, helmet, chest protector and shin/leg protectors.

BATTING HELMETS

A battling helmet is used by the batter and all base runners to protect themselves from any stray balls that might be thrown or pitched poorly.

2.3.1 WHAT'S THE OBJECT OF THE GAME

The game of softball is played on a softball field or, "pitch" that includes 3 bases and a home plate arranged in the shape of a diamond:

Softball involves two teams of 9 players - one team on defense and one team on offense.

The object of the game is to get a "runner" on base by hitting a pitched ball and to advance this runner safely around all the bases to home plate.

A runner advances safely by not being touched by a player holding the ball or by getting to the next base before the defense can get the ball to that same base.

This scores your team one "run."

The team with the most runs in seven innings wins the game.

If the score is tied after seven innings, teams continue to play until one of the them scores more runs at the end of any inning thereafter to win. The “tie-breaker” rule is put into effect at the eighth inning.

Each team’s half of the inning (counted when they are on offense) ends where three of its batters have been ruled out. (We talk about “outs” in the “How Do You Play the Game?” Section).

Softball Association of Malaysia (SAM) held an open competition of the National Open at

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang recently to attract the attention of the fans of the sport

who want to show off their talents. Even the parties from other associations have also helped to

raise the sport and looking for new talent to represent Malaysia in the SEA Games that will come

with having such an open game open Melaka, POLIMAS Open, Open UPSI, Pahang and Penang Open.

Competition like this can inspire new talents who want to learn about sports softball and

sportsmanship increase in the sport. Not only that, but the SAM has held courses such as Coaches

Events, Events umpiring and Scorers' Events for the pursuit of knowledge about the sport for

example Coaches Events held in Kuala Lumpur on 15-19 December 2005, the course was held in

partnership between the ISF and U.S. National softball association. Trainer Fast pitch from Asia

Pacific 47 coaches who took part in this course. 18 trainer are from Malaysia, six from the

Philippines, four from Singapore, three from each Chinese-Taipei, Indonesia and Thailand, two each

from Australia, Hong Kong, Iran and New Zealand, 1 each from Japan and Guam. Course was

conducted by M.S K Linda Wells and Mr. John both from the United State Of America underwent 15

hours of instruction Offensive Strategy, Defensive Strategy 10 hours, 5 hours and 5 hours Batting

Practice. They then took the two hour test and those who pass are awarded the Diploma in

International Training College. The next course was held in Kuala Lumpur on 9 to 11September 2002

was umpiring Events, Malaysia requested Softball Association ASA-Asia to conduct national umpire

clinics for referees Malaysia along with hosting the 2nd Asian Women Junior (19 & Under) Softball

Championship in Kuala Lumpur. 12 scorers attend the clinic. SCA Chief Umpire, Mr. Tommy Wang Fu

Shiung was chief conductor of the course and final course of the charges held on the date and place

of the Scorers' Events, Softball Association ASA-Asia Malaysia requested to carry out the national

scoring clinic for Malaysia scorer along with hosting Asian Women Junior 2 (19 & Under) Softball

Championship in Kuala Lumpur. 15 scorers attend the clinic M.S Chan Kun-Ying and Mdm. Kao Te-

Lien from Chinese-Taipei doctor. To provide courses and open competition as this can increase the

softball sport at the international and in the public interest to pursue the sport.

3.0 CONCLUSION

Softball sports have existed in Malaysia country since early 1972.pada sport softball is not as is

known among the people of Malaysia. Malaysia softball associations have played their role in

introducing the sport to the people of Malaysia. Various efforts they have done from the grassroots

level up to international. Various efforts they are doing to find and polish the talents of the players.

many achievements they have obtained in various ever softball championship team under the

auspices they represent. They also make a variety of courses for coaches, staff and players to

improve their performance in this softball field. Addition, various tournaments they have also

organized among university open Putra Malaysia (UPM). Items listed above is a bit of work has been

done by the softball association of Malaysia (SAM).
