BE L O W A R E E X C E R P T S F R O M A C A S I N O Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) press release. On Monday, March 15, the CRDA ap-proved the South Inlet Demolition Program, which targets unoccupied, derelict structures for demolition in an area bordered by Delaware, Maine and Melrose avenues and the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The program is a pilot for pos-sible future demolition projects in Atlantic City. The CRDA has negotiated with representatives of the City of Atlantic City and Revel Entertainment to structure the investment and the program criteria. The program will be funded by $500,000 via a donation to CRDA by Revel as a pre-pay-ment against their Atlantic City Housing Investment Alternative Tax obligations.

The South Inlet Demolition Program is consistent with some of the suggestions heard in meetings held by [A.C.] Mayor Lorenzo Langford, says CRDA Executive Director Thomas D. Carver. Many of the community and business leaders said that the perception of Atlantic City needed to be improved. This is a good first step.

In a description of the program and summary of pro-cedure, it is explained that CRDA funds will be provided to the City of Atlantic City in two $250,000 installments. The second installment will be issued by the CRDA once the initial installment depletes to $50,000. Funds will cover such things as utility disconnection fees, demolition costs (permits, all on-site demolition, disposal, grading, etc.). It will not cover such items as unpaid utility bills, staff costs, legal fees and relocation expenses. The program requirements include a dedicated city staff and a start-up date within 30 days of the initial, demolition liens placed by the city, city-recovered funds returned to the CRDA within 30 days of receipt, mutually agreed-upon demo-lition priorities, monthly status meetings between the CRDA and city program staff, and all work competitively bid upon and awarded to qualified contractors.

All of this is very good news to the city, as the demoli-tion program is one that has been discussed for many years, but the financial wherewithal needed to get rid of the derelict structures in the city was never achieved. Hopefully additional funds will be found to attack the other areas within the community. This is the beginning of more to come from the committees that have been meeting to come up with ways of improving and beautify-ing Atlantic City, and bringing in more events for visitors and to the areas residents.

    A Successful A-10 TourneyLast year at this time we were concerned about the Atlantic 10 tournament remaining in Atlantic City. The two-year contract had expired and the 14 universities involved in the A-10 were to vote on returning to Atlantic City or other sites that expressed interest in hosting the tournament. Fortunately, under the leadership of League Commissioner Bernadette McGlade, the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of Atlantic City and they chose to sign a three-year contract extension with Boardwalk Hall. Despite the horrendous weather, the four events on Friday, March 12, (two doubleheaders) drew 11,445 fans;

the one on Saturday, March 13, had 8,208 fans; and the championship on Sunday, March 14, was played before 7,882 spectators. The total for all of the events was 27,535 paying spectators the largest A-10 tournament crowd in five years. Without a doubt, there would have been severalthousand more if we had good weather.

Boardwalk Hall was certainly the place to be last week-end. Most of the colleges brought their school bands and cheerleaders. Each of the games was well played, and you could tell by the scores that the emphasis was on defense. For the third consecutive year Temple was crowned A-10 champions. The quality of the play in a marvelous arena where every seat was a good one provided an experi-ence that had the people saying to one another after the games, I will see you next year in Boardwalk Hall. Congratulations to all those who were involved in makingthe A-10 tournament the success that it was.

By the way, that was the second consecutive, weekend-long sporting event hosted by Boardwalk Hall. First came the New Jersey High School Wrestling Championships.Next year the ECAC Hockey Championships will be held in the third weekend of March. Some of the ECACs 14 col-leges with hockey programs such as Princeton, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown and others will be coming to A.C. for their consolation and championship games. There will be two league semifinal games on Friday and the consola-tion and final game will be held on Saturday. The colleges have rabid hockey fans and they are looking forward to coming to Atlantic City for their marquee event. Steve Hagwell, the ECAC hockey commissioner, was here for the A-10. He said he is anxiously awaiting the opportunity for his league to have their championship determined here. This town should be booming in March 2011.

