Electromagnetic Compatibility Society
Society has a very good, detailed Strategic Plan – SRC recommends development of an Operational Plan
Follows a thoughtful process for event technical co-sponsorshipPuts serious focus on education, e.g., runs successful “Global EMC University Program”
– Should consider possibility of expanding to electronic disseminationFinancially sound
– SRC recommends EMCS identify initiatives to spend some of Society’s reserves
Globalization– Exhibitor issues tie flagship conference to North America– EMCS supports active worldwide chapter program, but has difficulties
identifying sufficient volunteers from outside the US
EMC summary response
– EMCS started working on an Operational Plan to implement its strategy during its strategic planning meeting held in March 2011
– During its March BoD meeting, EMCS approved several new initiatives
Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society
EMBS has a crisply written FOI and ongoing strategic planning activities– Sets a solid foundation for accommodating new technologies in a rapidly evolving field,
which is very active outside IEEEMembership numbers continues to grow (currently in top 1/3 at ~9k)
– Excellent GOLD member websitePublications
– Nine publications with no apparent process problems– Experimenting with an open access publication model
Conferences– Excellent manual for conference organizers– Recently started new co-sponsored IEEE/AMA Medical Technology Conference
Education– Revitalizing Distinguished Lecturer program, also utilizing ExpertNow modules, IEEE.tv
videos, workshops/tutorials at conferences, and CME credits at specific conferencesFinancially sound
SRC recommends EMBS
– Increase its role in the proposed IEEE Life Sciences Initiative
– Consider expanding its target market for publications outside of the traditional EE-based IEEE Xplore community
– Continue developing web-accessed educational material
Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society
EMBS response
– EMBS is already playing an active leadership role in the Life Science Initiative
via volunteer participation, AdCom support, and by including LSI in EMBS’s strategic plan
– EMBS will explore effective ways to expand the target market of its publications outside the traditional EE-based Xplore community
Will work with IEEE Marketing and Sales to develop and implement a business plan to sell to the bio and medical communities
– Redesigning the EMBS website and using the website to develop educational material have been a priority action item.
Currently focused on developing more web-based educational material for industrial members, particularly for the pharma market
Vehicular Technology Society
Conferences, publications and educational activities in reasonable shape– SRC encourages VTS to continue work already underway to address various
issues (e.g., magazine submissions and Distinguished Lecturer Program)
SRC recommends VTS undertake targeted strategic planning to explore updating its scope of activities beyond its current strong communications focus
VTS has good pipeline of volunteer leaders
Financially sound
VTS response
– Already focusing on many of the areas called out by SRC
– Will consider updating our FOI based on the web site, although will maintain primary focus on providing high quality member
