best friendsThey are con-men who
dream of being rich They find a map leading
to the City of Gold, El Dorado
They arrive and call themselves “gods” for the riches Miguel Tulio
The Road to El DoradoTulio is a mean, selfish,
control freakMiguel is a happy, kind,
positive guyTulio wants to lay low and
take all of the goldMiguel wants to enjoy the
city and it’s people.
~Connection~
ConnectionTulio has a self-fulfilling
prophecy that he will be extremely rich one day.
Tulio uses behavioral expectation confirmation to make people do what he wants.
ConnectionTulio’s self-fulfilling prophecy:
acts as if he is already rich when he is not
expects everyone to follow his wishesthinks he can call all the shotstries to control everyone around himacts as if he is a king
ConnectionTulio’s use of behavioral
expectation confirmation:acting superior makes
people bow to himacting like he’s rich makes
people treat him like a kingacting knowledgeable
makes people trust him, giving him control
acting as a dictator makes people follow his commands
ConnectionThe people of El Dorado do everything Tulio tells them.Tulio says “being worshiped is a breeze” and that he’s got “El
Dorado on [his] plate.”Tulio tells Miguel “Look, change of plans. We have to grab
what we can and go,” meaning take El Dorado’s gold when he knows that Miguel loves that city and doesn’t want to leave.
My TakeThe movie makers did a great job of showing real life
psychology in a fiction film. They made it clear that Tulio struggles with his self-fulfilling prophecy, and this leads to his use of behavioral expectation confirmation.
The fact that Tulio has such a strong self-fulfilling prophecy sends him and Miguel on the great adventure shown in the film.
