2007 USF MeN'S SOCCer PreVIeW• USF ADDS YOUTH TO exPerIeNCeD SQUAD •

Three years ago, the University of San Francisco surprised everyone in NCAA soccer by winning the always tough West Coast Conference and once again emerging as a national soccer power.

The Dons proved it was no fluke when they captured the league title in 2005 and last season again jumped into the top-10 for the first time in more than a decade en route to their third straight NCAA berth.

As the 2007 season approaches, USF head coach Erik Visser knows the team is up to another challenge.

“The proof of success in almost anything is to maintain it,” Visser said. “This year we need to start passing the torch to a new group of play-ers, with our upperclassmen showing the way. We have had the kind of recruiting season that will allow it to happen.

“We are blessed with a great group of seniors, starting with Rob Val-entino, whom I consider to be the best player in the nation. Rob combines a high level of talent with determination and versatility. I think that he could be an All-American playing defense, midfield or up front. It is rare to have a player with that type of talent.”

The Dons will be challenged with another difficult schedule, with pre-conference games against powers UCLA, California, New Mexico, Vermont, Alabama A&M, San Jose State and Stanford. This will prepare them for an always competitive West Coast Conference slate, where they will face additional ranked teams featuring All-American players.

“There are no gimmies on this schedule, but it should prepare us for the type of competition that we will face in postseason play,” added Visser. “It will also be a treat for our fans as we play 12 great home games.”

• GOAlKeePerS •

After spending much of 2006 as an understudy for second team all-WCC goalkeeper Geremy Uhl, it is time for junior Eric Conner to earn the starting goalkeeper slot. Conner transferred to USF from UCLA last season and watched Uhl play 19 of the 20 contests, playing just once himself. “Eric is an excellent ‘keeper,” said Visser, “and now he will have a chance to prove himself.”

He will be challenged by 6-5 Cal Poly senior transfer Jeremy Coupe, and standout freshman Bryce Boyd. Coupe started two games for the Mustangs last season. Returner Jeff Leles will provide additional depth at the position.

• DeFeNDerS •

USF’s defense, a strongpoint of the team in recent years, should stay stronger than ever despite losing star Kevin Long and others. Last season USF led the WCC in goals against average for the second straight time.

“The combination of Valentino and fellow senior Chris Rodd, a first team all-WCC selection, in the middle is as good a pairing as you will find in collegiate soccer,” says Visser proudly.

Kyle Schlumpf also returns for his junior year after gaining significant experience last season.

Coach Visser recruited four players who have the ability to see action right away.

Helping to solidify the defense is University of Maryland transfer Jus-tin Kendro, who has the ability to start at either central or outside back.

Two freshman that are expected to challenge for starting berths are Justin Warren from Texas and Victor Cortez from local Miramonte High School.

Young defenders who are projected to challenge for playing time are freshmen Derrick Mazariego and Bill Van Vleet.

• MIDFIelDerS •

USF’s midfield is the unit with the most playing experience on the team.

The Dons return three seniors including All-American candidate Bran-don McDonald, returning leading scorer Ardalan Attar, and the versatile Daniel DeGeer. The Dons also have a future star in sophomore Jesse Henderson.

Brandon is an intimidating force in the midfield, both attacking and defending. He possesses a shot capable of scoring from anywhere on

Senior D Rob Valentino.

the pitch. Attar, a junior college All-American scored five goals, includ-ing two game-winners in his first season in Green and Gold. DeGeer has improved each year at USF and before his injury last season was one of USF’s hottest players.

Also expected to see action is redshirt freshman Daniel O’Donnell and freshman Andrew Cota.

• FOrWArDS •

Returning up front are senior Jordan Keyes and sophomore Conor Chinn, who have shown their abilities at USF. Keyes, who is a speedy attacker is coming off a great spring season, while Chinn showed his stuff as a newcomer last year when he scored four goals and was named to the All-West Coast Conference freshman team.

“We are very pleased with the recruiting class that we have brought in this season to boost the frontline,” said Visser.

The Dons hope to fill the void left by departed senior Aaron Chandler with two talented freshmen in Bryan Burke and Jonathan McMullen. Burke is a hard-working player with a great instinct for scoring while McMullen’s speed will stretch the defense.