Notes of InterestGood news for those living in the Enclave Condominiums in the Chelsea section of Atlantic City. While walking on the Boardwalk last week I saw a young lady climbing a lad-der in the dormant, dilapidated pavilion on the Boardwalk at Roosevelt Place. I asked her what she was doing and she told me that she was taking measurements for architects. Ilater learned at a Boardwalk Committee meeting that the CRDA has hired an architectural firm for the redevelop-ment of that pavilion and that it should be rebuilt in time for the summer season. Im happy to pass that information along to those of you whove been inquiring when the pavilion would be available for those who liked to sit there and enjoy the view of the dunes (the view used to be of the ocean) and those walking on the Boardwalk. Slowly but surely, the upgrading of the Boardwalk will be done. n

Cooking For The United WayFor the past six years, one of the biggest fundraisers for The United Way of Atlantic County has been its Auction for the Community. And this Friday (March 19), the charity will be spicing things up with some celebrity chefs and a legend-ary Flyer at Ballys in the Traymore Ballroom. The chefs are Georges Perrier and Chris Scarduzio (pictured), partners of the acclaimed Mediterranean bistro Mia located in Caesars. This is the first time weve had them and theyre the enter-tainment portion of the evening, says Mary Godleski, of the United Way. Theyll be doing some demonstrations and then part of the auction will be a chefs table, where three couples will be served the food they prepare. But there will also be a table for samples from Mia for everyone. The Flyer is Dave The Hammer Schultz, who proved himself an able auctioneer at a United Way charity golf event in October. He was great and we had to have him back, Godleski says. The event, presented by Harrahs Entertainment, will also honor Harrahs public relations guru Alyce Parker and includes the live auction and an extended silent auction, dinner and cocktails. Items for sale include cruises, trips and music memorabilia. Tickets are $100. Call 404-4483 or visit unitedwayac.org for information. Mike Pritchard

SeaBlues Supercharged Social HourPerhaps inspired by the popularity of Izakaya Mondays and Wine Down Wednesdays at Fornelletto Borgata culinary concepts that allow diners to sample small-plate menu items and cocktails at discounted prices Michael Minas SeaBlue restaurant recently joined the soiree with what it dubs the SeaBlue Social Hour. Happening every Wednesday through Sunday from 5-7pm, the Social Hour offers such cocktail concoctions as SeaBlue Sangria, the New York Sour, the Tangerine Cosmopolitan and the Pomegranate Martini for $8, and scaled-down appetizer and entre items like ahi tuna tartare ($6), crispy calamari ($5), mini fish sandwiches ($7), and fresh oysters or clams for $2 each. All of SeaBlues menu items are made with fresh and/or organic ingredients. Its kitchen is under the auspices of Anthony Amoroso, a graduate of the Culinary Arts Institute of Hudson County (N.J.) College with a pedigree that includes having been Minas executive chef at Bellagio in Las Vegas. He also worked with two distinguished chefs and restaurateurs Michael White and Rick Moonen. In a recent interview with starchefs.com, Amoroso described his culinary ideol-ogy this way: Philosophically, less is more. You start to really hone in on what you like and what you dont like. You dont notice what you dont like until you have your sous [chef] doing specials and you realize theyve done too much, and you start taking stuff out. It has to be cohesive. Ray Schweibert

Moreland & ArbuckleFlood (Telarc)This old-time blues three-piece has a new disc out that sounds like it could have been made in the 1930s. With elements of traditional folk, blues and American roots, the 13-track set includes mostly originals. A terrific take on vintage sounds with a slight modern touch. The boys have toured with Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Johnny Winter.

    Oscars Lacked StardustBy Jerry Blavat

    see more online @

GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS. Tis the boss with the Hot Sauce and lo and behold, whether you realize it or not, May is just weeks away, with big happenings coming your way. Soon, its on to the opening of our 39th season at Memories in Margate. And with the com-ing of Memorial Day, look for a new live Geator Gold broadcast straight from the Jersey shore on Cruisin 92.1. Well keep you posted but now, lets ask the Geator.

We listen regularly on Saturday night and wish your show was longer. You mentioned a group from Harrisburg that you seemed to think was terrific, and you played a tune, Just a Matter of Time. Our research shows this song was charted by Brook Benton in February 1959. Can you tell us who the group was? Denise L. Kurr, Camp Hill, Pa.

The group from Harrisburg is the Magnificent Men, one of the first white

groups to achieve a genuine black soul sound. However, the song I played by them was not Its Just a Matter of Time, which Brook Benton made famous, but the now classic Peace of Mind. It does contain a similar lyric (I know its just a matter of time, Im gonna find peace of mind), but is a completely different song.

Jerry, do you watch the Academy Awards? What did you think of this years ceremony? Florence N.

Unfortunately this years telecast, in my opinion, lacked the stardust that was always a part of the Oscars. The combina-tion of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, even though individually they are great talents, just didnt make it happen. It seemed to me that they were doing more of a stand-up routine rather than hosting the biggest show business awards show of the year. And some of the acceptance

speeches could have been more gracious. Summing it up, I felt the whole produc-tion left a lot to be desired.

I havent seen anything mentioned for a long time about the Malt Shop Memory Cruise in May. Can you give up an update?

