YOUTH  SQUAD SUPERVISOR Period of  Employment 

Summer 2012 (Start  date TBD ‐September 1) 

(Candidates will  be notified  of  any  modifications to employment   period.) Summer Employment Work Hours 

Tuesday 9 a.m.  – 5 p.m. 

Wednesday‐ Saturday 3:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. 

(Training Schedule in June TBD)

Program Overview 

The Summer

 Night

 Lights

 (SNL)

 program

 is

 an

 essential

 component

 of 

 the

 comprehensive

 citywide  gang  reduction  strategy  facilitated  by  the  Los  Angeles  Mayor’s  Office  of   Gang 

Reduction  and  Youth Development  (GRYD).  SNL  provides  extended  late night programming 

between the hours of  7 p.m. to midnight, 4 days a week, throughout the summer months. SNL 

delivers a coordinated effort to decrease the propensity for violence within communities that 

are most  impacted. SNL provides free extra‐curricular programming for the entire community 

including; sports, food, and arts & crafts. The program engages all stakeholders especially those 

who are potential victims and potential perpetrators of  violence.  SNL’s key partners include the 

City’s  Department  of   Recreation  and  Parks  (RAP)  and  the  Los  Angeles  Police  Department 

(LAPD). 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  Previous work experience with SNL and/or have completed  their Bachelors Degree or 

Degree  in human services related field and/or a minimum of  two years of  professional 

work  experience  in  a  related  position.  Flexible  Full‐time  availability  from  June  to 

September; 

  Must be available to work the program hours of  Tuesdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 

Wednesday through Saturday 3:30 p.m. ‐ 12:00 a.m. 

  Strong  leadership,  management,  communication,  organizational,  administrative  and 

time‐management skills; 

  Experience in providing direct supervision to youth/young adults. 

  Ability to

 work

 with

 diverse

 populations,

 problem

 solve,

 and

 work

 in

 a collaborative

 

manner; 

  Ability to be flexible and manage high stress situations in a calm and effective manner. 

  Ability to work as part of  a team that includes youth, city departments, community 

organizations, community peacemakers, and law enforcement. 

  Working knowledge of  Microsoft Office and daily access to personal email account. 

1 Earnings are taxed. Individual’s take home earnings are based on Form W‐4.

  Must have reliable transportation 

  Must be able to stand for long periods of  time and carry a minimum of  15 lbs. 

Primary Duties

 &

 Responsibilities

 

  Provide  shared  oversight  of   the  SNL  program  site  service  delivery  including  but  not 

limited to; 

  Ensure SNL site programming  is delivered nightly  in a  timely, effective and productive 

manner 

  Provide  extensive  community  outreach  to  stakeholders  on  the  various  programs  and 

services offered during SNL 

  Attend and participate fully in all SNL program meetings and planning sessions. 

  Lead  in  the  management  of   the  11  Youth  Squad,  including  modeling  appropriate 

behavior and professionalism. 

  Oversee YS during programming to ensure they are completing assigned tasks   Implement the Youth Squad Development Curriculum on a daily basis to Youth Squad 

members prior to nightly programming. 

  Perform additional duties as needed to ensure the successful delivery of  program and 

services at designated SNL site
