2007 FALL SPORTS 3

We are very proud to welcome you, the fans, to Central Catholic’s Bill Hundman Memorial Field and the Bill Cvengros Gymnasium for the 2007 fall sport season. Special thanks to Pete Van Valey and David Peel for building our ticket booths to keep our volunteer ticket takers warm and dry. As always, we are grateful to our donors who have made all of this possible and who continue to support and help upgrade our facilities. We hope all our fans and spectators enjoy all events in our beautiful athletic facility. We encourage you to come support our fall sports’ teams wherever they play.

As we strive to continue our traditions in this complex, we encourage you to demonstrate good sportsmanship and cooperation. Any person demonstrating behavior/actions not in the spirit of good sportsmanship will be asked to leave our facility. Although the athletes are members of opposing teams, they are friendly rivals. Their participation in the game reflects the essence of interscholastic athletics – to play hard but fair.

Our Booster Club has put together this program and asks that you please support the advertisers who have made this program possible. Thank you for your support of Central Catholic. Go Saints!

THE INITIAL ELIGIBILITY & AMATEURISM CLEARINGHOUSEWhat is the Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse? If you intend to participate in Division I athletics as a freshman, you must register with and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. Your high school counselor should provide you with the student-release form and a red brochure titled, “Making Sure You Are Eligible to Participate in College Sports.”What does the Clearinghouse need to certify me?After graduation and before school closes for the summer, your high school must send the Clearinghouse a copy of your final transcript that confirms graduation from high school. You must also have your ACT or SAT scores sent to the Clearinghouse. How do I have my test scores sent to the Clearinghouse?Test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. You can accomplish this by marking code 9999 as one of the institutions to receive your scores, or submit a request for an “Additional Score Report” to the appropriate testing agency. What is the Amateurism Clearinghouse?Beginning in the Fall of 2006, all prospects who will be entering a Division I or II collegiate institution for the first time in the Fall of 2007 will also need to be certified by the NCAA Amateurism Clearinghouse. NCAA President Myles Brand authorized the creation of this branch in response to the NCAA membership’s concerns about amateurism issues related to international and domestic prospective and transfer student-athletics (prospects). How do I register with these entities? To register with the Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse, complete the Student Release Form and mail the top (white) copy of the form to the Clearinghouse along with the required registration fee or register online at www.NCAAClearinghouse.net. You should apply for certification after your junior year in high school if you are sure that you wish to participate in intercollegiate athletics as a freshman at a Division I or II institution. If you fail to submit all required documents, your incomplete file will be discarded after three years, requiring you to register again. Your registration fee will cover certification of initial eligibility and amateur status. The Amateurism Clearinghouse operates through online registration only and is also located at www.NCAAClearinghouse.net All prospects will be required to complete a questionnaire about their athletics participation prior to full-time collegiate enrollment at a Division I or Division II institution. Prospects will not be permitted to participate in intercollegiate competition until initial eligibility and amateurism certifications are completed.16-Core Course RuleFor prospective student-athletes first entering a collegiate institution in 2008 or after, you must meet the 16-core course rule. The core requirements are:

4 years of English 3 years of mathematics (Algebra I or higher) 2 years of natural/physical science (one must be a lab science) 1 year of additional English, math or science 2 years of social studies

4 years of additional core courses (from any area listed above, or from foreign language, nondoctrinal religion or philosophy)

RECRUITING REGULATIONSWhen do I become a prospective student-athlete?When you start ninth-grade classes. Before the ninth grade, you become a prospective student-athlete if a college gives you (or your relatives or friends) any financial aid or other benefits that the college does not provide to all prospective students. When is a college considered to be recruiting me?If any coach or representative of the college’s athletics interests approaches you (or any member of your family) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college.Who can recruit me?Only university coaches and staff. Alumni and friends of the university are NOT permitted to contact prospective student-athletes in any way.

OFFICIAL VISITSHow many official visits am I allowed to take? Beginning when? Each prospective student-athlete is limited to five official visits which may be taken following the opening day of classes of your senior year of high school. What must the school have from me before I take an official visit? The recruiting institution must already have a high school or a college transcript and ACT or SAT test scores on file.

UNOFFICIAL VISITSCan I pay my own way to visit a college campus? Starting when? You may visit an institution’s campus at your own expense an unlimited number of times before your senior year of high school and continuing in your senior year. This is an unofficial visit.

MEET OUR COACH... Coach Mary Jo Bell and her husband, Michael, have four children. Tabitha, a junior, and Adam, a freshman, both attend Central Catholic High School and are on the school golf teams. Daughters Sarah and Samantha both attend Epiphany grade school. Coach Bell is one of six children, and golf has been a major part of her family history. She won the Peoria City golf tournament at age 16, and qualified in a National tournament to play the finals at Walt Disney World. A Bloomington Country Club champion six times, she recently won the CICCA championship, a conference of eight central Illinois Country Clubs. This past season was Coach Bell’s first year as the CCHS girls’ golf coach. Last year, the team took sixth place in state, and she couldn’t be more proud of them. She looks forward to the upcoming season, and is excited to work with the girls. Her goal is to teach them the game of golf as well as teach them how to conduct themselves as young Christian adults.

Boys Cross Country

MEET OUR COACH... Coach Engelhorn begins his 6th year as Head Cross-Country Coach at CCHS. Coach Engelhorn was a three-year letter winner in both Track and Cross-Country at Normal U-High from 1976-1979. He was a member of the 1979 U-High Two-Mile relay team which earned State Runner-up honors. That relay squad still holds the U-High school record at 7:55.4. Coach Engelhorn shared Track Most Valuable honors with his twin brother, Matt, that same season. He continued his Track and Field career at Illinois State University from 1979 to 1981. Coach Engelhorn graduated in 1986 from Illinois State with a B.S. in History and a minor in Political Science. Coach Engelhorn began his coaching career at Epiphany Grade School in 2000. In 2002, he joined the CCHS Track and Field staff as an Assistant Coach and re-introduced the Cross-Country program there that fall. As a Cross-Country coach, Coach Engelhorn guided the first CCHS runner to qualify for the Sectional meet since 1992. In 2004, four of Coach Engelhorn’s Cross-Country athletes qualified for the Sectional meet. In 2005, both CCHS Boys and Girls teams qualified for the IHSA Sectional Meet for the first time. The 2006 season was by far the most successful in CCHS history. The boys team finished 5th in the IHSA State meet. Along the way, the boys’ team won the “Comeback Team of the Year” at the St. Joseph-Ogden Spartan Classic by improving from 18th to 5th place. The boys’ team won the Prairie Central Hawks Invitational, U-High Invitational, Corn Belt Conference Meet, and IHSA Monticello Regional. Other honors were finishing

2nd in the Mahomet Invitational (18 teams) and 2nd in the IHSA Olympia Sectional. The 2006 Central Catholic Girls’ team also saw success as a young team. According to Coach Engelhorn, “There is a tremendous amount of talent in our distance runners here at Central Catholic. Realistically, we should have several athletes qualify for state in their respective events. Our Cross-Country program grew from six runners in 2003 to 27 this season. I am honored to be a coach at a terrific school like CCHS and help create standout runners here.” Two of Coach Engelhorn’s runners have gone on to run at the Collegiate level. Coach Engelhorn is a United States Track and Field Level I (USATF) certified coach. He is also certified by the American Sports Education Program (ASEP) as a High School coach and is a member of the United States Track Coaches Association. In his spare time, Coach Engelhorn continues to run competitively and will be running his second marathon in the fall in hopes of qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 2008. Coach Engelhorn has been married to his wife Anina for 15 years. Anina is a Critical Care RN at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