Three young, talented prospects, Jeff Penna from Danville, Felipe Cabrera and Rafai Eddy may also see action.

2007 USF MeN’S SOCCer

6

The University of San Francisco, as one of the great tradi-tional soccer powers in NCAA, has enjoyed a great legacy of coaches. Following the lead of Gus Donoghue, Bob

Braghetta and Stephen Negoesco, is head coach Erik Visser.Visser has built his legacy by leading the Dons to three

straight NCAA Tournament appearances, back-to-back West Coast Conference Championships in 2004 and 2005, and top-20 national rankings over the past three seasons. His fellow coaches recognized his leadership by electing him 2004 NSCAA Regional and 2004 and 2005 West Coast Conference "Coach of the Year."

Visser knows the great tradition of USF well. He was a top defender on two NCAA champion soccer teams at the Hilltop in 1978 and 1980. His marking of Indiana's Angelo DiBernardo was a key to the 1978 crown. After graduating from USF in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in government, he became part of Negoesco's coaching staff.

He has coached in a remarkable 626 games at USF and during his four year playing career competed in 102 for a total of 727 games in Green and Gold. He ranks third in career victories with 63 behind NSCAA Hall-of-Famers Donoghue (1946-1960), who tallied 121 and mentor Negoesco (1962-2000) who com-piled a then NCAA record 544. Visser recorded his 50th career victory at Portland on November 10, 2005 and owns an overall mark of 63-45-8.

His ability to win coincides with his eye for talent, recruiting the last two West Coast Conference Player of the Year award winners Rob Valentino and Aaron Chandler. The last Dons' player to win the conference's top award prior to 2005 was All-American Staale Soebye in 1993 and 1994. Valentino also became the first Dons' player to be named WCC Defender of the Year in 2005. Three of Visser's players have been named NSCAA Far West All-Region, five were named WCC First Team and another 11 were named WCC Second Team (13 total honors, 9 total awards).

Following his Dutch roots, Visser's coaching is based on a strong belief in an attacking, creative style of play. That mirrors the style of Negoesco's USF teams, who played a possession game based on accurate passing and free movement. Known as a player's coach, Visser's strength has always been his com-munication with his teams.

Visser also is a great fit for the University, with a strong belief

"Coach Visser is one of the top coaches in college soccer today. He has tremendous experience and understanding of the college game. He always prepares us well for each match, knowing what we need to do to win." - Rob Valentino, USF Captain and Hermann Trophy Candidate

"Erik is one of the brightest minds in collegiate soccer. He has a great eye for talent and always gets the most out of his players and his team. He is a players’ coach who is very passionate about the game. His record speaks for itself."- Thomas Rongen, U.S. Under-20 National Team Coach

in the education of the student-athlete. He served as USF's as-sistant athletic director for compliance and academic services for nine years at the Hilltop. He received a USF Merit Service Award for his duties to the University.

The 48-year old has strong ties to all levels of the soccer world. When USF started its women's soccer program in 1985, they named him the program's head coach. He guided the women through the 1990 season.

Erik was involved in the USA National Team program, having served as the top assistant for the Under-20 national team which finished 13th in the 2001 Youth World Cup in Argentina. Among the top young American stars he worked with were Landon Dono-van, Bobby Convey, DaMarcus Beasley and Edson Buddle.

He also served (1996-98) as the region IV Olympic Develop-ment Under-15 head coach.

Visser is proud to continue the USF tradition and follow the legendary Stephen Negoesco, who recruited him. He is putting his own stamp on the Dons' program.

"Steve has made a huge positive impact on my life and ca-reer," said Visser upon taking over the head coaching spot after the 2000 season.

"I am very honored to continue the rich tradition of USF soc-cer. I believe that we have the support of the administration to ensure that USF soccer will continue its national prominence in the new millenium.

"San Francisco is a unique city and USF is a unique Univer-sity. We have the opportunity to recruit both the best players from the western United States and also the world. This school is a special place. A great city, a small school with a great academic tradition and a nationally known soccer program."

Visser has earned two graduate degrees at USF. He received his master's degree in education in 1986 and completed his master's in sports and fitness management in 1993.

Prior to coming to USF, Visser played on the prestigious Ajax Amsterdam junior team and major division amateur soccer for AFC Amsterdam. Visser holds a US Soccer "A" license, a US Soccer Fitness license and a NSCAA Director of Coaching diploma.