    Annie, Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Well, the cruise is nearly sold out. As a matter of fact, last week I had dinner with Frankie Avalon in the Big Apple and he told me that everyone is excited that we can spend some time with the fans. Of course along with Frankie and the Geat are Little Anthony, Lesley Gore, Lou Christie, Charlie Thomas and the Drifters, Lou Christie, Herb Reeds Platters, and Bobby Rydell, plus some new doo-wop groups being added. There will be dance parties, and if youd like to learn all of the dances that we do, weve got Geator Gold instructors on board to teach you the steps, along with exciting

meet and greets, private parties with thestars, trivia games, plus if youre a part ofthe Geator Gold group, an opportunity towin $500 in cruise chips. But remember, you must use the code word JERRY or men-tion the Geator when booking to be a partof all these extras. For updates, check outthe maltshopcruise.com Web site. n

RAIN (AND SNOW) SEEMS TO have been the continuous bane of Atlantic City since last summer and the storm that blew through the region over the weekend may have been felt at the citys poker tables, especially at Caesars World Series of Poker cir-cuits main event. The event, a $4,900 + $250 No Limit Holdem tournament, failed to break $1 million in total prize money coming in at $817,015. Still, despite the weather, the event attracted 174 entrants, from 20 states and sev-en different nations, according to the WSOP folks.

Poker pro Roland Isra, 52, of New York, won the tournament taking home the $264,715 top prize as well as a $10,000 seat at the WSOP Main Event in July at The Rio in Las Vegas. Isra has had several final table appearances in major tourna-ments, but finally broke through for a win. He also had a cash (37th) at the 2005 WSOP main event.

Isra won the top spot after facing down second place finisher Christopher Mitchell of Sumter, S.C., heads-up for about three hours. Mitchell, who suffered several bad beats at the final table, even-tually lost to Isras two pair after missing an inside straight draw. He took home $138,894.

The tournament was played over three days beginning March 12 and finishing up late Sunday. Among those who cashed was Paul Wasicka, perhaps best known as the runner-up finisher to Jamie Gold in the 2006 WSOP Main Event. Wasicka finished 12th. Another top pro who cashed was Jacobo Fernandez (14th), who enjoyed a huge year at the 2008 WSOP when he cashed seven times and made three final tables. Las Vegas pro Nick Binger also made the money, finishing in 17th place, according to the WSOP blog.

Also, the circuit events second biggest tournament, a $1,500 + $100 No Limit Holdem, which began March 10, was won by Thomas Sandy Taylor, a 27-year-old pro from Ontario. He took home $89,570, winning with pocket fives.

Though a good selection or pros turned out, the overall circuit event, which included 12 major tournaments, attracted a strong showing of amateurs who took more than their fair share of the WSOP rings given out to tournament winners,

especially in the early events. The win-ners list also showed that the tournament attracted players from throughout the East Coast, both south and north, and even drew some from out west. We can only imagine how many more would have turned out with a little sun.

Waking up from Your DreamsBy Whitney Ullman

A RE YOU IN YOUR DREAM HOME? Do you have your dream car? Do you have your dream diamond ring? Im guessing most of you said no, but thats OK, we are all pretty much in the same boat. Its funny because I go to a lot of motivational classes and I learned a lot from working in the corporate world. One of the things that I always seem to hear is how we need to dream about what we want. When I worked in the mortgage world, many people ripped out photos from car magazines with their dream cars, or they would have a print out of their dream home or Rolex watch, whatever and it would be staring them in the face every day at their desk. I guess it is a motivating factor for some, but that was never my motivation. My motiva-tion was usually winning the daily con-test, excelling in general or the thrill of being No. 1 that month in sales.

Then I would attend seminars and the speakers would talk about envisioning your dream car, house, vacation, jewelry, whatever and the theory is if you put it out there in the universe then it will come to you.

Well, here is some advice for all of you dreamers. This may come as a shock, but you need to stop dream-ing and start waking up to reality. Working smart, knowing who you are, surrounding yourself with positive people, and networking efficiently are pretty much the keys to being suc-cessful and having all of those fancy things. Having dreams of grandeur, living the lifestyles of the rich and famous is all good and I am not saying its a bad thing, but I am saying that if you are living in your dream world then you are not living in reality.

Experts agree that if you concentrate on being the best in your business or raising the best family and making the world a better place then the good life will come. You wont be disappointed and will more easily accept what you get if your dreams of the good life are more realistic.

Think about how you were raised. Think about what your parents sacrificed for you, think about how you will raise your children, and think about what you

are doing now to make sure you are living the life you want. If youre not, what can you do to start out on the right path?

