The PhD in Business Administration program at Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary’s University is expanding to three specializations. Building on the success of PhD Business Administration (Management) over the past 20 years, we are pleased to invite applications to one of the three streams: Accounting, Finance, or Management.

The first cohort of the expanded program will commence coursework on May 1, 2021. Applications to all streams are currently open and should be submitted by January 1, 2021.

Key structural elements of the program:

The program’s main site is Saint Mary’s University campus. In-residence courses over eight weeks during spring/summer months are combined with on-line directed study seminars/courses using online or video-conferencing technology throughout the rest of the year.

• During fall and winter months, based on their research interests and direction in the program, students attend an intensive, in-residence, week-long seminar module (once in the Fall semester, once in Winter semester) to maintain face-to-face contact with faculty and develop socialization into the research and teaching atmosphere of the academic profession. These modules complement and support technology-mediated courses during fall and winter terms and are required for successful completion of these courses.

• Upon completion of the coursework during the first 24 months of the program, students write comprehensive (qualifying) examinations. They then proceed to dissertation (thesis) research and continue collaborative research projects with faculty. Total program duration is typically between 3.5 and 6 years, net of leaves and extensions.

• PhD students have opportunities to develop both research and teaching competencies. Students may be afforded the opportunity to teach twice during their PhD program (post comprehensive exam), either at Saint Mary’s University or at another university in Canada.

• Numerous opportunities are available to work as research assistants on projects for which faculty members hold SSHRC and other grants.

Three to five students per year will be admitted within each stream.

Admission criteria include:

• A graduate degree in the field intended for specialization or related field (e.g., accounting, finance, economics, management, or industrial / organizational psychology), or an MBA.

• For the Accounting and/or Finance stream, a corresponding professional accounting designation (e.g., CPA, CFA) and 3 or more years of professional experience are preferred.

• Demonstrated interests and capacity in scholarly and/or applied research within the chosen specialization.

• GMAT score 620 (minimal acceptable 600) or an equivalent GRE score.
