But there have been Wrong Turns....
Some teachers view social media tools as a distraction from the classroom learning process.
Barriers to Adoption?

Some teachers are concerned that student dependence on social media means that they are not developing skills to express themselves in social and professional situations.
Dependence?

Incidences of bullying and cheating are magnified through social media and need to be monitored to protect the educational community.
Misuse?

As Well as Clever Uses...

Policies and Legal Issues
Some students use the tools in ways that pit their First Amendment rights against their responsibilities as students in brick-and-mortar schools.
Social media is getting a bad rap..

Restrictive policies limit student access to Web 2.0 tools because of filter requirements and the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
Obstacles and Constraints

Schools that do not filter are not eligible for eRate funding, and might find themselves open to liability issues.
No Filter = No Funding

Educators might use new media to enrich the classroom, but there are also accounts of grave student misconduct.
Cyberbullying

In the Prince George School District, the board is considering a policy that would provide guidelines for the “use and creation” of materials developed by employees and students. Any lessons developed by teachers during the school day using school equipment/software belonged to the school. The board expanded this to include work created for school by teachers on their own time, equipment and software, also belonged to school.
Stifling Creativity?

Educators need to develop an effective policy of integrating social networking into the classroom.
• Social Media is not going away
• When Kids are engaged they learn better
• Safe Social Media Tools are available and for free
• Replace Online procrastination with social education
• Social Media encourages collaboration
