Since the beginning of my term as
Commodore, we, the officers and
members of the BOG have been
looking for ideas to increase
utilization of the club. Increased
utilization equals increased revenue.
Well, I am pleased to announce that we are currently
negotiating with the University of Delaware Sailing Club
to move their base of operation to NERYC. This
cooperative agreement is a win/win situation for both the
UD and the NERYC. During the Fall and Spring Sailing
seasons, the UD students will have a first class marina to
practice at Monday through Friday, and an excellent
venue to host their 3 regattas during the year. This also
provides our club with unprecedented exposure and
publicity. In addition to the utilization by the Sailing club,
which numbers from 50 – 80 students per year, the 3
regattas I mentioned will bring in visiting schools, faculty,
friends and parents to visit our club. I am very excited
about this cooperative venture and ask for all members
support as we get things organized. I would like to thank
Steven Stanhope for suggesting this possibility at my last
“Ask the Commodore” meeting, and also for taking the
initiative to get things rolling. Over the past three weeks I
have met several times with various members of the
Sailing Club, including their current Commodore, Bryan
Wittington, who should be familiar to many of you. I will
keep you updated as to our progress. We are aiming to
have everything in place and ready to go by August 1st.
.
COMMODORE’S REPORT Mark your calendars for Friday, July 13 for a
combined Birthday Night, and Past Commodore, New
Member dinner. In an effort to contain costs, it was
decided to combine these two events to save on
entertainment and manpower expenses. Invitations
will be going out to our Past Commodores and to this
years new members, however everyone is invited and
encouraged to attend. There will be a buffet dinner,
menu and price are TBD.
On Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, Lady Gloria
and I joined a number of other club members at
Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Marina for the clubs
Holiday cruise. The sky was slightly cloudy but the
company, conversation, and merriment was as bright
as a ray of sunshine. When Gloria and I left, the party
showed no signs of ending soon, and by all reports, a
good time was had by all!
Remember that Friday, June 8th is our monthly
Birthday, Anniversary, New Member celebration.
Come on down to the club, have a drink and a bite to
eat, and help us celebrate with those souls lucky
enough to get a free drink that evening.
That’s all for this month. Be safe out there on the bay.
Wear your life jackets and boat responsibly. Contact
me directly with any questions, comments or
suggestions.

Our Opening Day weekend at NERYC
was a great start to the season. We
kicked off with a great Margaritaville Party on Friday night dancing to the
tunes of DJ Kevin. The Burgee Lounge
was jam-packed, with stories getting
better as the night went on. The weather cooperated Saturday for set-up, sail racing, and our ceremony. Many
thanks to our members who donated food for the pre-
ceremony feast. The food went unbelievably fast, which is a compliment to our NERYC “chefs”.
For our ceremony, we had many visiting clubs participate as
well as members. Joe Reynolds, as our IPC and MC for the ceremony, and Russ Zehnacker as our Commodore, did a
nice job. Laura Reynolds led us patriotically through song,
and John Sergeant covered the invocation with his radio voice. Member Tom Williams was kind enough to donate
his musical skills during the pre-ceremony and before the
Kentucky Derby began. Jan & John Sergeant kept it lively as the Derby Day party & the Hat Contest. What an exciting
finish to the race with “I’ll have another” winning.
The opening day booklet was a huge success in that we were able to attract a solid number of local business ads in
addition to our member ads. Special thanks to Suzanne
Braun who raised ad money to pay for the weekend activities, the Baskets of Cheer, and organizing our
Margaritaville Party. Also, a big thanks to everyone else
who helped out with our Opening Day weekend in official or unofficial roles. Your help is appreciated, and I will not
be able to cover everyone who helped out. Ceil Keenan did
a great job welcoming our guests, Darlene Hamlin & Tom
Herman organized the lineup, April Conway had the restaurant staff busy serving all, Jenn Lotter snapped
pictures, Gil Louw blasted the cannon, and even Charles
Paris got in on the action by replacing a toilet valve in the Ladies Room before the Saturday afternoon activities
started. Another reminder that there is a steady list of
ongoing maintenance required to keep the club functioning
properly, and Charles does a great job keeping up with the opportunities. For those who worked on the gardens, they
looked great, and thanks to Steve Somers for leading the
efforts.
On Sunday morning, some of our members stopped in to
enjoy a breakfast cooked by V/C Hogan and Cindy Paris, who was flipping pancakes. Lady Karen & I
received very good feedback about Opening Day
weekend, and it is because we have a great membership who
work together and utilize their talents.
This weekend, Lady Karen and I had the pleasure of joining Fleet Captain Ginny Somers and Steve and other members on
a cruise to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Marina for
Memorial Day weekend. Commodore Russ Zehnacker and
Lady Gloria made it down for one of our Happy Hours, and Member Captain Bob Gamble provided some nice night cruis-
es of the Inner Harbor.
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or recom-
mendations, let me know.

