a preview of the book, Snack Foods, by Joel

Todero

to be released on June 21st, 2015

Page 2: Snack Foods Zine

You are holding a preview zine of Snack Foods, a

book by Joel Todero. This is a zine to give you a

taste of what the book will be like! This book is

going to have lots of different kinds of writing

from lots of different kinds of people, so be

open to it! Maybe you will find something that

you really like, and it will spark a memory, or

compel you do something you had been

meaning to! I don’t know! Just be as open to it

as possible, and make sure that you laugh along.

Some things will be deep and poetic and other

things will be funny and laughable. Reading will

bring you into the minds of a multitude of

modern day teenagers and their thoughts and

pictures put down onto paper. Join me in this

cool adventure of book making, and check out

this zine, and then pass it on to a friend of yours.

come home, eat a banana, and go to sleep. do it all over again.

isn’t this the optimal way of LIVING? i am

watching Steve Roggenbuck videos on a laptop

while riding my bike off a cliff. good thing i have

a helmet! lil cranium saver. turns out not

everything goes the way that you think it will.

dust collects on things you don’t want to deal

with anymore. you push back memories you’d

rather not remember, don’t tell me you don’t, i

know you do. this recurring dream of falling

down a small flight of stairs, but end up waking

up in bed every time. it happens over and over.

now i am actually falling off the cliff. i ditch my

bike and pull a parachute string. hover down

and slowly touch the river below. there i go,

floating downstream. so long.

I AM FLOATING SOMEWHERE IN THE OCEAN

my bed is a pile of salvaged recyclables. like a

raft in the ocean, except it doesn't hurt the

environment. im just floating towards the

recycling plant where i belong. on the sides of

my foreign vessel dolphins swim by. i steer

with a Hefty brand garbage bag that’s blowing

in the wind. how did i end up here anyway? a

single bird is flying overhead but instead of

chirping, every time it opens its beak i hear

Mozart playing. the beauty of nature, let me

tell ya. there’s a large leather bag to my side,

with some things inside. there is a notepad

and pencil, a pistol, and a saxophone. the

three most destructive things mankind has

created. great. i then proceed to play smooth

jazz for hours until the sun falls slowly over the

horizon. i want to go to sleep on my recyclable

raft.

it’s the dead of winter; i miss the air conditioner

i’m not creative, uncreative if anything. call me

John F Kennedy because i have a collection of

bomb ass ties (not really, just kidding).

frantically throw your folded clothes in your

drawers and closets and in the street. disregard

what seems to be the standard. be yourself and

be who you believe you should be. sometimes

i laugh right in the future’s face. HA. FUCK U

FUTURE. other times it intimidates me.

whatever. if i throw a bag of potatoes in the

street and a car runs over them, are they now

mashed potatoes? are they just run over by a

car? either way they are still potatoes, that’s

what really matters. do you see what i’m

getting at here? potatoes are a metaphor for

people!

RAISIN BRAN IS PROBABLY THE BEST CEREAL EVER jumping into a pool of yellow glowing liquid while

rich, deep, full synth chords play. time has

slowed down and i am in the middle of a

cannonball and i can see bats flying over my

head in the almost-darkness. friends surround

me and are laughing in slow motion as i fly

through the air. the sun has changed the whole

scene to a tinted and washed dark orange and

purple color. it’s like i put on a filter but it’s real

life. the liquid is lukewarm, sort of like someone

didn’t put a bowl of soup in the microwave long

enough. there is no word in the human dictionary

to describe this feeling. i’m done pretending that

nothing matters all the time. i wish there was

some way i could hook up my brain to a screen

so you could see what i'm picturing right now.

there’s no way that can happen though, so i will

just continue trying to explain through words.

You sit there with an empty vat of chili and wish that it had not been your last meal because you are better than minced meat And the sky opens up and a hand reaches down It pats your tummy and then your head like a father to his baby boy And gives you the promise that is this life This air you breathe The sky you see It is not a bowl of minced meat But a can of soup To sink in.

here are fist bumps on

the train. i have a lot

that’s on my brain.

there’s still a lot of

things to do. i still don’t

think i have met you.

Hi! My name is Joel

Todero and I have

made this zine and am

making Snack Foods, a

book filled with

poems and stories and

writings and pictures

and all kind of cool

things! I have a

Kickstarter going on

right now that’s

helping me get funds

to get Snack Foods

printed! You can find

it on www.kickstarter.com by typing in “Joel Todero.” The

Kickstarter campaign ends on May 7th, 2015. This book is

going to be really cool and I am really excited about it! If

you are able to donate, it would be incredibly appreciated.

For about myself, I live in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and am

17 years old. I play in a really cool band, Creeks, and have

shows at my house. I like to ride bike a lot and go on walks

with friends. This whole book thing would not have been

possible without the support of a lot of them. I hope you

are having a beautiful day today.
