    Snowman Potholder

Designed by Jessie McKitrick, Copyright 2008

My aunt is very fond of snowmen, and I wanted to make something practical but cute for

her for Christmas. After playing around with a few ideas, it finally occurred to me that I

could simply use the snowmans head as the potholder itself, and I was pleased to see thisfellows big grin when I fastened off the last stitch. This pattern creates two circles,

which are joined together in a double-thickness to form a 20 cm diameter round

    potholder.

    Materials:

Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, White, 2 skeins (note, the pattern uses very little of the

second skein). This yarn is worsted weight, 73 metres and 50 g per skein.Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, Orange, 1 skein (note: I couldnt find orange cotton, so I

used a variegated skein and cut and restarted it whenever it became white or yellow. I

hope others will either find orange cotton, or consider dying a few metres of the white tosave a lot of hassle.)

Filati Fantasia Carezza Black Cotton, 1 skein (a few metres)

4.25 Crochet hook, or as appropriate for the yarn you are using.

Gauge: As long as the stitches are tight enough to make a fairly stiff fabric, but not so

tight as to cause difficulties when forming the stitches, you should be fine.

    Abbreviations:

    ch: chain

    sc: single crochetW: white

    O: orangeB: black

Notes: Following the pattern too rigidly in spacing the increases may result in apronounced hexagonal shape rather than round; if this is happening, then you may wish

to vary the placement of increases over the last two or three rounds, which I find rounds

out the shape nicely (for instance, 1 sc in first four stitches, 2 in next, *1sc in firstfourteen stitches, 2 in next* until last 10; put 1 sc in each of these [96 sc]). I found that Ihad to keep checking my work on the front to make sure that the colour changes hadntdistracted me from making increases, so if something seems a bit off, its worth doing a

    quick count of the stitches.

    Pattern:

    Back:

    1. Using magic loop method1 and the white cotton, make 6 sc. Do not join; work

proceeds in spiral. Place a stitch marker to keep track of where the round begins andends.

    2. 2 sc in each stitch. (12 sc)

    3. *1sc in first stitch, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (18 sc)

    4. *1sc in first two stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (24 sc)

    5. *1sc in first three stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (30 sc)6. *1sc in first four stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (36 sc)

    7. *1sc in first five stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (42 sc)

    8. *1sc in first six stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (48 sc)

    9. *1sc in first seven stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (54 sc)

    10. *1sc in first eight stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (60 sc)

    11. *1sc in first nine stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (66 sc)12. *1sc in first ten stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (72 sc)

    13. *1sc in first eleven stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (78 sc)

    14. *1sc in first twelve stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (84 sc)

    15. *1sc in first thirteen stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (90 sc)

    16. *1sc in first fourteen stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (96 sc)17. *1sc in first fifteen stitches, 2 in next* repeat for remainder of round (102 sc)

    18. Slip-stitch in next stitch or two to smooth out circle, and fasten off.

    Front:

Proceed as for back, starting with orange yarn, making the following colour changes:

    Nose:

    1. and 2.: Orange (6-12 stitches)3. Orange 14, White 4 (18 sc)

    4. W 14, O 4, W 6 (24 sc)5. W 19, O 3, W 8 (30 sc)

1If you are not familiar with the magic loop method for beginning a round project, you may simply ch 2,

then make 6 sc in the second stitch from hook to begin.
