Unlike American Football, Soccer players have to have a strong endurance because

there are two halves of forty-five minutes of game time. If the score is tied at the end of

soccer there is a penalty shoot out where each team gets five shots to score a goal from

10 yards away. The only person who can stop the ball from entering the goal is the

goalie. The team with the most goals after this wins. The object of Soccer and American

Football is the same: try to score as many points as you can to win. The main difference

is that Soccer is a constant game whereas American Football is game that stops very

often.

In Soccer there are four types of players. The first type of player is called a

forward. The forward’s job is to score a goal; therefore they’re on the opposite side of

the field. The next player is called a defender. The defenders job is to defend the goal

from the opposite teams forwards by staying on their own side of the field. The next

player is called the mid-fielder. Their job is either to assist the forwards and shoot a goal

or help defend against the opposite teams forwards and mid-fielders. The last type of

player in my opinion is the most important player. They are the goalkeeper also known

as a goalie. The goalie protects the goal from the opposing player’s ball trying to enter

the goal. Goalies need to have a certain degree of physical and mental skill to play this

position. In Soccer it is essential to be physically fit because everyone is constantly

running all over the field, unlike its American counterpart.

American Football players each have their own special skills. Unlike Soccer,

American Football has more than four positions. In American Football there are three

parts to a team: offense, defense, and special teams. The offense consists of the

quarterback, running back, fullback, receivers, tight end, and offensive line. The

quarterback is like the goalie, he is one of the most important people in the game. He

has to throw the ball to a receiver or tight end or pass the ball to a running back. The

receivers catch the balls and the running backs or fullbacks run the ball to the end zone

which is just like what the forwards do. The tight ends can catch the ball or help defend

the quarterback, so the tight end is like the Soccer mid-fielder. The offensive line is like

the Soccer players that are trying to protect the most important player. The difference is

the defense of American Football. In the defense there is a defensive line, safety, and

defensive backs. The special teams are like the players that do the Soccer penalty

shoot out. Just as the Soccer players train for a shoot out to get a goal, the special

teams’ trains to always get a field goal. The overall difference is that American Football

players are more atoned for one skill whereas Soccer players have to be skillful in all

areas.

The equipment used in Soccer is different than American Football. In Soccer the

typical equipment used are goals and a soccer ball which is stereotypically black and

white. A typical Soccer player wears shin guards, long socks, shorts, cleats, and a

jersey. The only exception for a jersey is a long-sleeve shirt for the goalies. In American

Football the similarities are the jerseys, socks, and cleats. The differences are that

American Football players wear padding that covers the torso and helmets for safety

and the ball is more oval shaped.

The popularity of soccer and football has a huge impact over the world. I believe

the popularity of both these sports is due to their supportive fans. Soccer fans treat the

game with pride and honor; they will defend the game by putting their life on the line.

For example, when the popular team Manchester lost their match against Birmingham,

Manchester fans started to go wild and started to charge down from the huge stadium.

The stands started to collapse as the stampede grew and over 40 people were killed.

This shows how the fans expressed their rage over the loss. Soccer fans in general are

far more violent than any American Football fan. The Soccer fans bring flags and wave

them rapidly to stimulate support along with the cheers. Football fans on the other hand

are very practical. They brave the rain and paint their chests to support their teams. In

football, fans bring signs to support their team. The most common sign is a sign

representing defense; it has a giant letter D and a cut out of a fence. A tradition that

happens at most American Football games is a thing called tailgating. Tailgating is

basically setting up a truck in the parking lot of a game and barbequing and hanging out

with your friends.
