BSSC Boardof DirectorsSki Report

With the Sun Valley group just getting back, Mid-Week Mammoth group leaving on 13th and the bus trip journeying to Mammoth on 24th, we have quite a few people going here and there skiing. In the next few months we will be talking about what our club needs for next year’s trips – mid-week, bus trips, and long distance trips. We need your input. Please contact Maxine Hanlon with ideas, comments and sug-gestions, and please offer to join in when the next Ski Committee is held, hopefully the end of March. Contact Maxine at [email protected]. Jackson Hole looks like a good bet with hopefully a great price. No decision has been made, but your ideas and input are needed. We have two more Mammoth trips, March mid-week ( March 6-11) and March bus trip the 17-20. Don’t miss out on the great snow. Sign up today.

NominationsPlease remember that April 5th is the night that directors and officers are nominated for the 2011-12 club year. It is time for you to join in and lift a hand. see Sallee Leslie and/or Nila Kyser to volunteer for next year’s Board.. Also being explored are several upgrades to the club’s by-laws such as removing the term limits for president, pro-viding e-mail votes on vital issues, and perhaps adding a way to increase dues by the Board by 5%. Contact Maxine Hanlon for any addiional thoughts about by-law changes.

Once again the Far West Ski Week at Sun Valley , Idaho was a super success. Forty Balboa Ski Club members spent six sun-filled days skiing on new snow. The conditions weren’t like Mammoth in January but the Sun Valley mountain crew did a superb job of making snow and grooming so it was perfect each day. Sun Valley Lodge is the place to stay... Great location, easy access to the mountains and perfect service. At Bald Mountain a number of our people found helpful mountain folk to carry skis, give directions and help anyone new to Sun Valley.

Sunday was a guided tour of the mountain and reception with dancing and, of course, Red Lipper, Gayle Zierhat, Kathy Yeargin, Christy Walchli, Maxine Hanlon, Dave Wat-kins, Linda Mosier, Dan and Christina Moritz all danced up a storm.

Christina Moritz and Luba Dymktry spent a long day cross-country skiing on the trails around the base of Bald Moun-tain. Dan Mortiz also went snow shoeing with Christina and said it was quite a different experience from downhill skiing! Dollar Mountain saw Linda Mosier, Barbara Jacobsen, and Nina Winn exploring the slopes. Bill Clark lost his read-ing glasses, and when asking Maxine Hanlon at a moun-tain eatery was helped by Sitzmarkers who guided him to his “lost” glasses. This was after an hour or so of hunting. Thanks Sitzmarkers! Monday there was a pub crawl in the town of Ketchum. Drew Young and Pennie Jones partied along with new member Greg Rund, Linda Moisier, and Sheila Van Guil-der. Quite a few people ended up at the famous Pioneer Saloon afterwards for big steak dinners, buffalo burgers and artichokes.

Tuesday Night was our Council party, organized by our Or-ange Council V. P. of Travel Sheila Van Guilder, was held at the Sun Valley Inn. We had delicious pasta, Caesar sal-ads and lots of wine! It was fun to get together to see what each of us had been doing on the trip so far — nice spot

and good food. After the dinner, the group met up with other Council party people at the Duchin Bar in Sun Valley Lodge to continue the camaraderie..... This bar was very popular all week and an easy spot to hook up with other club council and Far West people.

On Wednesday night in the Sun Room at The Lodge, overlook-ing the ice rink, there was an impromptu gathering. Ken Muzzy, Rick Harrington, Art Pressel and Corine Ghosn were a few who sang along to Ernie Minney’s ukulele Ship-sailor-mermaid bal-lad. Wednesday and Thursday were the race days with many Bal-boa members bringing home medals. Special thanks and con-gratulations to Rick Harrington , Dave Mashaw (was #2 Man of week), Art Pressel, Jess Gorman , Greg Rund, Rick Koenig, Jim Hughes (won #3 Man of the week), Bob Engemann, Christy Walchli, Maxine Hanlon .and our newest snowboard member Ali-Harley-Gart with two gold metals, slalom and giant slalom. Greg, Bob E, and Ali were all first time racers..

Because of the special effort of these people, Balboa brought home the overall club racing award of ski week – “The Joe Ross Award” with 350 points. Congratulations to all.

At our February 1st meeting, in addition to sharing “tales of Sun Valley”, Joe Ross’ son, Sandy Ross (a young 89, and thinking about skiing again), was present to wish us a hearty well-done.

Sun Valley Trip ReviewSun Valley Trip Review

Page 5: Snojob March 2011

Sandy is a friend of Joe Stanczyk and mentioned that his Dad’s favorite ski area was Sun Valley. Joe Ross died 25 years ago. According to the Far West web site, our Sun Valley victory is the first time a Southern California club has won since 1995. Wednesday night was an ice skating party at the Sun Valley Lodge outdoor ice rink. Peter Jones and Red Lipper skated over an hour with only one of them falling. A large group of people enjoyed the great Mike Murphy—- songs and jokes from a legend of Sun Valley not to be missed. Dave Wat-kins was one of the first in line, but it was so popular that the lines started before the doors opened and others were turned away.

Corine Ghosn, Cathy Yeargin, Gayle Zierhut and Ernie Min-ney took a day off and did some scouring of the local thrift shops and gained treasured items. Ernie is known for finding the hot shopping spots at each ski resort. Speaking of Ernie, he had a wonderful day as “the harem-host-with-the-most” escorting Luba Dmytryk, Feri Fathi, Azar Daneshbod and Karen Carter all over the mountain and entertaining them with his special charm. Thursday night was the end-of-the-trip dinner, with tasty prime rib dinner and dancing. The theme of the dinner was the 50’s and Pennie Jones and Drew Young dressed the part. Christina Moritz and Gayle Zierhut wore the “true” poodle skirts and saddle shoes, complete with petty-coats and neck scarves.

Friday night a group organized by Haiqui Aghajanian and Richard Pariseau boarded the new gondola for a wonder-ful firelight dinner at the Roundhouse Restaurant mid-mountain with a glorious starlight gondola ride back down. A number of people went on a horse-drawn sleigh ride to a cabin in the woods for dinner, complete with an accor-dion player. Unfortunately no wild foxes were spotted on the ride back. Maxine Hanlon, Sheila Van Guilder, Susan Corum, Linda Mosier, Nina Winn and Barbara Jacobsen enjoyed a final night of gourmet dining. There was so much to do and never enough time !!!! I’m looking forward to another active and fun-filled long week for Balboa skiers at 2012 Far West Ski Week in Jackson Hole, Wyoming! See you there!
