EDITORIAL 03

The extremely good start to the year in 2016 is largely due to the success achieved in the prior year, when we delivered more than 2,000 snowmaking machines for the first time. This figure seems even more significant when we look back on how much we have accomplished with our employees throughout the rather short history of our company. Our entire team works with great dedication, devotion, and passion every day and continually focuses on the well-being and success of the company.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our special thanks to the LEITNER Group that we have been a part of since 2012. which made this successful start possible. The brand’s international network and global prominence, as well as its financial support, opened important doors for us into the snowmaking sector and allowed us and our sister companies to join forces to become the world’s first one-stop shop for winter technologies. We only manufacture snowmaking systems that we can be proud of, and the long-term foundations we lay allow the company to achieve sustainable growth through our extensive research and development activities and the important and indispensable measures we take to ensure a successful future. Numerous new and longstanding partnerships with our customers are increasing our competitiveness and ensuring our mutual success through the development of technologically advanced products and services. Our position as a global market player makes us a valued partner for countless ski resorts both in Austria and around the world.

These key factors have enabled us to transform a group of indivi- duals into a winning team, whose members display a high degree of expertise and are not afraid to take on personal responsibility. The respect we have earned is a result of the respect we have shown to the people we work with both internally and externally. A pleasant working environment, respectful behavior, and our clear identity as a part of the Leitner Group, make Demaclenko a company that is ready for a successful future.

As well as working in its traditional business fields, Demaclenko has recently been spon-soring important, major events to gain even greater visibility for the brand. In light of this, we were in attendance in Silvretta Montafon when the snowboard cross riders and stars of the ski cross scene competed for coveted World Cup points.

A total of 60,000 cubic meters of snow was produced for the AUDI FIS Ski Cross and Snowboard Cross World Cup race in Silvretta Montafon. The greatest challenge we faced was the tight time frame of November 21–29, 2015 when the temperatures were cold

enough to produce snow. Coordinated by Nick Roma from White Industries, 30 snow guns, 3 snow groomers with drivers and 6 shapers were hard at work until December 15 preparing the track to the best possible standard for the Montafon World Cup. “Thanks to the expansion of our snowmaking system by our reliable partner Demaclenko, we were very optimistic that we could pro-duce enough snow despite the short window of time. Snowmaking machines must be all the more powerful when time is pressing, and the Leica iCON alpine 3D snow depth measurement system gave us complete con-fidence in our abilities. Together with

our snowmaking system, this ensured our World Cup was a success,” explains Markus Büchel from the Montafon World Cup organizing committee.

For Demaclenko, sponsoring this event was a welcome change from our day-to-day work, and a positive indication of our excellent working relationship with the Silvretta Montafon ski resort in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. We are very excited about which major event awaits us next, and are already raring to go to support our clients at further important occasions.

NEWS 05

Our successful partnership with arguably the most famous ski resort in the world continued in 2015, emphasis primarily being placed on extending and renovating the existing snowmaking systems, including the pumping station and snow guns. Everything was in place for the new season to get off to a flying start at the beginning of December. After a long autumn, many skiers were extremely excited about discovering the countless new highlights awaiting them on ski slopes covering more than 200 km. In the run-up to the start of the 2015/16 winter season, the total of over 150 Titan 2.0 and Eos snow guns supplied to the ski resort did an excellent job of laying the ground-work for the first turns to be carved in the snow. However, the new

8-seater Premium Chair built by LEITNER ropeways proved the star attraction during the opening celebration.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our special thanks to Josef Burger, Managing Director of Bergbahn Kitzbühel AG, who was highly committed to supporting us every step of the way during our projects, and whose cooperation is of benefit to the entire company. We would also like to thank the team at Bergbahn Kitzbühel AG for the confidence they placed in us, and we hope to continue working with them long into the future together with our sister company LEITNER ropeways.

