WHAT IS IT?Garbage problem has greatly increased intoday’s material world and has become amajor threat to the environment. Garbage isoften seen being dumped in the open. Suchmethods of disposal lead to health problemsfor people living in the vicinity. We are oftentold that the first step to reduce the amountof garbage is to segregate it at source. Butmost people are lazy to do so. Hence, wemade our project TThhrroowwbbiinn PPrroo.. It is a smartdustbin that segregates dry and wet waste.To all the lazy people out there, say hello to Throwbin Pro.

HOW WE WENT ABOUT IT* We designed a dustbin with twosub-containers, one for dry wasteand one for wet waste. * We used an Arduino Uno board,water level sensor, ultrasonic sen-sor, servo motor, bread-board andlots of jumper wires. * We wrote a code in which everytime motion is detected towards thebin, the trash that falls on the waterlevel sensor causes the servo motor to rotate. This enablesthe trash to be segregated. * The code was written in Arduino Ide using C++ language.

Avoid board year blues I maintain a time-table which has a ‘cheat

day.’ I also believe in moderation. After a rig-orous study session, I watch a few episodesof my favourite show to cheer myself.

I reward myself. For instance, after finish-ing a portion of my syllabus, I watch an episode of myfavourite TV show or go out for a movie. I believeabandoning your hobby or trying to quit social mediawill only make them all the more tempting.

Since we have regular periodicalsand exhaustive worksheets, a study plan

automatically falls into place. But I plan to doplenty of practice papers and previ-ous years Board papers thoroughly.

WORKING OF THE MODEL When the trash is thrown through theopening at the top of the dustbin, the ultra-sonic sensor detects motion of the hand andsignals the water level sensor to start. Thetrash falls through the opening on to thewater level sensor.

The water level sensor is placed on acardboard and is connected to the servomotor, which is attached to the cardboard. If the sensor detects the presence of mois-ture, the servo motor rotates left, causingthe cardboard to do the same while thetrash slides off into the left compartment,which is the wet waste compartment.

Similarly, if water is not detected, theservo motor and the cardboard turn right,making the trash slide into the right com-partment, the dry waste compartment.
