2. The Social-Cognitive Perspective The Person The Situation The Interaction 3. Albert Bandura Bandura (1986, 2001, 2005) believes that personality is the result of an interaction that takes place between a person and their social context. 4. The Person-Situation Controversy Trait theorists argue that behaviors from a situation may be different, but average behavior remains the same. 5. Behavior Behavior emerges from an interplay of external and internal influences. 6. Assessing Behavior in Situations Social-cognitive psychologists observe people in realistic and simulated situations because they find that it is the best way to predict the behavior of others in similar situations. 7. The Interaction Reciprocal determinism- the interacting influences of behavior, internal personal factors, and environment. Social-cognitive theorist explores the interaction among the three sets of influences Different people choose different environments. Our personalities shape how we react to events. Our personalities shape situations. The school you attend and the music you listen to are partly based on your dispositions. Anxious people react to situations differently than relaxed people. How we view and treat people influences how they treat us.
