SWAT

Students Working to Advance Technology (SWAT) is a national program that gets children involved with technology at their school. Socorro supports the SWAT Team in each of the TechPilot schools.

The TechPilot will coordinate the SWAT Team. Students interested in participating in the SWAT team have to go through a job application process: filling out an application, getting letters of recommendation, and sitting through an interview.

Necessary forms to apply for the SWAT team may be downloaded from: http://programs.sisd.net/techpilot/swat.html

Copies of the forms are also included in the Support Documents section.

Students in the program learn "real world" technology skills that will help them in their future studies and endeavors. Some of these valuable skills include:

Incorporating digital movies and pictures into multimedia presentations that can be used in the school's daily announcements.

Helping and mentoring other students with software applications on campus.

Learning web page development. Acquiring basic troubleshooting techniques.

In order for students to be eligible to apply and continue to participate in SWAT, they must:

have passed the TAKS test the previous year (if applicable), maintain passing grades, and demonstrate satisfactory conduct.

Broadcast/Live Announcements

Daily video broadcasts using the campus multimedia system should begin by the second week of school.

In most cases, the SWAT Team will produce and broadcast the school’s daily announcements under the supervision of the TechPilot.

TechPilots must properly train SWAT teams to produce quality video broadcasts.

SWAT teams should be knowledgeable enough to cover broadcasts in the TechPilot’s absence.

If another campus group is given the daily broadcast duty, the TechPilot must coordinate with the group’s sponsor.

TechPilots must work with the TAC to acquire quotes for the hardware, such as audio mixer, video mixer, etc.

TechPilots are encouraged to visit other campuses to view their video broadcasts.

For technical support regarding broadcasting, contact Chad Sarrach at 937-1107.

MANDATORY: TechPilots are responsible for securing all hardware for broadcast.

Broadcast Contest/Awards

In order to promote student produced broadcasts throughout the district, SISD has established the SISD Broadcasts Awards.

The contest is mandatory for all schools in Socorro I.S.D. If the TechPilot is not responsible for the broadcast production, they

are responsible for informing the person in charge of the broadcast at the contest and turning in the required video.

The Department of Instructional Technology will oversee the contest. See the support documents for guidelines and rules.

Broadcast contest award categories: News anchors Sports anchor Weather anchor Special event/feature Principal’s report Interview Set design Graphics/animations

Technology Family Night

TechPilots will be in charge of coordinating a Technology Family Night on their campus on an annual basis. (Target month: January)

Technology Family Night will be scheduled independently of other campus events. (kick-off or culmination to Tech. Month)

Technology Family Night should be arranged to give students and their families the opportunity to work together in a computer friendly environment.

Students will also be given the chance to show their parents just what experts they have become at using the computer.

For students who may not have access to computers in their home, Technology Family Night gives those students and their families a hands-on opportunity to showcase their work.

It is highly encouraged to seek the help of teachers who have used technology effectively in their class to assist with the Technology Family Night.

Classroom Policies

Room Arrangement-Hardware

Do students have easy access to computers? All classroom computers need to be placed in an area that is conducive to learning.

All cabling and wiring for classroom computers needs to meet all safety regulations. No wires/cables may be lying freely on the floor. They must be secured or covered with appropriate cord covers.

Teachers have easy access to computers not only for administrative use, but for presenting, and modeling lessons.

Computer Software

Make sure that responsible use guidelines and software license

agreements are followed.

Managing Classroom Computers Computer activities should provide students opportunities for

collaborative learning. Students can rotate through the computer(s) when used as learning

stations to target key content areas. Computers may also be used to reinforce or remediate skills (drill

and practice). This is an excellent way to incorporate district programs such as Rosetta Stone.

Teachers are responsible for monitoring computer and printer use.

Computer Lab Rules

Each TechPilot will determine the rules and procedures to be followed by students and teachers in the computer labs.

These rules and procedures will be presented to students and teachers using PowerPoint at the beginning of the year.

All classes must review the rules and procedures PowerPoint before using the computer labs for any purpose.

Rules and procedures should be prominently posted in the computer labs.

If there are any other areas with computers that are accessible to students, rules and procedures for these areas should also be addressed and visibly posted.

Establishing Network Rights

Every student and employee in SISD is given a personal username and password for accessing network resources (internet/intranet, e-mail, etc…) The required forms can be downloaded at the following site: http://www.sisd.net/about/usesisdnet.php?home

The Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) outlines the rules that the user will agree to follow when using district network resources.

The Agreement form needs to be completely filled out before it can be submitted.

Students should also be given the Letter to Parents/Guardians, which gives parents further guidelines for assisting with making their children responsible users of technology.

If parents deny, the TechPilot should call to clarify any issues that may exist. If necessary, the administration may get involved.