Managing a ski area as large and extensive as the one in Kitzbühel has long since become anything but child’s play. The demands and requirements of resort guests’ increase every year – from the very first wintry days, they want to be able to enjoy perfectly groomed slopes all the way down to the valley. Over the past few years, Kitzbühel has increasingly become a type of reference ski resort that stands for high quality skiing in the midst of breathtaking mountain scenery. In addition, the strategy employed by the Kitzbühel brand frequently cited as a best practice example. The 173 km of ski slopes in Kitzbühel, which get numerous skiers’ hearts racing 155 days a year, must always be in perfect shape. Technical snowmaking systems play a major role for both resort managers and visitors in ensuring such perfection even during difficult and unpredictable skiing seasons such as the one this year. “Even this year, we were able to create the required outstanding conditions, which led to a 4.3% increase in overnight stays in Kitzbühel in November and December, even as such overnight stays unfortunately declined in the state of Tyrol as a whole,“ says Josef Burger with visible pride, but also with a certain sense of responsibility. The various expansion stages the resort has gone through also led to a continual increase in workforce numbers: The last few years have seen the gradual formation of a competent team of experts with extensive experience and an attitude that reflects the contemporary passion for skiing. This team brilliantly overcomes all of the challenges it faces. If you want to be a master at snowmaking, you need to be willing to work hard – but you also need to have the right infrastructure and the right partners whose professionalism and expertise ensure that customer requirements can be met at any time.“We can expect to receive reliable products from a well-known company – but that’s not the only thing we’re interested in. What we really like about Demaclenko are the company’s outstanding employees. They make helpful sugge-stions and are always there when you need them. One time we even needed six additional snow guns at extremely short notice for the Hahnenkamm Races on New Year’s Day, and a team from Demaclenko

showed up within three hours. This type of service is not a given with every company – but for us it’s very important.” This is how Josef Burger describes his experience with Demaclenko. Dr. Burger has not forgotten the rough start to this year’s ski season caused by a lack of natural snow. There are a total of 143 snowmaking machines from Demaclenko currently ensuring optimal conditions on the slopes in Kitzbühel, with 120 of the machines operating in the Brunn section of the ski area. The Brunn project is based on a balanced overall concept and is located di-rectly in the core ski area of Hahnenkamm-Pengelstein. “The expansion of the Brunn-Pengelstein section is like the creation of a new dimension of the quality that already exists here. With the new 8-seater chairlift from LEITNER, an all-new snowmaking system from Demaclenko, and the integration of a deep powder piste as a black run, we have succeeded in enlarging the main ski area by 57 acres, or 7.3 kilometers of ski slopes.” It was particularly important for Kitzbühel to have the right partner for such an extensive project. Josef Burger confirms that “Demaclenko won us over because of several important factors: “The technology is very advanced and the snowmaking machines are totally efficient. The advice and assistance we get from the planning stage all the way to the first centimeter of snow is reliable and backed by extensive knowledge. In addition, Demaclenko is a partner that takes care of everything from a single source. We’ve tested a lot of equipment – but the snowmaking machines from Demaclenko were consistently the best performing; they made a very convincing impression with the best snowmaking perfor-mance at marginal temperatures, the best throwing range, the best snow quality, the best water flow rate, optimal energy efficiency, and an outstanding energy balance,” is how Burger sums it all up. As we said at the beginning, it is not easy to successfully guide a ski area like the one in Kitzbühel through all the ups and downs of the ski resort business. However, if you have the right team and the right partner to back you up, you can offer winter guests virtually unlimited skiing enjoyment, as they have been doing in Kitzbühel for quite some time – which is why everyone keeps coming back for more.

IN 2014/15, ENGADIN ST. MORITZ MOUNTAINS AG BUILT THE LARGEST SNOW RESERVOIR IN SWITZERLAND AT 2,525 METERS ABOVE SEA LEVEL. IT HAS A CAPACITY OF AROUND 400.000M3 WITH A WATER SURFACE AREA OF APPROxIMATELY 50,000 M2. ONE OF THE REASONS FOR TACKLING THIS UNPRECEDENTED PROJECT WAS TO PREPARE FOR THE 2017 FIS ALPINE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ST. MORITZ, WHERE THE ORGANIZERS HOPE TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR STAGING A CLIMATE-NEUTRAL COMPETITION.

During the project presentation, Adrian Jordan, Technical Director at Engadin St. Moritz Mountains AG, updated us on the progress of the project, and spoke about his experiences of working with Demaclenko. The majority of the work was concluded in 2015 and, with the exception of a few finishing touches that should be completed in summer 2016, the new snowmaking system was ready in time for the start of the 2015/16 winter season. In addition to improving the life-cycle assessment performance, the Lej Alv reservoir is of course playing a significant role in boosting the efficiency of the snowmaking system, which covers 160 of the resort’s 200 hectares of slopes, and requires around 800,000 m3 of water.