Erik, his wife Martha, son, Brian, and daughter, Lauren, reside in American Canyon, in Napa County.

Hired in 2003 Josh McKay has been an intrical part of USF's recent success. Since the beginning of his tenure as an assistant to Coach Visser, the Dons have gone 46-28-7

with three straight NCAA tournament appearances. Following the 2005 season, McKay was promoted to the position of associate head coach. “Josh brings a lot to our soccer program,” said Dons’ head coach Erik Visser. “He was a youth soccer player in the Bay Area, played soccer at the highest collegiate level here at USF, has extensive pro experience and a USSF 'A' license. He deserves a great deal of credit for our recent success and our successes to come." From 1996 to 2002, McKay played an impressive 153 contests in the professional ranks as a member of the Colorado Rapids of the MLS and the USL's Richmond Kickers. With the Kickers in 1997, McKay accumulated 10 points on four goals and two assists. As McKay competed on the roster from 1997 to 2002, Richmond took no worse than third in their division. In 1998 and 2001, the Kickers were crowned division champions. They finished as league championship runner-ups in McKay's final season. Known as a 'tremendous left-sided threat coming out of the back field', McKay has part of a tough Kickers defense which in 2000 recorded 13 shutouts and allowed only 25 goals. At that time Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw said of McKay, "[Josh is a] proven A-League professional who leads by example." During his time with Richmond, McKay also served as the Kickers’ Youth Soccer Club’s Coach and Assistant Technical Director for three seasons.

A strong and powerful defender/midfielder, McKay hails from the soccer-rich Pleasanton area. After playing a season at UNLV, McKay returned to USF as a sophomore and led the Dons into the NCAA tournament as a junior (1993) and senior (1994). McKay played in 67 games in his collegiate career, including 48 in his three seasons at USF. He scored six goals, including three game-winners in his career. Another highlight was making one of the three penalty kick tiebreaker goals to advance USF at Fresno State in an NCAA playoff game in 1994.

In 1995, McKay earned his Bachelor's Degree from USF in English Composition. On June 8 of 2007, McKay and his wife Barbara were welcomed by the birth of their first child, Xavier Rhys. The McKays live in Pleasanton, Calif.

One year removed from a trip to the 2006 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship title game, former UCLA goalkeeper Eric Reed joins the USF men's team coaching staff.

At UCLA, Reed was surrounded by success. Between 2002-2005, he witnessed a national championship and four consecutive Pac-10 Conference titles. In goal for last season's title run, Reed recorded shutouts against No. 13 Harvard (3-0), No. 9 Clemson (3-0) and No. 3 Virginia (4-0). He made seven saves in the 2-1 title game loss to UC Santa Barbara. Reed finished his senior season with a record of 11-5-1. His six shutouts and 62 saves, both ranked second in the Pac-10. For his career, he accumulated a record of 34-12-5 on 162 saves and 24 shutouts. While attending to his studies, Reed also played three seasons for the Southern California Seahorses, a Premier Developmental League team located in the Los Angeles area. In 2004, he was named to the PDL All-Conference team and in 2006, he earned the league's Goalkeeper of the Year award. Reed gained coaching experience in the Southern California area as the Head Goalkeeper Trainer for Notre Dame Academy in L.A. and as Assistant Goalkeeper Trainer for both the Pacific Coast Soccer Club and Santa Monica United. In 2006, Reed earned his B.A. from UCLA in the Study of Religion. Along with coaching at USF and for the Novato Soccer Club, he's a member of the newly formed professional soccer team, the California Victory.

"We are very happy to add Eric Reed to our coaching staff as an assistant coach focusing mostly on the goalkeep-ers. He is an excellent role model for the players as he went to the championship match last year with the UCLA Bruins. He has a great work ethic and approach to the game."

When the West Coast Conference got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind - to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision 50 years ago is a marvelous cohesive athletics league which is competitive at the national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the Western United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in athletics and academics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in base-

ball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross-country, men's and women's golf, women's rowing, men's and women's soc-cer, men's and women's tennis and volleyball. The league was chartered by five Bay Area institutions (Pacific, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara) as the Califor-nia Basketball Association, playing its first game on January 2, 1953. After two seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became the "West Coast Athletic Conference" in 1956. The name was shortened to "West Coast Conference" in 1989. The current full-time lineup of WCC schools has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third most stable conference in the country.

