New faces at SNCby Tim Van Compel

Ambitious and curious, the latest crop of St.Norbert freshmen arrivedon Sunday, Aug. 29. Thestudents slashed theirparental ties to enter thenew world of college life, with hopes of completingthe i r e d u c a t ion andentering the employmentmarket.

Cast into an atmosphereof unfamiliar faces andplaces, the freshman mustadjust to a new way of life.Jon Schlafer, a pre-dentistry major fromAppleton, WI thinks it willbe easy to adjust. He feelsthat everyone is friendlyand willing to help. Thenewcomers were met withJong lines, books to buy, registration, and orien-tation programs, all ofwhich required a degree ofhelp from others. Jon islooking forward to achallenging, yet inter-esting, year.

The small, privatecollege surge appears to bedominant again this year.Approximately 480 newstudents are enrolled thissemester, out of the manythat applied. Julie Tremelof Rothschild, WI is one ofthem. She was attracted bythe small size of St. Norbertand the private schoolaspect. Being close toGreen Bay influenced heralso. She likes the freedomand independence thatcollege can offer.

Not surprisingly, mostfreshmen are impressedwith the cafeteria food. They feel it is good and thatthere is a nice variety.Complemented with a latenight snack of popcorn andHawaiian Punch withfriends, the new studentsfill their appetites withease. Most were shocked byhigh book bills. Dorm life isa change from home, but itsoon leads to new friendsand a chance for many in-

teresting experiences.Commuters must alsoadjust because new trans-portation needs must betaken care of.

The college was met witha flood of freshmen in theFinancial Accountingcourse, which f i l ledsections and led to two newones. The college isattempting a new systemfor required courses andtrying to give the freshmen, and future students, a betterand broader education.

St. Norbert College is aliberal arts school andaccording to Lisa Carnot, ofKaukauna, WI that is whyshe chose to go here. Shefee l s a l ibe ra l ar tseducation will be beneficialto her future career. Lisalikes the reputation of thecollege and its placementrecord upon graduation, aswell as the atmosphere ofthe college.

Freshmen bring new andcontinuing life to the

Main gets faceliftby David C. Ruby

The 1982-83 school yearis the first to witness a newand more professional-looking bookstore andmailroom. All summerlong, people have workedhard to provide better-looking and more efficientservices. Today we see thefinished product and knowthat the result is trulyworth the effort.

It all started when a StoreAdministration Board wasestablished by WilliamKomsi, Vice-President forBusiness and Finance. Theboard's job was to reviewoperation of the bookstoreand mailroom in order tofind ways to make themmore appealing and runmore efficiently, withprimary emphasis placedon having the textbooksready for the beginning ofthe school year. The boardconsists of David Quimby,Director of AuxiliaryServices; Eileen Finnerty,Director of PersonnelServices; Kenneth Smits,Controller of the College;and Mar lene W i n t e r ,Manager of the Bookstore. The boa rd p r o p o s e dchanges to the Adminis-trative Advisory Council, which were approved intheir entirety. After theproposals were approved,

James Beard, Director ofFacilities, drew up theplans and supervised thework. The board willcontinue to function for thepurpose of reviewing theprogress.

Many changes havetaken place in the book-store. The major changewhich took place was themoving of the textbooksoff the floor into theback room, thereby cre-ating more floor space.Clerk service has beenimplemen ted for thedistribution of books. In thefront of the store a glasswall was installed. The newglass wall will help withsecurity and create moredisplay space with theglass shelves. The outsidewindows were covered upmainly because they werenot rea l ly used foranything. Energy con-servation and improvedsecurity were also keyconsiderations. The officeof the manager has beenmoved to a more accessibleand better-suited location.

The m a i l r o o m haschanged over the summeralso. It has been paintedand carpeted. The mostnoticeable change is themailboxes. More have beenadded, giving each memberof the facu l ty , each

organization and eachhousing unit a mailbox. Inbetween them is a windowfor service and a mail drop.

The services of themailroom are increasing. Itis now open 8:00 A.M. - 4:30P.M., on Saturdays. Both13<P and 15<f stamps are soldin the mailroom. Bulkmailings will soon bepossible.

Overall the people in thebasement of Main Hall arevery pleased with what hastaken place during thesummer. Winter has hadthe goal to "make the

books to re a t t r a c t i v eenough to make peoplewant to come in, even if it isjust to browse." She islooking for feedback on thechanges, especially on thenew policy of clerk service

for obtaining textbooks.Winter would like to "thankthe Administrative Ad-visory Committee forhaving the confidence in usto give us the opportunity

to make this a first-ratecollege bookstore." KathyBlohpwiak, the mailroomsupervisor, is grateful thatshe has a mailroom whichlooks, acts and is treatedlike a mailroom should.

campus. Although con-

fused at first, they fit inquickly and become part ofthe St. Norbert community. They can look back in acouple of months to the firstweek and laugh, as many

students do. College is aunique learning exper-ience and hopefully St.Norbert will be the buildingblock for the freshmen andtheir futures. Good luckand enjoy!
