CRIME AGAINST WOMEN Violence against women and girls is a problem ofpandemic proportions. At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime with the abuser usually someone known to her. Violence against women can fit into several broad categories. These include violence carried out by "individuals" as well as "states". Some of the forms of violence perpetrated by individuals arerape;domestic violence;sexual harassment; coercive use of contraceptives;female infanticide;prenatal sex selection; obstetric violence andmob violence; as well as harmful customary.

CURRENT SITUATION OF WOMEN IN DIFFERENT SECTORWomen empowerment and bringing women in the mainstream of development is one of the priority agenda for Bangladesh which is signatory of the Convention for Elimination of all Sorts of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and committed to achieve gender equality and equity in every arena of socio-economic activities. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have also emphasized on the equal opportunity for women in every sphere of life. To ensure equal participation of women in economic development process, it is urgently needed to know their current participation status in different sectors of the economy.

Valentina Tereshkova

Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova (born 6 March 1937) is a retired Russiancosmonautand politician. She is the first woman to have flown inspace, having been selected from more than four hundred applicants and five finalists to pilotVostok 6on 16 June 1963. She completed 48 orbits of the Earth in her three days in space. In order to join the Cosmonaut Corps, Tereshkova was honorarily inducted into theSoviet Air Forceand thus she also became the first civilian to fly in space.

Malala Yousafzai

Malala Yousafzai(born 12 July 1997)is a Pakistani activist forfemale educationand the youngest-everNobel Prizelaureate.She is known mainly for human rights advocacy foreducation and forwomenin her nativeSwat Valley in theKhyber Pakhtunkhwaprovince of northwest Pakistan, where the localTalibanhad at timesbanned girls from attending school. Yousafzai's advocacy has since grown into an international movement.

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa(26 August 1910 5 September 1997) also known asBlessed Teresa of Calcutta, Mother Teresa founded theMissionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholicreligious congregation, which in 2012 consisted of over 4,500 sisters and was active in 133 countries. They run hospices and homes for people withHIV/AIDS,leprosyandtuberculosis;soup kitchens; dispensaries and mobile clinics; children's and family counselling programmes;orphanages; and schools. Members must adhere to the vows ofchastity, poverty, and obedience, as well as a fourth vow, to give "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor".

Begum Rokeya

Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, commonly known asBegum Rokeya(9 December 1880 9 December 1932), was aBengali writer, thinker, educationist, social activist, and advocate ofwomen's right. Considered the pioneer feminist of Bengal,she wrote novels, poems, short stories, science fiction, satires, treatises, and essays.In her writings, she advocated that both men and women should be treated equally as rational beings, and the lack of education is the main reason of women's lagging behind. Her major works includeAbarodhbasini, a spirited attack on the extreme forms of purdah that endangered women's lives and thoughts;Sultana's Dream, a science fiction novella set in a place called Lady Land, a world ruled by women;Padmarag("Essence of the Lotus", 1924), another feminist utopian novel;Motichur, collection of essays in two volumes.

Khadja bint Khuwaylid

KhadijahorKhadja bint Khuwaylid(Arabic: orKhadja al-Kubra(Khadija the Great c. 555 or 567 620 CE) was thefirst wifeof theIslamic prophetMuhammad. She is commonly regarded byMuslimsas the "Mother of the Believers", and was the first person to convert to Islam.

INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAYInternational Women's Day(IWD), originally calledInternational Working Women's Day. In 1914 International Women's Day was held onMarch 8, possibly because that day was a Sunday, and now it is always held onMarch 8in all countries. The1914 observance of the Day in Germany was dedicated to women's right to vote, which German women did not win until1918. InternationalWomen's Dayis aworldwide eventthatcelebrates women's achievements

from the political to the social while calling for gender equality. It has been observed since the early 1900s and is now recognised each year on March 8.