His friends called him “Gus” and he is considered by most soc-cer enthusiasts as one of the greatest soccer coaches produced in the United States. Gus Donoghue was born March 17, 1911 in Glaskow, Scotland and first learned the game of soccer at St. Aloy-suis Elementary School, a Jesuitinstitution in Garnet Hill, Scotland. Gus came to San Francisco in 1925 and attended St. Ignatius High School and St. Ignatius College, as USF then was known. He was USF’s student body president and received his Master’s Degree from the University of California in 1937 and his Ph. D. from Stanford University in 1953. Gus was the major factor in USF’s first “Golden Era” in soccer in 1932-36, when the Dons took five consecutive conference championships. He cap-tained the Dons and was named All-American in 1934, 1935 and 1936. He was a member of the United States Olympic Team in 1936. Coach Donoghue took over the Hilltop coaching duties in 1941 and 1942. He left USF for military duty as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and returned in 1946. Gus received the “Coach of the Year” award from the San Francisco Football Association in 1950. That year, USF played in the first college soccer bowl game in the US in St. Louis, Missouri and shared the first recognized national championship with Penn State.Gus retired from the USF as Director of Admissions in 1973. He passed away on September 9, 2001. Coach Donoghue leaves a legacy that will live forever in the hearts of his team members: 118 wins, 10 losses, and 9 ties; 89 consecutive wins; 10 straight Northern California Intercollegiate Soccer Conference titles and 2 na-tional championships. His .909 winning percentage is the best among NCAA Division I coaches. Gus Donoghue brought dignity to the game of soccer. He impressed upon his teams the importance of skills, sportsmanship, courage and the Christian way of life. He had the unique ability and leadership to develop many inexperienced college men into great or All-American players while they were at the Hilltop. How did he do it? Gus cared, Gus recognized, Gus inspired, Gus gave of himself, Gus exemplified the highest qualities of human character. The recipient of the Gus Donoghue Award is highly honored. It repre-sents the highest recognition the University of San Francisco can bestow upon a soccer player wearing the green and gold.

The Dons under Negoesco made the NCAA semifinals for the first time since the tournament started in 1959.

Michigan State, Army, and Long Island University completed the soccer “final four” in Berkeley.Negoesco and his Dons met Army in the semifinal game at wet and foggy Memorial Stadium. The field was a mess, forcing many of the West Point booters shot at-tempts to sail off target. Negoesco’s talented Dons, who won their two previous games in the mud, were better prepared.Second half goals by Luis Sagastume and Sandor Hites gave the Dons a 2-0 victory, with Olympian Mike Ivanow recording the shutout. In improved weather conditions the follow-ing day, USF faced Long Island University, upset winners in the semifinal round. LIU took Michigan State into overtime where they triumphed 6-5 on corner kicks. Led by an outstanding effort by Sandor Hites, the Dons scored a record five goals enroute to a 5-2 win over LIU and USF’s first NCAA title. Hites accounted for three of the five Dons’ goals and was named the tournament’s out-standing offensive player, with four goals in USF’s two contests. It was the first of USF’s four NCAA crowns under Negoesco, as the Hilltoppers finished 11-0-1.

USF’s speed and finesse made the Dons the number one team in the country in 1975. They had to prove

it against a strong final four-team field in Edwardsville, Illinois that included host SIU-Edwardsville, Brown, and defending national champion Howard University. The Dons had their hands full in the semi-final contest against a tenacious Brown University pulling out a 3-2 decision in triple overtime. Forward Greg McKeown set up the Dons’ gamewinner with a pinpoint pass to a surprised and open Mal Roche who scored from ten yards to send the Dons to the title contest.USF was faced with the challenge of taking on the host team, SIU-Edwardsville for the championship. The Cougars were coming off a win over Howard University that pro-pelled them into the fray. The Dons were not intimidated as they walked off with the championship by a 4-0 count. USF started the scoring just 6:24 into the match, as lanky junior Greg McKeown headed home a Roche cross. Senior Paul Korn, an eventual draftee of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, also scored on a pass from Roche just fifteen minutes later. Victor Arbelaez, another senior, would close out the first half scoring to give the Dons a 3-0 halftime cushion.Even Southern Illinois’ hometown fans had nothing but praise for the finesse game that USF displayed in the first half. USF did not let up in the second stanza, with sophomore sensation Andy Atuegbu scoring the half’s only goal on a pass from Kjell Tvedt. The Nigerian sensation was named the tourna-ment’s Most Valuable Player.Charles Gould of the St. Louis Globe Demo-crat summed it up best: “If the mighty Dons from the banks of San Francisco Bay are not the best college soccer team to win the NCAA Division I Soccer Championships, then they have to be rated right near the top.”

