His Word for Your Life
2018 brings many new opportunities into your
life– commercials are telling you what to focus on
for the new year, how to get the ‘most’ out of it,
etc. We make resolutions and try to look for ways
to improve. The elders here have gone out of their
way to find opportunities for us to grow, and offer-
ing every family a devotional guide called “His
Word” is a big part of that.
Reading 1 chapter each weekday and the cor-
responding devotional in “His Word” will carry us
through the New Testament this year.
To help keep us on the same page (or pag-
Petersville Church of Christ Weekly Bulletin ~ January 7, 2018
es…), I would like to give you some things to look
for in each week’s devotionals– questions to an-
swer as you read and meditate on God’s Word.
Consider these as you read Bart Warren’s
thoughts on Matthew 6-10:
Should we be engaging in ‘Secret Christianity’
the way he described it? Why or why not?
What are 2 of the most well-known and misun-
derstood sayings of Jesus? In what chapter can
both of them be found?
What is Jesus willing to do in Matthew 8, and
what should it motivate us to do today?
What 3 questions from Matthew 9 does Warren
ask us if we believe today? What is your re-
sponse?
Jesus called the 12 for a specific mission– but
he calls us today just the same. What does that
calling mean after reading the devotional?
Think about that, and you will be blessed!
With Love, Adam

The Little Burro
John Killinger retells this story from Atlantic Monthly about the days of the great western cattle ranches. A little burro sometimes would be harnessed to a wild steed. Bucking and raging, convulsing like drunken sailors, the two would be turned loose like Laurel and Hardy to proceed out unto the dessert range. They could be seen disap-pearing over the horizon, the great steed dragging that little burro along and throwing him about like a bag of cream puffs.
They might be gone for days, but eventually they would come back. The little burro would be seen first, trotting back across the horizon, leading the submissive steed in tow. Somewhere out there on the rim of the world, that steed would become exhausted from trying to get rid of the burro, and in that moment, the burro would take mastery and become the leader.
And that’s the way it is with the kingdom and its heroes, isn’t it? The battle goes to the determined, not the outraged; to the committed, not to those who are merely dramatic (cf. Luke 21:19; Romans 12:21; Matthew 23:34).
Applications:
(1) Parent dealing with a rebellious teen
(2) Spouse seeking to convert mate
(3) Christian overcoming bad habit
(4) Remaining faithful till death (Rev. 2:10)
Some battles are just too important to lose!

No Shortcut James A. Garfield, prior to serving as President of the United States, was president of Hiram College in Ohio. One day a father asked Garfield if there were a shortcut whereby his son could get through college in less than the usual four years. He wanted his son to get on with making mon-ey.
The College president gave this reply: “Of course there is a way; it all de-pends on what you want your boy to do. When God wants to grow an oak tree He takes 100 years. When He wants to make a squash, He only takes
two months. —Sermons.com newsletter