”A FEW yEARS AGO WE LAUNCHED AN EXTENSIVE PROJECT TO EXPAND OUR SNOWMAKING SySTEM - THIS UNDERTAKING BECAME ALL THE MORE IMPORTANT WHEN WE WERE AWARDED THE 2017 FIS ALPINE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS.“

Images of the newly constructed Demaclenko pumping station

What does the current project initiated for the 2017 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships entail? How large is the contract?”In recent years, we have seen that being able to guarantee snow is a crucial part of our business. This is why a few years ago we launched an extensive project to expand our snowmaking system and construct a reservoir. It goes without saying that this undertaking became all the more important when we were awarded the 2017 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. We originally identified five possible sites for constructing the reservoir, which was at this time intended to have a capacity of up to 450,000 m3. In 2010, we decided on the final location and the current size of 400,000 m3. Our chosen site is ideal because it does not require us to pump up any water into the reservoir. Instead, it is feasible for the man-made lake to be filled twice with meltwater alone. However, the snow reservoir is actually now being filled with water from the valley and meltwater. Once we had determined a location, it was time to get to work and choose the companies to implement the project for us. A budget of around 25 million Swiss francs was set aside for the project as a whole, which was made up of 20 to 25 sub-projects. We picked Demaclenko to take care of all our snowmaking needs, investing around 2.7 million Swiss francs in this aspect of the project.“

What were the particular requirements and challenges of the project?”The construction site logistics were managed very successfully and did not present any problems. In fact, the collaboration between all the parties involved was so good that everything ran very smoothly. Instead,

the real challenge lay in working at an altitude of 2,500 m, and dealing with the prevailing weather conditions.“

You’ve gained a lot of experience with Demaclenko’s products over the last few years and are now using the latest generation of the Titan 2.0. What are your impressions of this new generation of products?”We are using the new Demaclenko machines on the World Cham-pionship slope, where we were previously relying on snow generators that were many years old. Here, the advantages of the new equipment are plain to see. For example, the modern machinery is significantly more powerful at marginal temperatures and, as already mentioned, the Titan Silent produces considerably less noise. Actually we are going to order other Titan this year.“

The 2015/16 winter season got off to a very difficult start with the conditions remaining challenging as the season progressed – how have Demaclenko’s snow generators proved their worth?”They’ve really hit the mark. In fact, our investment came at just the right time. We normally experience winters with little snowfall around once every ten years but we haven’t had such a difficult winter for 20 years. Overall, the project has had an extremely powerful impact, and it’s fair to say that our investment has saved the winter season. I’m in no doubt that without Demaclenko’s products, we would only have been able to open half the number of slopes that we did.“

THE SCHULTZ GROUP IS A FAMILY-RUN COMPANY AND THE BIGGEST PRIVATE ROPEWAY OPERATOR IN AUSTRIA. IT IS ALSO ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NEW CUSTOMERS DEMACLENKO SUCCEEDED IN ACqUIRING LAST YEAR. WE MET WITH THE OWNER OF THE COMPANY, HEINZ SCHULTZ, IN HIS OFFICE TO TALK TO HIM ABOUT THIS PAST SEASON AND THE NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH DEMACLENKO.

You have been operating six ski resorts in Tyrol and Carinthia as a family-owned company for 40 years now. These are your main resort, Ski- optimal Hochzillertal in Kaltenbach, the Mallnitz/Ankogel ski resort, the Großglockner Resort Karls-Matrei, the Mölltaler Gletscher resort, the Sillian Hochpustertal Ski Center, and the St. Jakob Ski Center in Defereggental. In which of these did you make massive upgrades to your snowmaking equipment for the current 2015/16 winter season?”We took such measures primarily at Ski-optimal Hochzillertal, at the Großglockner Resort Karls-Matrei, and at the Sillian Hochpustertal Ski Center. We carried out snowmaking activities at all of these resorts, but the knowledge we gained during the 2014/2015 winter season made it clear that we would have to improve our technical snowmaking operations. More specifically, we were looking to optimize efficiency and shorten the snowmaking process. We now have snowmaking coverage of at least 90%.“ Why did you rely exclusively on top products from Demaclenko for the expansion and upgrade of your snowmaking equipment?”We conducted extensive tests last winter and we were convinced by the technology as a whole, the value for money, and the performance offered by the Demaclenko snow guns. Sustainability aspects and the good spare parts availability also impressed us. For these reasons, we decided to purchase