After winning a national championship, the single most difficult task is living up to an established reputation, and

more specifically, successfully defending that championship. That situation faced Coach Steve Negoesco and his Dons in 1976.USF’s road to a second consecutive NCAA Division I Soccer Championship became a long and winding one that began one night in South San Francisco and ended in the subfreezing temperatures of Philadelphia’s Franklin Field. The Dons arrived in Philadelphia as the underdog of the four teams. Due to their unblemished mark, Clemson topped all the rankings with Indiana a close second. Hart-wick and USF rounded out the final four. The Dons again employed their new defense to shut off the finesse of Clemson in the semifinals. Behind the second half goal of John Brooks, USF went on to a 1-0 win over the top-ranked Tigers. The next day goalie Peter Arnautoff led the defense to still another shutout, the fifth straight for USF, as Dons successfully de-fended their championship with 1-0 victory over another undefeated squad, Indiana. As was the case in the 1975 tournament, the most decisive player on the field was All-American Andy Atuegbu. With 35 minutes elapsed in the contest, he took the ball at midfield and dribbled up the left side, and unleashed one of his patented cannonball shots perfectly into the top right corner. The 20-yard blast brought USF the 1976 NCAA Division I Championship. Atuegbu was se-lected the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year.

When Fidelis Atuegbu blasted a shot just inside the right post to clinch the 1980 championship for USF it kept

alive a family tradition. In 1976, it was an-other Atuegbu who made that magic happen when Andy brought Indiana down. The win marked the third time in five years USF had beaten the Hoosiers in championship play and gave USF its fourth title in eight years. The Hilltoppers began their drive to the Na-tional Championship by capturing the Pacific Soccer Conference crown, which had spent a one year vacation at Santa Clara. The Dons claimed the league crown with stretch drive victories over San Jose (3-1), Santa Clara (3-0) and Fresno State (4-1). Entering post-season competition with a 19-0-2 record and the #1 ranking in the nation, the Dons met UCLA for the Far West Championship and won. The quarterfinals meant long time foe St. Louis. In 19 years, the Midwestern-ers had stopped Coach Negoesco six out of seven times; but not this year.....USF 3-St. Louis 2.It was onto the Sunshine State and a meet-ing with Alabama A&M, ranked #2 and with basically the same team that demolished the Dons in 1979, 4-1. Despite a one-zip half time score, with the Green and Gold down, late goals by Luis Felipe Magalhaes and Bjorn Tronstad pulled out the win and it was on to the title game. For pure excitement and an improbable turn of events, there has never been a game quite like the 1980 championship. Indiana played a high pressure defense in the first half and it worked. The Dons were down 2-0 at the half, but this team had a habit of fight-ing back. But USF had a strong point..... endurance. The team thrived on pressure. It brought out performance. Steve Negoesco knew his players wouldn’t quit and fought to a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation.Fidelis Atuegbu was fresh and Steve knew that he had the leg and bang .....at 98:17 the game was history. The title once again belonged to the boys from the City by the Bay.

Rev. Stephen A. Privett, S.J., began his tenure as the 27th president of the University of San Francisco on September

15, 2000. Father Privett, 63, was born in San Francisco.

