A team of biologists,anthropologists, economists,and representatives ofindigenous communities

founded the Ministry of theEnvironment in Brazil in 1934when they established theForest Code and the WaterCode intended to preserve

biodiversity throughout theAmazon and its surroundingregions. In turn, they continuedto launch projects in responseto climate change,

deforestation, vehicleemissions, and emissions ofgreenhouse gases throughoutBrazil.

The Amazon Region ProtectedAreas Project was launched bythe Ministry of the Environment in2003. The project aims to setpriority zones throughout theAmazon Rainforest in whichbiodiversity is threatened bydeforestation, carbon emissions,industrialization, and forest fires

ARPA objectives include storinglarge quantities of carbon andkeeping it out of theatmosphere, maintainingsufficient tree cover to preserve

rainfall patterns, and providinglocal communities withalternative resourcemanagement plans

-Established nearly 283,000 km ofprotected areas for the purposeof conservation-Developed 125,000 km ofneglected parks in order to meeteffective managementstandards-Created 89,000 km ofsustainable use reserves to

benefit local communities-Established the TumucamaqueMountains National Park in 2002in the state of Apam, which isthe world's largest tropical forest

national park and the secondlargest national park in the world

-The Amazon Fund wasestablished by the MMA in2008, and aims to raise funds to

prevent and monitordeforestation and promote thesustainable use of forests in theAmazon Biome-The Fund is in charge of themanagement of public forestsand protected areas,environmental monitoring andsurveillance, ecological andeconomic zoning, land useplanning and regulation,

conservation and sustainabilityof biodiversity, and therecovery of deforested regions

-The target audience of thisorganization are activists,environmentalists, and

those interested inpromoting theconservation of theAmazon Biome-The MMA advertises their

projects through publiccampaigning, various formsof social media, and dailynews posts that highlight

the specific objectives ofthe organization

I believe that the goals of theMinistry of the Environment areessential to the preservation ofthe Amazon region; the issuesof deforestation andgreenhouse gas emissions willremain prevalent unless effortsare made to conserve energyand limit activities such as

industrial logging and habitatdestruction. For this reason, Iwould be willing to promote thisorganization and donate toprojects such as the Amazon

Fund to maintain the areas richbiodiversity.

The MMA has already achievedmany of its goals in habitatpreservation, and, for many,these goals have had a life-

changing impact. By promotingbiodiversity, we are betterprepared to faceunpredictable environmentalconditions and continue to

benefit from the sustainable useof biological resources,including climate moderationand the removal of greenhousegases in the atmosphere.