In life everything happens for a reason and life is too short to let it go by without doing what you love to do. However, you should strive to be someone who works hard and knows how to ask for what you want. The worst that can happen is someone might say no. If that happens, dont be discouraged. Just say, Oh well and move on.

There is an old saying that asks, Who is rich? with the answer being, He who is satisfied with his lot.

This doesnt mean to limit yourself and not dream at all, but just reminds us how important it is to appreciate what we have every day.

Dont be afraid to ask for what you want and make your dreams a reality!

This Friday, March 19, the Greater Atlantic City Jaycees and Atlantic City Weekly are having the 6th annual Top 40 Under 40 celebration at Borgatas MIXX nightclub. I love this project and event because so many deserving people in our area will be recognized for the many things they do, includ-ing their contributions to their com-munity as well as their leadership and entrepreneurship skills. As an honoree in 2008, I know that this honor has certainly changed my life and gave me a boost of confidence as I am sure this has done for many other past and current honorees. I want to say con-gratulations to everyone who will be honored because you all deserve it! n

Dishing out advice on var-ious topics to our read-ers on issues related to networking, dating, em-ployment, news, events, shopping and much more. She is the current presi-dent of the Greater Atlantic City Jaycees and owner of www.GoToWhitney.com.

Readers Weigh in with Favorite ShowBy David J. Spatz

    see more online @

SE V E R A L W E E K S A G O , I answered my most frequently-asked question What was the best show youve ever seen? by not answering it because it would be impossible for me to single out just one performance.

Instead, I cited two shows that had a lasting impression of the more than 6,000 Ive seen during the past 32 years (Frank Sinatra in 1988, Paul McCartney in 2002).

Then I asked you to chime in and tell me your best or favorite Atlantic City shows. Between responses to the column on the Atlantic City Weekly Web site, e-mails, mes-sages sent to my Facebook page and even one from the produce aisle of the Somers Point ShopRite, I received a diverse cross-section of artists that reflects the broad demographic of people who live, work, play and visit Atlantic City. (By the way, if youre not a Facebook friend, just search for [email protected]).

Here are a few comments that either piqued my interest or sent me on a trip down Memory Lane, with my occasional comments in italics:

From TFM: ... unlike you I can name

the best Glenn Millers big band. Second place all the other big bands. Im 84 so [I] have a wealth of material to draw from. Best singer? No contest The Voice (Frank Sinatra). I caught him in 1941 with Tommy Dorsey.

From Joel: Sammy Davis Jr. with the Ringo Starr All Starr Band at the Grand wasnt bad either.

Interesting, Joel. I saw Sammy at the Grand many times, both in the intimate Opera House and once in the outdoor venue. I also remember Ringos debut under the stars at the Grand, not only for the great show, but because Ringo was the first (and still the only) Beatle I ever met. But Sammy performing with Ringos band? I dont remember Sammy doing a walk-on during Ringos show.

From Nathan B: The best show I ever saw ... was the New York Philharmonic at Resorts, late 70s, I believe.

That certainly was a memorable musi-cal moment in Atlantic City, Nathan. Im pretty sure it was during the winter of 1980. Resorts was experimenting with alternatives

to the traditional casino showroom fare, andit was an amazing sight 60-some musi-cians, jammed onto the stage of the SuperstarTheatre and performing under the baton of itsworld-renowned conductor, Zubin Mehta.

From Pete C: George Carlin when he made his comeback after one of his heart attacks.

LOL, Pete. I remember that one like it wasyesterday. George hadnt performed in aboutnine months, and he chose the Sands to easehis way back into touring. He came on stagewith a handful of index cards Id neverseen him bring written material onto thestage. And then he proceeded to deliver thesingle, funniest opening line Ive ever heardfrom any comedian. Carlin being Carlin, Icant repeat it here, but it had something todo with women who are anti-abortion.

From RunningOnEmpty: ... thefirst time Jackson Browne performed in Atlantic City.

Again, another show at the old GrandstandUnder the Stars. What made that one so mem-orable wasnt so much that it was JacksonsAtlantic City debut. Near the end of the show,4,400 people got the surprise of a lifetime whenJacksons good buddy, Bruce Springsteen, casu-ally strolled onto the stage and jammed withhis friend. It was Springsteens first andso far only appearance on a casino stage, although The Boss has turned in a couple ofkiller shows at Boardwalk Hall.

From BeachBaby: No doubt about it, the most memorable show ever in Atlantic City was in 1983 when theBeach Boys performed on the beach on Independence Day.