He entered the Society of Jesus in 1960 and is a graduate of The Catholic University of America, the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley and Gonzaga University. He is an expert in the fields of Catechetics and the role of the Hispanic community in the Catholic Church.Prior to his appointment at USF, Father Privett served as provost and academic vice president at Santa Clara University. As provost, he was responsible for oversight of student life, intercollegiate athletics, as well as academic affairs. While teaching at Santa Clara, he was recognized for “Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership” with the Sears Roebuck Foundation Award. He also helped establish the Eastside Project, a program that received national recognition as a model program for community-based learning. Early in his career, Father Privett was an instructor at Jesuit High School in Sacramento and Principal of Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose. USF ADMINISTrATION

Dave Macmillan thinks 2007-08 could be a year in which USF Men’s Athletics starts to move into the upper echelon of WCC

programs. USF Athletics has reported to the University's Vice President for University Advancement since 2002. Since then, funding for athletic scholarships has grown, talented coaches and administrators have been recruited, and renovations made to Negoesco Stadium, Benedetti Diamond and War Memorial Gymnasium.

Support for Athletics has come from Fr. Privett, the Board of Trustees, the on-campus community and off-campus alumni and friends. Pride in USF Athletics is back. USF ADMINISTrATION

Debra Gore-Mann was named Athletics Director at the University of San Francisco July 21, 2006. Gore-Mann is the first fe-

male Director of Athletics at USF and just the third overall in West Coast Conference history.

Gore-Mann, who served as the Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator since 1999, played a key role in the Stanford Athletics program that has won an unprecedented 12 consecu-tive Sports Academy Director’s Cups, signifying the most successful Divi-sion I Athletic Department in the Nation. During her tenure in Palo Alto the Cardinal captured 14 Division I National Championships. Just the third athletic director at USF since 1985, Gore-Mann is ex-cited about the opportunity for continued success on the Hilltop. “It was a challenging but exhilarating first year on the Hilltop,” Gore-Mann said. “We experience the usual transitional challenges but I believe we pulled together as a team to help support our head coaches and all of our student-athletes.” USF made a pair of postseason trips in 2006-07. USF men’s soccer advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year, making their 30th overall appearance. Dons women’s golf also qualified for NCAA Regional play earning a berth for the sixth time in the last seven years. “I feel we are entering a new era for our women’s sports programs with three new head coaches in the sports of volleyball, soccer and golf. I

am tremendously excited about our entire coaching staff and believe we are poised to have strong competitive seasons across all of our sports programs.” “Most importantly heading into our collective second season together, I think we have created the support system and resources that will allow our student-athletes to excel. It has been most rewarding in my first year to get to know our student-athletes and I really appreciate all that is being accomplished both in the competitive arena and in the classroom.” Gore-Mann replaced Dr. Bill Hogan, who accepted the Director of Athletics position at Seattle University after 15 years at the University of San Francisco. The Dons captured the West Coast Conference’s Men’s All-Sports Award in 2005-06 for the first time ever and enjoyed the most successful spring sports season in school history in 2006. At Stanford, Debra served as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Finance and Operations from 1999-2005 and most recently served as Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations and Senior Women’s Administrator. Gore-Mann reported directly to Dr. Ted Leland, named one of the “10 most influential persons in college athletics” by Sports Business Journal. She shared financial responsibility for the more than $50 million annual Stanford Athletic Department budget and shared management of 34 sports. Gore-Mann served as Senior Project Manager on the recent Stanford Stadium renovations and served as the lead negotiator on the Cardinal all-school apparel contract with Nike, Inc.. Prior to her tenure at Stanford, Gore-Mann worked in the corporate sector for Bechtel Enter-prises, Inc (1993-99), Morgan Stanley & Co. (1987-92) and Raychem Corp (1982-85). Debi is married to former USF varsity basketball player Anthony Mann, who was a member of the 1985-86 “Return to Basketball” squad and has an 11-year old daughter, Quinci.

Debra GOre-MANNAthletic Director2nd Year

I am very proud and honored to be the Director of Athletic Development for the University of San Fran-cisco. USF has been an integral part of my life and

I look forward to the great opportunities ahead. USF Athletics strives to change the lives of the people we come in contact with and encourage them to go out and make a positive impact in the world. Financial support from alumni, parents, friends and former student-athletes is vital to a successful athletic program. We need to work together to help today’s USF coaches and student-athletes achieve their dreams of excellence and to be the best in the West Coast Conference both in competition and in the classroom. These funds will create opportunities for continued successful programs on a national level, allow our student-athletes to demonstrate excellence in academics and enhance the visibility and reputation of the University of San Francisco. I invite you to be a part of our USF family as we continue to “Reach New Heights” on the Hilltop together. Our student-athletes and coaches will make you proud. go DonS!

