PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS
This chapter presents the introduction and background of the study, the problems
identified by the researchers and objectives set for the development of Attendance Monitoring
using Biometric Fingerprint Scanning . This chapter also contains the scope and limitation of the
study.
INTRODUCTION
Attendance is a daily time record of numbers of employee present on a particular day at
work, generally defined as a systematic accurate attendance it is a day-to-day obligation of every
employee’s as fullest potential, improvement of job performance through of different duties and
responsibilities for any given position. Monitoring attendance helps in the long term for a
business, as an employer will be able to tell which employees arrive early, which arrive late and
who has the most absences without any valid reason. Discrepancies in employee hourly records
happen all the time for a number of reasons, and if they are not fixed, that employee may have
grounds for legal action, which could in turn lead to penalties and back pay requirements. Thus,
attendance monitoring is a very important process for both the employee and the employer.
The previous approach in which manually taking and maintains the attendance records
was very inconvenient task. Keeping these issues in mind a system is designed to overcome the
problems associated with attendance system. The attendance monitoring system was created and
it changed the way attendances were marked. The attendance monitoring system has made the
lives of teachers and employers easier by making attendance marking procedure a piece of cake.
An automatic attendance management system using biometrics would provide the needed
solution. After having these issues in mind we develop an automatic attendance system which
automates the whole process of taking attendance and maintaining it. An automatic attendance
management system using biometrics would provide the needed solution. It cannot be forged
easily. With the integration and use of biometric technology getting simpler, many institutions
are using down the biometric road to verify the time and attendance of their students and staffs.
Fingerprints are one of the main forms in biometric field which used to identify the
individual and their uniqueness. Fingerprint authentication is one of popular authentication
systems in the world. Due to their consistency and uniqueness it is used widely. There are several
sources available for the collection and their established use. In the past, magnetic card
attendance system was widely used. But, this system has lot of bugs in it. The card may be lost or
damaged. This fingerprint attendance system is highly secure and cannot be forged easily.
Fingerprints are a form of biometric identification which is unique and does not change in one’s
entire lifetime.
Our proposed system uses fingerprint verification technique to automate the attendance
system. It is believed that no two people have identical fingerprint in world, so the fingerprint
verification and identification is most popular way to verify the authenticity or identity of a
person wherever the security is a problematic question. Universality, that means every person
hold the individual characteristics of fingerprint, so it helps to uniquely identify the employees.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Increasing information accuracy and reliability are the two paramount reasons a time and
attendance system is installed in any organization. Because an organization’s workforce is often
its largest expense, impacting production and profitability, inaccurate timekeeping can lead to
costly regulatory compliance missteps, among other pitfalls. On the other hand, it should be
noted that employees also represent an organization’s biggest asset with regard to growth and
profitability. Thus, maintaining accurate and reliable time and attendance information makes
labor management a whole lot more manageable.
Biometrics is an effective method in order to record and monitor time attendance, which
will prove to be very useful for the organization to monitor employees and ensure that not only
will the rate of attendance rise up, but also productivity and positive results in a employees’
overall assessment as well.
Biometric technology offers advanced verification for employees in every industry.
Biometric time clocks, which are used to record employee start and end times, are popular in
organizations where security is an issue, or where employees may falsely record their time
worked. Because biometric systems identify people through physical measurements of unique
human characteristics or behavior, they thwart attempts of time fraud, where one employee
punches for another. Biometric systems do not require easily-lost or stolen badges, or other
identifying objects. The organizational costs of this kind of time theft can be enormous. The
company loses money a few minutes at a time compounded across departments and locations.
Biometrics makes it almost impossible for employees to defraud a time and attendance system.
An appropriate time and attendance system that meets your organization’s needs can help
to eliminate and even prevent many, if not most, of the negative aspects of inaccurate and
unreliable timekeeping. Workforce management integration adds efficiency by easily and
securely sharing data from one part of the organization to other parts without manual reentry of
data and the associated errors that can result.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
A. General Objective
The main objective of the study is to develop and implement an Attendance
Monitoring System Using Biometric Fingerprint Scanning.
B. Specific Objectives
Specifically the study aims to:
1. Design a system for time and attendance monitoring for employees.
2. Create the system as designed using Java as front end and Mysql as
back end.
3. Integrate the system using U.are.U SDK (Biometrics Technology).
4. Test and improve the acceptability of the system
SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The system for attendance monitoring is designed specifically for employees working for
the Office-of-the-Treasury at the Manila City Hall.
The study focused on the development of a software intended for attendance monitoring
system for employees through the integration of Biometric Fingerprint Scanning. Generally, it is
consisted of a computer, biometric fingerprint scanning device specifically, the U.are.U SDK.
The system could generate the official time of entry and official time of exit from work, time in
and time out between breaks, and the number of hours spent in overtime of an employee. The
system provides the functionality of recording the number of lates and absences an employee
makes within a period of time.
There are two users to the system, the administrator and the employee. In terms of the
system administrator, the services provided the administrator, the ability to view the attendance
summary of every official employee logged in the system. The administrator could also add a
new employee that can use the system and remove an employee currently registered in the
system. The administrator also have the ability to notify an employee of his/her current
attendance status. In terms of the employee, the registered employee could view the official time
of log-in upon using the system.