230 snow generators; all of them are either Titan 2.0 propeller machines or EOS lances.“ How has the technical snowmaking equipment from Demaclenko performed this winter season?”Our experience this season confirms the results of our tests and analysis – we have been able to produce snow very well across large areas. We achieved minimum coverage on our main slopes in three days. This is one of the reasons we have been able to maintain our visitor numbers, and in some months even increase them, throughout this difficult winter season.“ How satisfied have you been with the assistance and service you have received from Demaclenko up until now?”Everything has gone very well. There were still some calibration issues that had to be settled in the winter, but everything was taken care of and all of our requirements have been met.“

What would the current winter season have been like at your ski resorts if you had not upgraded your snowmaking equipment?”It definitely would not have been as good. After all, our guests come here to ski in the winter, and they expect to find white and well-groomed slopes when they arrive.“

After unveiling our new Eos snow lance to the public for the first time at Interalpin over a year ago, we immediately received extremely positive feedback on Demaclenko’s new generation of lances. The new Eos, which is now being produced for the first time with up to eight regulating steps, boasts a number of impressive technical innovations without dispensing with the tried-and-tested highlights of the previous model. For example, the new nucleators and nozzles with their stainless steel inserts enable the product to perform signifi-cantly better when confronted with any external influences, making the snow lance even more resistant than before. The biggest change to its predecessor is surely the new feature of eight regulating steps, which is available as both a fully automatic and manual model. The numerous configuration options mean that the product can be tailored to our clients’ requirements even better than before as well as offering a high degree of flexibility and a number of possible applications. While the previous model was sometimes only able to produce a reduced amount of snow the new snow lance is very powerful, especially during rapid fluctuations in temperature thanks to the 8 steps regulation. A further important technical feature is the excellent water flow rate, which can now reach a flow rate of up to 6,1 l/s. The new lance head was produced with a smaller volume and surface area, which in turn has made it less vulnerable to wind and weather. This also means that the formation of ice on the head in the most adverse weather conditions for snowmaking is now a thing of the past. The extremely positive values plotted on the optimized production curve illustrate how the snow lance boasts the best ratio between snow quality and energy consumption. The product’s oil-free compressor consumes just 1.5 kW of energy, and continues to be one of the most efficient and high-quality solutions on the market.Since 2016, the lance rod has been equipped with a force-ventilated weather station as well as a new ball joint that enables the lance to rotate into all possible positions without having to unhinge the water hose. The fully automatic and manual versions are produced and delivered in the A1–A8 and M1–M8 designs respectively. While the Eos A8 is the most powerful of all the designs, the Eos M1 impresses users with its high level of flexibility and easy operation. The water module in the Eos 8 is now directly installed in the lance rod, and in designs 1–4 can continue to be directly connected to the pit.The electronics system used in Eos has also undergone a number of developments. The completely upgraded control software was developed entirely by the Demaclenko team. It now features a new, simplified graphical user interface with a 7-inch TFT color display and a WiFi connection for remote control via an app. The new system includes also real-time measurement of energy and electricity consumption, voltage and water temperature. The pressure regulation feature and extended diagnostics menu round off the range of features offered by this completely unique product.

A further significant product launch in 2016 is the redesigned Titan Silent, which now uses the same technology as the Titan 2.0. Its benefits include the ability to attain a considerably longer throwing range and an increased flow rate at the same level of energy consumption. The nozzle ring and nucleators have also been adapted to the new generation Titan. The truly innovative development, however, can be found in the new barrel, which has been fitted with an impeller designed by Demaclenko. By applying new aspects of aerodynamics, greater resistance can be achieved during extreme weather conditions, significantly increasing the quantity of snow produced per hour compared with the previous model. Before being fitted with these innovations, the Titan S was known on the market for its extremely low noise emissions, which have been reduced even further in the 2016 model. To achieve these outstandingly low noise levels, the R&D team consulted fields such as aviation technology when designing the new blade shape. Instead of being straight, the ends of the blades are now slightly bent. The application of winglet technology has enabled the product to run even more quietly, which is particularly advantageous when producing snow in residential areas.

The Titan 2.0 Silent adapts perfectly to the natural conditions, making it the ideal snow gun for use in the heart of unspoiled nature.