Founded in 1855, the University of San Francisco has developed over the past 152 years into one of the premiere private universities in California. Throughout its history, USF has remained faithful to

its Jesuit mission of preparing men and women as leaders in service to others. The University is committed to academic programs that offer the intellectual traditions and tools to understand the past, clarify the present and anticipate the future. USF is dedicated to providing students with the academic and personal skills necessary for success in the 21st century. USF is proud of its partnership with the world-class city of San Francisco. The school has been newly energized by dynamic programs, as well as increasing public interest and a rise in enrollment. One such program is the new mission statement, unanimously en-dorsed by the USF Board of Trustees, for the University of San Francisco Athletic Department, “Reaching New Heights on the Hilltop”. The main goal stated in the document is for all USF athletic teams to compete for championships in all sports in the West Coast Conference. Along with winning, USF wants to maintain the excellent academic success and com-munity service projects that the Dons’ athletic teams have strived for and achieved in recent years. “I am pleased that our trustees unanimously endorsed our new Mission and Goals Statement for USF Athletics,” said USF President Fr. Stephen A. Privett, S.J. “I support this statement and am confident that the goals we have set for ourselves are achievable and that USF can be a model Jesuit intercollegiate athletic program. We are in Division I to win,” he added. In addition, the plan notes major athletic facility improvements, such as a renovation of the War Memorial Gym and upgrades of the baseball and soccer fields, will be needed, though these are not part of the trustee-approved goals. The massive scale of future plans and past accomplishments have not caused USF to lose sight of its primary mission: to graduate ethical men and women committed to moral principles and human values.

So the character of USF remains intact today as it continues into the new millennium, as it was in the Gold Rush days when St. Ignatius Acad-emy first opened its doors on Market Street in 1855. One of USF's hallmarks today, as it has been for some 150 years, is the strong bond that develops between student and faculty. The average class size at USF is about 18. Included among more than 56,000 USF living alumni are judges, leg-islators, Pulitzer Prize winners and leaders in business, education, public service, the arts and athletics. USF intercollegiate athletic programs have always enjoyed a strong tradition and field 15 teams, competing in the West Coast Conference at the NCAA Division I level. Men's teams include baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer tennis and track. Sports offered for women are basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball and track. USF volleyball earned the first NCAA Tournament bid in program history in 2003, while the USF women's golf qualified for its sixth NCAA Regional berth in seven years in 2007. The USF men's soccer team quali-fied for the NCAA Tournament for the 30th time in 2006. All told, USF boasts numerous WCC titles, as well as nine national championships with four in men's soccer (1966, 1975, 1976, 1980); three in men's basketball (1949 NIT, 1955, 1956); and one each in men's singles tennis (1948) and men's team tennis (1949).

NeGOeSCO STADIUMA BeAUTIFUl PlACe FOr SOCCer

One of the finest collegiate soccer only stadiums in the country, Ne-goesco Stadium is unmatched in its beautiful setting in the shadow of St. Ignatius Church. Dedicated to and orchestrated by USF

Men's Soccer legend Stephen Negoesco, the stadium formally opened on September 17, 1982, when a sellout crowd saw USF topple Indiana, 3-2, in overtime. The building of the stadium was truly a team effort with school officials, alumni, former players and friends all lending a hand. A series of renovations and improvements over the past couple of years, have transformed the stadium into one of the premier venues on the West Coast. The most significant change occurred prior to the 2003 season with the installation of FieldTurf, the best artificial grass surface available. FieldTurf is the highest rated artificial turf, used throughout the world as a surface that plays virtually the same as grass. With the addition of FieldTurf, the USF men's and women's soccer programs boast one of the finest playing surfaces on the West Coast. Negoesco Stadium added television lights for the 2000 season and increased the stadium's capacity to 3,000. The new seats include theatre-style seating on the west side of the stadium and new permanent seating on the east side. The facility has been used for matches involving Major League Soccer teams, most recently when the San Jose Earthquakes hosted the Los Angeles Galaxy. During the summer of 2002, the San Jose Earthquakes hosted the Shanghai Shenhua (Pumas) for an international exhibition contest. The field has also served as a site for World Cup training.
