The SMC-P softstarter is the first compact softstarter.It is developed in close cooperation with customers toensure that the product solves all the important needsof the customers.The SMC-P softstarter is ideal for any applicationswhere space is limited, but where advanced functionalitystill is required.It is suitable for most of the common applications such aspumps, fans, compressors, conveyor belts and more.

One of the most important features of any electricaldevice is that it is easy to set up and easy to use.The SMC-P softstarter is equipped with an easy-to-usefour sets DIP switch and faceplate have three knobs.

The SMC-P softstarter is not only designed to ensure anexceptional reliability. It has also been equipped withfeatures to ensure that the whole operation is kept reliable.As an example, torque control eliminates water hammering and thereby greatly reduces themechanical stress on pump systems and provides a more reliable operation with lessdowntime.

Knowing what the customer want, it has been possible to design a softstarter that really fulfilsthe needs of the customers, without adding unwanted complexity.This gives excellent value for money and together with the by-pass for energy saving makesthe SMC-P softstarter a very efficient choice.

Modular design with a standard leading wire,overload protection, phase loss, jam,over-temperature and underload protection.

The SMC-P soft start is designed for thefollowing simple applications:Material handling conveyorsBelt-driven machineryFans and pumpsSmall compressorsAutomatic doors and gatesProcess machinery (such as grinders,mixers, and agitators)Filling linesPeople moversAny other application that can benefitfrom stepless reduced voltage starting

The SMC-P soft start is compact andeasy to install. It was designed tomeet IEC 60947-4-1, EN60947-4-2,EN61000-4 and EN50082-2the intern-ationally accepted standard definingsoft starts, and carries the followingagency approvals: CE. Page.9~10

Description

Control three phases of the AC voltagesupplying the motor to limit startingtorque and current.Have motor power ratings of 3 to 350

hp and 500 to 1100A (2.2 to 335 kw),three-phase have a motor voltagerange of 208 to 220V, 380 to 440V,460 to 480, 575V and 660V.

They are equipped with:a potentiometer to set the initial voltageapplied to the motor when starting begins.a potentiometer to set the starting time.a potentiometer to set the stopping time.1 red LED to indicate that soft startpower is on.1 green LED that illuminates asoft starter begins.2 green LED that illumin-ates a start command is given indicatingthat the soft start’s voltage ramp is complete,the internal shorting contactor is closed, andthe motor is up to speed.

Starting and stopping timesThe SMC-P soft start controls the starting and stopping time of the motor by ramping theapplied motor voltage up and down. The starting and stopping voltage ramp times can beadjusted from 1 to 40 seconds and 1 to 60 seconds by means of two potentiometers on thefront of the soft start. Since the actual motor starting and stopping times are dependent onthe level of the applied load, the scale on the front of the soft start is calibrated from A to Erather than from 1 to 40 seconds, with A being the shortest time and E being the longest time.The starting voltage ramp begins at the AC voltage level set by the Initial Voltage adjustment.See the diagram below for more detail. See page 6 for more information about Initial Voltage.

Initial (or starting) voltageThe initial voltage applied to the motor (the level at which the voltage ramp begins) canbe adjusted by a potentiometer on the face of the SMC-P soft start. The initial voltagelevel can be adjusted from approximately 100 to 500% of the AC line voltage. Sincethe resultant motor torque varies in proportion to the square of the applied voltage (see thediagram below), the scale on the front of the SMC-P is calibrated from A to E rather thanfrom 100 to 500%, with A being the lowest level and E being the highest level. A lower settingwill reduce motor current and torque during starting. Set this level to the minimum requiredthat will result in motor rotation immediately after a start command. If no level ofadjustment here starts immediate motor rotation, use the Boost function. See the diagramon page 5 for more detail.

This diagram shows the torque/speed characteristic of a squirrelcage motor in relation to theapplied voltage.The torque varies in proportion tothe squared ratio of the appliedvoltage to the motor’s rated voltageat a fixed frequency.For example, 1/2 voltage results inapproximately 1/4 torque.The gradual increase in the voltageprevents the instantaneous currentpeak on start up.

Boost (kickstart) functionIf the Boost control input is active when a start command is given, full line voltage will beapplied to the motor for the first 1sec of soft start operation.Thereafter, the normal voltage ramp will resume.Use this function to start high inertia loads or applications with a high level of startingfriction. See the diagram on page 5 fig.4 for more detail.