The Evo 3.0 has enriched Demaclenko’s range of compact products. The new barrel has extended the product’s throwing range, while the new components in the upgraded nozzle ring have transformed the snow gun into the ideal partner for pro-ducing snow even in the most adverse weather conditions and at lower temperatures than ever before. The fan, which consumes a total of just 11 kW, has also been modernized. To fulfill increasing customer demands for an energy-efficient yet high-quality propeller machine, we decided to launch the Evo 3.0 to offer clients a very versatile product with low energy consumption that draws on the same top-quality, cutting-edge technology as the Titan 2.0, which remains the company’s best seller due to these very characteristics. Above all, the Evo 3.0 is a compact snow gun that conserves resources and combines skillfully designed innovative technology with economic efficiency. However, when developing the Evo 3.0, emphasis was predominantly placed on the new electrical cabinet, which uses a power electronics system programmed especially for Demaclenko to control the complete operation of the compact propeller machine. The force-ventilated weather station and the new 7-inch touch screen, which has the option of being controlled using a compatible smartphone or tablet, round off the wide range of features offered by the upgraded Evo. Like the previous model, the Evo 3.0 is available with or without a compressor as an automatic or manual version, and can be installed on a fixed or winch tower.

A year on from our successful entry into the French market, our expectations of an extremely positive launch of opera-tions in the country have been completely fulfilled. Our new facility in Montmelian and the close collaboration with our sister company LEITNER France have already enabled the team led by Technical Director Franck Tiffreau to implement a number of projects and to establish itself as a competent partner in France. Last year, when expanding or renovating their snowmaking systems, more than 23 French ski resorts placed their trust in Demaclenko’s expertise and the cutting-edge technology used in its products. As a result, over 70 Demaclenko snow guns now create outstanding slope conditions in the French mountains.

After ski resort operators conducted numerous tests last year to verify the performance of Demaclenko’s propeller machines, we succeeded in impressing French clients with the quality of our snow. Due to the very long periods of little snowfall last winter in particular, the start of the season was also extremely difficult for many French ski resort operators. However, by providing efficient and innovative solutions for fully covering the slopes in snow, the entry of Demaclenko into the market came at just the right time to ensure that the winter season was still a success.

2016 has already given us an indication of the positive developments to come, confirming that Demaclenko has very quickly succeeded in establishing itself in France as a leading company for powerful, high-quality snowmaking systems.

NEW PRODUCTION SITE IN TELFS To BenefiT BoTh oUr companies anD clienTs

Besides the factors we have already mentioned, our outstanding results last year can be attributed to our new production site in Telfs, Austria. The plant, which was opened as a production site for LEITNER/ HTI group and PRINOTH in 2008, is now being expanded for the second time. Demaclenko’s new production premises in Telfs enable the company to continue contributing to the economic progress of the Group. Furthermore, the shorter production processes allow us to fulfill our clients’ requirements in the shortest possible time. During the groundbreaking ceremony held a few months ago, the company marked the start of construction of the new extension, which is due to be completed in summer 2016. By increasing our core technical competencies and producing important central components for the global market, the expansion of the Telfs production site will result in the location playing a key role in the group of companies. For Demaclenko, the Telfs site is gradually developing into a strategic hub for the entire Tyrolean region, allowing all three companies in the LEITNER/ HTI Group to maintain even closer contact with their large number of clients in the Alpine region.

“‘The best come out on top’ – this not only applies to us as a ski resort, but to our suppliers of snow-making equipment and ropeway technology. ‘Kitz loves skiing’ isn’t just a slogan – it’s our guiding principle. And to stay true to this principle, we need the best possible slopes. Since we began making snow in the 1990s, we’ve gained experience with many suppliers and now operate a wide variety of snow generators. However, as the demands on slope quality have continued to increase, so too have the requirements we place on our snow-making partners. During unusual weather conditions like those seen at the start of the

Before deciding to work with us, Heinz Schultz, the owner of several ski resorts and ropeways across Austria, gained a very detailed under-standing of our company, and was extremely impressed with the quality and performance of our products. Since the period given to optimally cover the slopes in snow is becoming ever shorter, it is essential that the time frame available is used efficiently. This was the main reason why the Schultz Group opted for the most powerful snow guns on the market in order to fulfill their objective of providing visitors to their ski resorts with perfect slope conditions. In addition to supplying the four ski resorts (Hochzillertal, Kals am Großglockner, Matrei and Sillian) with various designs of the Titan 2.0, Demaclenko installed the first Eos lances, which, among other features, stand out thanks to their very low energy consumption. In ski resorts of a certain size in particular, energy-efficient snow production makes an important contribution to the success of a profitable season.