FROM THE REAR
FROM THE FLEET
The Club cruise to Baltimore
Inner Harbor over the Memorial Day weekend was one of the
best! We had eight boats and 22 people
attended our two parties. Commodore Russ and Lady Gloria joined us Saturday afternoon and
evening. It may have been a first for a NERYC cruise…
sailboats out numbered power boats 3-1!!! Bob Gamble delighted us all with a cruise of the Inner Harbor Sunday night
on his beautiful catamaran Silver Star. Vivian Molloy thought
the party theme was pirates…ask her why she fell for that!
If you have not been on a club cruise, ever or recently, how can
we entice you to join us? I welcome members’ comments.
Our mid-summer cruise is June 30 and July 1 to Worton Creek
Marina. The marina has a pool and picnic area which we have
reserved for our usual “social gathering” on Saturday evening. Cruise details can be found in the “Fleet Captain’s Cruise
Schedule” booklet at the club or on the website.
Plans for the July 3 picnic and fireworks, at the club picnic grounds, are progressing. Michael Favinger, guitar
player/singer will be entertaining us with music both
before and after the fireworks.
Be sure to keep your schedule free for our NERYC July 3rd
Dock Party. It will be a fabulous family time, with music, food,
friends and fireworks. Everyone is welcome – this is one of the best events at the club every year.
We'll be gathering in the picnic grounds around 5:00pm to kick things off. Our Junior Sailors will be selling hamburgers and
hot dogs, and we'll be asking everyone to bring a side dish,
salad or dessert to share. As dusk approaches, we'll move things out along "A" dock and enjoy the wonderful aerial
fireworks show courtesy of the town of North East.
As you probably know by now a policy has been approved by the BOG to have the Commodore’s Dining Room
open during the day on Saturdays and Sundays. There must be
a member volunteer at the club on those days, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (or until the restaurant staff arrives). This will
only work if we have volunteers…the club will not be open if
there is not a responsible member-volunteer on duty. A sign up schedule is posted inside the front door, or you can call me
or email me. Half days are acceptable.

Welcome to the 2012 boating season!
The Shake Down Cruise was a big hit.
We had a great time in Havre de Grace
with Bruce and Barbi Taylor hosting
our happy hour. Great food, drinks and friends. A big
thank you goes out to them.
Opening Day Ceremonies made it official, NERYC is
open for fun.
The sail racers have had a couple of races put behind
them and the next race is June 2nd, Spring Series 4.
People are always looking for crew so don’t be afraid to
jump and experience the competition.
As I write this on Memorial Day weekend, I’m humbled
by the sacrifices others have made for all of us. While
we enjoy this weekend, please remember those who
have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.
Lastly, remember that our NERYC Invitational Race is
being held June 9th. Sharlene Wilkins and Rick Hanson
should be contacted if you’re interested in entering your
boat to race, would like to buy T-shirts or would like to
crew. They are in the know regarding sail racing and
willing to help you have fun. Novice and experienced
sailors are welcome.

WOW – what an exciting time to be
involved in sailing around North East
River Yacht Club. We have our spring
sail race series gearing up for our 4th
race. We are a few weeks away from a
record breaking junior sail program starting its first week
of camp. We have received several cash and boat dona-
tions for the
junior program that has allowed us to upgrade our fleet.
The latest donation a 17 foot day sailor will allow us to
begin to offer adult lessons and provide a decent boat for
club members to take out on their own. The BOG recently
approved the University of Delaware sailing team to use
NERYC as a home port. Thursday night racing is about
to start up. The NERYC invitational sailing regatta and
pig roast is a week away. The list is just too long to name
all the activities.
You might ask why NERYC attracts all of this activity.
The answer is twofold; our location is ideal and our
members. With a location on sheltered waters it makes
for great recreational sailing and our buildings, grounds
and docks are the best on the northern bay. It is the
members and the hours they dedicate to organize and
coordinate that make all these activities work. From the
BOG support down to the endless hours Mike Wagner
and Sharlene Wilkins put into the program. I cannot
thank them enough. We are still in need of a few more
volunteers to help out with various aspects of the
program. We could use a few parents to help put with
organizing events for the kids and members with boats to
help out with race committee support. Give me a call if
you have any interest.
The next big event up for the sail program is the NERYC
Invitational on June 9th. We expect to have close to 40
entries for the race this year and well over a 100 people
for the pig roast. The pig roast is open to all members sail
or power. If you are interested, please send Sharlene or I
an email with a head count.
I will see everyone at the club and if you have any
questions, are interested in crewing or just getting
involved please let me know.

“The Club had its inaugural
meeting on Sunday, May 2, 2012”
– sounds very grand, doesn’t it!
In fact, six hardy souls – Bill Johnston,
Ceil and Frank Keenan, Bob (Frank’s
brother-in-law), David Ferguson and (eventually, but better
late than never!) Van Downing – met at Lums Pond State
Park, DE with Ryan and John from Eastern Mountain
Sports (EMS) who had brought with them 6 kayaks for us
to try out. This was the first time in kayaks for both Bill
and Van and I have to say that Bill was the more serious
student of the two, trying all 6 kayaks. Van tried one, going
across the pond and back, but really enjoyed her
conversation with, and personal instruction from, John!
The rest of us spent the 1½ hour session trying different
boats and generally getting used to kayaking again after a
winter’s lay-off. We had a great time.
The EMS guys went out of their way to share their
knowledge of kayak safety, paddling techniques and the
pros and cons of different kayaks. In fact, all the employees
of the Newark, DE have been very helpful since my first
approach to them about possibly putting on a kayak demo
for our Club. We enjoyed working with them.
The kayakers will meet as and when the mood moves us,
mostly on Sunday mornings (to accommodate the sail boat
racers with kayaks), and launching from the Club grounds
– at least until we get a feel for the experience and
ambition within the group. We keep in touch by email.
Anyone interested in joining us should contact Frank
Keenan or me. As we don’t have spare kayaks, anyone
interested in trying the sport should consider renting a
kayak.
