This is a very exciting time for Glenfield SeniorNet. We have justreplaced all eight of our desktop computers in Room 14 with brandnew ones. Some of our existing ones were 10 years old, so we areroaring up to date. For those with some knowledge of thistechnology - the new ones have an Intel i5 processor with 8 Gigsof RAM so will cope with the most demanding tasks. They alsohave solid state drives. Together with our recently acquired fibrefor the internet, you should see big changes in speed.

Room 15 also sees changes, with the best remaining machines beingconcentrated there. No doubt, Doug Turner, our Tuition Manager, will ensure that apps (programs) that are the most demanding, suchas Excel, will be hosted in Room 14.

There is a new energy in the Committeewith three of our members, Anne Simpson,Barbara Heath and Frances Carrucaninitiating a reach out to Retirement Centres(“The Retirement Village Project”). Thisrequired a lot of setting up and theinvaluable input of Doug Turner, and alsoPeter Ashley as our inside man. The firstRetirement Centre to benefit was the BertSutcliffe Village in Birkdale. We had agreat reaction and it went very well withover 40 at the initial meeting and over 25involved in the ensuing weekly classes.Next off the block is The Orchards. Manythanks to Allan Rouse and Barbara Heathfor their tutoring in this challenging newenvironment.

With each village we anticipate leaving anucleus of existing talented residents tocarry on the work. This has happened atthe Bert Sutcliffe.

The SeniorNet Federation held its AGM andSymposium on the second week in May andI represented our Learning Centre.

The Federation Chairman from the Eden-Roskill Learning Centre spoke of the statusof the Federation. There are 71 Centres; thelatest Centre opened last year on Waihekeand four closed during the year. Themembership is just under 14,000. There isa significant increase in new members of ayounger age and women far outnumber men.

The payment to Centres will continue at$1.25 an hour for skills-based learning. Atrial is underway until 30th June 2018 ofpayment to non-skill based learning such asSpecial Interest Groups.

In the days of Government assistance, eachCentre reported on its learning sessions tiedto 15 categories of learning. Reporting on

Greetingsthese categories is maintained in order togive an indication of where members’interest lies. Last year the most popularcategory was introduction to portabledevices – iPads, tablets and phones. Nextcame Maintenance, including organizingfiles and folders on the PC and in the clouds, and How-do-I. Exploring Operating systemsfollowed and then Social Media andGenealogy. The fifth most popular sessionscovered graphics and image enhancing.

The report from Grant Sideway the CEO,indicated that the Federation’s involvementwith the Census has given him inspirationfor suggesting a role for SeniorNets inoffering general help to the community.Almost 2000 people received help withcompleting the Census forms.

Grant’s interaction with the Minister forSeniors regarding Government funding has

Report on the SeniorNet Federation AGM and Symposium.

not been so positive since Christmas and hewas not boosting expectation of a return offunding having been told to wait for theBudget.

Speakers at the Symposium were a mix. Thefirst were from the Census group of NZ Statsand spoke well. A couple of points thatinterested me: data from people not at homeon census night is repatriated to their home.It would have been interesting to know howthey linked the addresses. Once the initialcollection is verified – all names are strippedout, so no one can be identified in the results. When SeniorNet Glenfield Genealogy groupmeet in 2068 they will not be able to findrelatives on Census data as we do now.

The next speaker was a lawyer speaking onactions to be taken regarding you leavingyour digital footprint in the digital world. She spoke at length on Facebook, coveringthe ability to memorialize an account. Shegave some detail on Google’s requirementsto hand over personal data to an executor. Our next General Meeting will cover thistopic. Her colleague spoke on cryptocurrency. He commented that you can buybitcoins in Australia but not here. That doesnot appear to be the situation, however, haveany members brought any crypto currencyyet? Two applications that were new to me weredescribed and demonstrated. Zoom is anapplication for running conferences andseminars on the web. When such an activityis underway, screens can be shared, and awhite board used; videos and images can beshared. The application works on all devicesand we saw a group meeting with a laptop,a tablet and a phone.

The next application was MS SWAY.Another interesting session with Sway beinga PowerPoint on steroids. It is part of Office365 of which we have spare on-line copies, and I will try for a workshop sometime soon.

Talking of workshops, please be aware thatthe sessions highlighted in the schedule arethe sets of workshops that have beendeveloped from courses. The content ofeach session is given so that the specificsessions of interest to you can be chosen andattended.

One workshop that I have been asked to addis to give members an idea of what is onoffer regarding photography and imageediting. We have workshops exploring theuse of digital cameras, various applicationsfor editing the images that you have taken, and the various ways of sharing the images,on paper and in the cloud. If it goes ahead Ithink there will be at least four tutors tocover the options. A date will be publishedasap.

There is a large Windows 10 update goingout to machines at the moment. It is calledthe April Update so it’s late already. Thereis a new button on the tool bar, next toCortana called Timeline. A click displaystasks that you have been working on for thelast four days. The Esc key closes thedisplay window. The most significantimprovements of the update appear to be inthe Edge browser and will be covered in thenext Internet workshop set.

See you at the Mayfield Centre.Doug