“Thanks to Demaclenko, we were able to open our ski resort on time, December 8 2015. If we hadn’t invested in modernizing and increasing the performance of our snowmaking system, we couldn’t have opened our 25 km of slopes to skiers before Christmas. As a ski resort operator, we decided to work with Demaclenko because the company was able to demonstrate that it has the best price, performance and quality ratio.”

Val senales glacier caBle car companyAnyone looking to achieve a top level of performance in their chosen sport needs to train in the best possible conditions. This was the guiding principle behind the project completed by Demaclenko at the Val Senales glacier. Last season, the resort once again extended its range of slopes by constructing a piste of around 600 m in length and 50 m in width directly alongside the actual location of the glacier. The new Leo Gurschler slope has a considerable gradient of approximately 62° and, thanks to the state-of-the-art snowmaking technology provided by Demaclenko, provides ideal snow conditions for demanding altitude training. From young talent to elite Alpine skiers, the popularity of the Val Se-nales glacier extends far beyond the borders of South Tyrol. Time and time again, visitors to the area are amazed by the outstanding winter sports conditions and breathtaking panoramic views.

With the support of Demaclenko’s snowmaking expertise, Powder Ridge is being re-developed into a popular full service year-round urban mountain sports park and resort. Located in Southern Connecticut, it claims to be the only full service mountain resort that is situated in an urban area with over 23 million people within a 150 km (90 mile) radius: the area of New york City and surroundings. Powder Ridge was established over 50 years ago and has long been “The place to learn to ski in Southern New England”. Today it is focused on free-style skiing, snowboarding and snow biking which has lessened the requirement for vertical height that is sought after by traditional downhillers. After supplying a number of EVO fan guns in 2013 and 2014.In 2015 Demaclenko has installed 100 of the new energy efficient EOS lances, which enabled Powder Ridge to increase its snowmaking potential dramatically while reducing its electric power consumption – a clear win-win situation for the company.

lillehammer - hafJellDemaclenko has also been hard at work on the international scene. One of its largest European projects with an investment volume of 5 million euros was undoubtedly the work performed in Hafjell, the venue hosting the Alpine events during the 2nd youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer. The snowmaking system in the third largest ski resort in Norway was updated to the latest technical standard last summer with the installation of more than 50 snow guns and over 80 concrete pits. The largest task of the now completed building work, which comprised several project stages, was without a doubt the construction of two new pumping stations with outputs of 4 x 90 kW and 4 x 315 kW respectively. The new generation of control software, snowvisual, which guarantees a user-friendly snowmaking procedure, ensures that the snow guns are kept well supplied with water.

PINK SNOW ON THE VAL SENALES GLACIER

fiVe million Viewers TUne inTo arD’s qUiz show “frag’ Doch mal Die maUs”

Elmar Pichler Rolle and Andreas Dorfmann were clearly delighted with the results of the experiment

The secret’s out – snow guns can also be used to make ice cream. During the Saturday night quiz show “Frag’ doch mal die Maus” (“Ask the Mouse”) on Germany’s national TV channel ARD, five million viewers discovered how engineers at the South Tyrolean company Demaclenko were able to spray strawberry-flavored granita into the air on the Val Senales glacier using a Titan X snow gun. Lab tests even confirmed that the ice cream was completely safe to eat! This unusual experiment was only set up to answer a question posed by a ten-year-old girl called Letizia, who wrote to ARD’s famous cartoon mouse to ask if a snow gun could also be used to make ice cream. ARD selected this clever and funny question from thousands of entries, and while searching for the answer, came upon both a company and ski resort in South Tyrol able to help. On condition that the results remained secret, the experiment was fil-med on the Val Senales glacier back in the middle of November, before the secret was finally revealed to an audience of millions on Saturday.

Demaclenko’s CTO Roland Demetz is more than happy with the results: “Our engineers dedicated a lot of time and energy to the pro-ject, and ultimately, after all their tinkering about, we have proven the high-quality of our work by producing an impeccable strawberry granita that even went down well with the children who came along to watch the filming in Val Senales.” It goes without saying that several modifications had to be made to the snow gun to produce the granita, including changes to the nozzles, water supply and other settings. Filming the TV report was a welcome change to the everyday work of Demaclenko and the Val Senales ski resort, both of which enjoyed media attention from the event. It waits to be seen whether the Managing Director of the Val Senales Glacier Cable Car Company, Elmar Pichler Rolle, actually allows a snow gun to be converted again so that skiing fans can lick strawberry granita from the slopes at special events in the future...