Hard for me to argue against that, Baby.Americas Band, on Americas Birthday, inAmericas Playground with 300,000 oftheir closest fans jammed onto the sand.Thank you, James Watt! n

Kelis, the R&B singer best known for her hits Milkshake and Bossy, will be per-forming at mur.mur nightclub at the Borgata this Saturday, March 20. The show starts at 10pm and features music by Ross One and OB-One. Kelis newest single Acapella just recently hit No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs Chart. This newest hit was released in anticipation of her upcoming album FleshTone, due out on May 4. The extended break between albums, almost four years, can be easily explained by Kelis divorce proceedings from her husband, rap-per Nas, which began while she was seven months pregnant with the couples first son, Knight. Rather than choose between her family and her career, Kelis actually found her son to be her new muse when she was writing Acapella. She writes on her Web site that, I was asked if I would ever put another album out. I suppose people assumed after the baby and divorce and all the time I took off ... that it would be on to motherhood for me ... and, well, thats true. When asked by fans, Kelis always maintained that her newest work was coming soon. But now she says, I signed a new deal and Im madly in love with life and ready to share something with you. The same level of confidence in her work is shared by hip-hop artist Will.i.am, whose own record label Will.i.am Music Group is releasing FleshTone. He was recently quoted in an interview with VIBE as saying, I would like Kelis to show shes an international sensation. She can be big. A lot of people think big is being on the radio or that being big is having a show in London, France and sometimes Japan. But that aint international ... thats just three coun-tries. The Black Eyed Peas are big; the Black Eyed Peas are international. I think Kelis can be that big. As big as the Peas. Will.i.am went on to say that Kelis could even surpass his own level of fame. A lot of time rappers have these labels and they dont let their artist become bigger than them. Ive proven thats not me. Fergie is huge. When Fergie blew up she was bigger than me! I believe Kelis can do the same. Jon Heacock

    MISS MILKSHAKE NIGHTLIFE SPOTLIGHT

Honoring the HonoreesBeing named one of the Top 40 Under 40 brings humility, pride and a long string of congratulations from old friends and new.By Michael Pritchard

    see more online @

SO YOUVE JUST BEEN TOLD THAT youve been selected as one of the Top 40 under 40 by the Greater Atlantic City Jaycees and Atlantic City Weekly. You now join an exclusive club of business people, community leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals and all-around movers and shakers in southern New Jersey.

Heres pretty much how the experience goes according to our honorees for the 6th Annual 2010 awards.

First comes some shock. Shock with a dash of humility, that is.

At first I thought it was a joke, says Steven Gallagher, emergency medi-cal technician for AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. I mean, why me? Im no one special. In fact, the reality of

the event still eludes me. The honor of being in such an elite group of active members of society, of my peers ... In one word: wow!

A very typical reaction from the win-ners, though a few were more surprised than others.

I had never heard of the Top 40 under 40 before I received the e-mail con-gratulating me on being chosen, says Tobiellen Care, pro-gram director for the Alcove Center for Grieving Children & Families. I grew up around here and cant believe I had never heard about it before ... and have to say I was embar-rassed. I love my job and I am passion-ate about the work I do. However, I am not sure I deserve to be highlighted in this paper.

For the honorees, however, their nomi-nations arent up to them, but rather come from their peers and colleagues in

the community. That leads to a little bit of pride that somebody (and sometimes several people) thought enough of you to put in your name. For some who knew they were nominated ahead of time (many nominators keep their identity a secret) they get a quick call of thanks.

Then comes the call to mom/spouse/kids/family and best friends to let them know.

Now at this point, you might think thats pretty much the end of it a few handshakes, a little basking in the glow, your picture in Atlantic City Weekly, apretty cool party at Borgatas MIXX that all the honorees are looking forward to.

Its not even close. After six years and now 240 honorees,

the prestige of the annual list continues to grow. And thanks to the Internet and social network sites, word starts to spreadpretty fast. Then the congratulations startto come in.

Ive received sev-eral e-mails congratu-lating me and wel-coming me to the ranks, says Stephanie Carr, director of edu-cation programs for Absecon Lighthouse. But I was most sur-prised by the reac-tions on my Facebook announcementthough. Lots of old high-school friendssent their wishes and kudos and its niceto know that those friends still care, eventhough I havent seen most of them inalmost 20 years.

In fact, according to many honorees, winning a Top 40 Under 40 slot brings you into more contact with old friendsthan many of those class reunion sites.

They are all reallyexcited, says NicoleZacchi, conventionservices manager forthe A.C. Convention& Visitors Authority. If you are a local, it issomething that peoplelook for every year,
