Who We Are:• Adelaide Bike Kitchen (ABK) provides an open space where you

can learn to fix your bicycle.• ABK began as a grass roots community organisation, running off

donations of time and resources. In our current capacity we are limited in what we can achieve for you – our community!

“My name is Cara Archer, a volunteer and committee member of Adelaide Bike Kitchen. My first experience of ABK was as a student, needing a new bike. Walking into the Bike Kitchen knowing nothing about bikes; I walked out not only with a bike that I had managed to fix up thanks to volunteers, but also a connection to an amazing community of people, only too willing to share their knowledge and love for bikes. I’d caught the bike bug, going on to become a volunteer and share this new skill and passion with others. Now with your help, we have the opportunity to spread this amazing bike experience even further.”

OUR MISSION & VISION:• To bring creative, ethical and sustainable clothing to the mainstream

fashion market through the employment of women from refugee backgrounds.

• Every woman has dreams and desires, for themselves and their families, but not every woman has equal opportunity to pursue these. We work to see women from refugee backgrounds empowered through employment, with further skills and training, transition into the mainstream workforce and/or educational pathways in Australia.

• As a collective of women from many different countries, we learn from one another’s cultures, creativity, passions, and knowledge and we support each other through the challenges of life.

• As an organisation we are also committed to sustainability. We want to help educate consumers about the environmental degradation of fast-fashion and overconsumption, and inspire them to choose sustainable and ethical alternatives.

Our commitment includes an overarching understanding of sustainability:• Living within the limits of what the environment can provide• Understanding the interconnections between economy,

society and the environment• The equal distribution of resources and opportunities to all

members of society• Through implementation of this policy, we intend to maximise

the positive environmental, social and economic legacies of our activities and to minimize any negative impacts. To achieve this, sustainability considerations are given equal importance to logistical, creative and financial aspects of our event planning and business practices.

Our Purpose: • Harvest Fair was born out of the need to take action to achieve gender

equality in Australia. The gender pay gap in Australia remains at over 15% and has only reduced by 2% in the last decade. We believe that this persistent pay gap is the result of a systemic issue which often doesn’t allow women the flexibility to balance between career aspirations and family values. When forced to choose, women will often choose family. This is not acceptable. We can do something about this!

• There are many factors which contribute to gender inequality, but we believe that one response must be to create equitable employment opportunities and conditions for women which empowers women and aligns with their core values to get more women into, and thriving, in our workforce.

• Harvest Fair explores this equitable employment concept by offering flexible employment and skills development opportunities. We will work 1-1 with these women to identify their goals (which may be unrelated to the food industry) and assist them to pursue those goals through training and resources, and we will connect them to networks that they might not have had access to otherwise.
