The SPDSA invited all volunteers to attend the
2015/16 indoor season Volunteer/Staff Appreciation
night on March 4.
The evening began with volunteers arriving at
Millennium Place and finding out what team they
had been drafted by. The defending champions “Red
Rockets” were met with a chorus of boo’s from the
challenging teams. Once the boots were laced and
the teams finished their lackluster warmups, the
games began and players began showing off their
skills.
Despite boasting a star-studded line-up, team “Grey
Goose” was unable to put it together on the evening
and ended up finishing in 4th place. “Orange Crush”
was disappointed by the inconsistent refereeing in
their first game against the “Bananas” which was
refereed by one of the Banana’s players, and ended
up finishing in 3rd place. The Championship came
down to the “Red Rockets” and the aforementioned
“Bananas.” In a great game, the Bananas ended up
squeezing out the win to capture their first
Volunteer Appreciation Night Trophy.
The focus shifted from soccer to food as the group
headed to Average Joe’s for some delicious food and
the opportunity to win some great door prizes. It
was great to see Volunteers from all different
teams, age-groups and levels interacting at Average
Joes and the turnout was well above what we
initially expected.
The SPDSA could not operate without the fantastic
support of all of our volunteers, and this night is our
small way of saying Thanks!

SPDSA Family Day Cup Over the Family Day weekend youth soccer
took a break with the SPDSA hosting their
annual Adult Indoor Tournament, the Family
Day Cup.
The tournament consisted of four divisions
featuring a total of 26 teams. The Women’s
Recreational ‘A’ division had 6 teams,
Recreational ’B’ division had 8 teams, Men’s
Recreational ’B’ division had 8 teams. For the
first time ever the Family Day Cup hosted a Co-
Ed division which had 4 teams.
The SPDSA partnered with Average Joe’s Sports
Bar who kindly gave each player 15% off their
bill the entire weekend, and a $10 Gift
Certificate to each player of the game. They
also supplied the tournament with
Championship Trophies.
The Co-Ed division was aimed at a fun
and social experience for teams, and
in the end SWAT, who came up from
Calgary defeated Balls and Dolls in
the final.
The Women’s Rec ‘A’ boasted some of the best
soccer of the weekend, featuring tightly
contested Semi-Finals and Finals. Dreadnoughts
defeated S.W. Fever in the final 4-2 in a closely
contested match.
The Women’s Rec ‘B’ saw another final that
could have gone either way in a great defensive
match-up. In the end, the Strikers were able to
hold off the S.W. Fever Res team 2-0 to capture
the championship.
In the Men’s division, it was long time Family
Day Cup veterans Leduc FC taking the title as
they defeated first time participants Calisia 6-4
in an exciting back and forth final.
Congratulations to our winners and a big thanks
from the SPDSA to all teams that participated in
this years tournament.

Practice Organisation
Area 15x10 yards, with a central area 2/3 yard wide across grid and goal appropriate size at one end, as illustrated
5 players (including goalkeeper), arranged 3 attackers v 1 defender, as shown in the diagram
Practice starts with: 2 attackers with ball in deep zone, looking to combine, evade defender (who is confined to central area) and get the ball to
attacker in the advanced zone.
On receiving forward pass, advanced attacker controls, turns quickly and strikes at goal
If defender intercepts or blocks/deflects forward pass, a point is scored
Once ball goes dead: players rotate roles and practice recommences with initial set-up arrangements
Key Coaching Points
Early recognition of defenders position and movement
Awareness of movement beyond defender by
advanced attacker, offering support
Movement of advanced attacker, showing good
supporting position (depth and angle of support)
Defender sliding, covering and awareness of passage
of ball with 2 attackers along with movement behind
Selection of appropriate passing technique and
execution to advanced attacker
Reception of forward pass: body shape and 1st touch
control
Awareness of position of goal and goalkeeper
Shooting techniques to be employed and execution of
finish
Details
Nature of support play from attackers
Intelligent marshalling of defensive situation from
defender
Simple progressions for this practice are:
Defender can leave central zone once ball is
advanced to attacker and chase/apply pressure
from behind
1 of the 2 attackers in the deep zone can move into
advanced zone to support advanced attacker
Introduce 2nd defender in central area who can
retreat when forward pass is made into advanced
attacker
Increase depth of central area to 8/10th of a yard,
so advanced attacker can come short to receive;
turn and attack goal from deeper position
