The SMU-BCA-WDA Productivity and Leadership Development Programme is a flagship programme tailored for the building & construction industry. It aims to provide participants with a broader strategic vision of the construction business environment at a time when the industry is experiencing growing complexities & increased competitiveness. Drawing on the rich experience of industry leaders, this programme is part of BCA’s Built Environment Strategic Leadership Development initiative to develop a quality workforce which would anchor and advance the building and construction industry.

It also cultivates a platform to exchange ideas and visions among diverse players from the industry. While it facilitates an understanding of the complex market & process-oriented issues that drives the industry, the programme also prepares senior executives to be dynamic leaders; building sustainable competitive advantages of individual firms along the value chain of the building industry. To further enhance each module, insights are shared by industry leader firms through industry-specific case-studies. Designed and facilitated by the Singapore Management University (SMU), this programme aims to elevate the way leaders manage for performance excellence, business transformation and organizational growth to deliver a quality and sustainable built environment.

Mr. NEO Kok Beng is President & CEO of AWAK Technologies. AWAK is developing the platform technology for sorbent-based dialysis generation and the 1st world peritoneal-based automated wearable artificial kidney. The company is the 2011 finalist of the Wall Street Journal’s Asia Innovation Award, the 2011 IES Engineering Achievement Award, and 2010 winner of the US Department of Veterans Affairs Innovation Initiative. Kok Beng has worked and set up companies in China (Shanghai), USA (Silicon Valley) and Philippines.

Kok Beng is an Affiliate Faculty with the Science, Technology & Globalization program of the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He is also on the Faculty of Executive Education for the 2010 & 2011 Innovation in Economic Development (IFED) programs for global leaders in innovation policy, strategy and management. He develops cases on technology policy and technology diplomacy.

He is also on the Academic Committee of the Singapore-Stanford Biodesign, and initiative by A*STAR and EDB to develop the next generation of medical technology innovators. Besides developing the curriculum, he also serves as teaching faculty covering topics in market analysis, medical device regulation and healthcare reimbursements.

Kok Beng is Fellow, Vice-President & Council Member of the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES). Awarded the Fellow status for his works, he founded initiatives such as Science & Technology Policies studies, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Network with NUS Faculty of Engineering, Technology Entrepreneurship and Angel Investments. He also sits on management Board of IES Academy, the training arm of the institution.

ADEL F DIMIAN PhD,North Dakota State University

Adel is a Practice Associate Professor of Management in the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University. He joined SMU after serving nearly 19 years with 3M in varied and increasing responsibilities in technical and business management worldwide. Adel was awarded nine patents for novel chemistry solutions.

Having spent three years based in Singapore, he was appointed regional business development manager, and was responsible for 3M’s Asia electronics portfolio.

Prior to moving back to Singapore and joining SMU, Adel was appointed vice president and general manager for 3M’s healthcare IT compliance business unit in New York City. He has worked in a spectrum of industries which included the healthcare, memory technology, commercial brand identity and graphic design, IT, and electronic market segments.

He received his formal education in the sciences, liberal arts, and business administration earning a BS and PhD degrees in chemistry, and an MBA with honours from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. His expertise is strategy, innovation, process improvement and general management.

TAN hWEE hOON PhD,

Purdue University

Having earned her PhD in Management from

the Krannert School, Purdue University in

December 1996, Hwee Hoon taught at the

School of Business at the National University

of Singapore from 1990 to 2005 and has

been with the Lee Kong Chian School of

Business, SMU since December 2005.

Her research interests are in the areas of

interpersonal trust, cross cultural awareness

and emotional management at the

workplace. Hwee Hoon was also the Asia-

Pacific Editor of the Journal of World Business

from 2000-2004, having articles published

in many international journals, including the

Academy of Management Journal, Strategic

Management Journal, Journal of Applied

Hwee Hoon is actively involved in Executive

Teaching, both in English and Chinese;

CROSS CULTURAL MANAgEMENT We will examine issues related to working in a cross-cultural environment, and in particular, managing in a cross-cultural context. Working in a cross border environment has become a norm in most organisations. Therefore what should one do to enhance one’s cross-cultural management sensitivity and to work harmoniously with co-workers and stakeholders from different cultures and nationalities?

Through experiential exercises, we will work with participants on what it is like being in a different culture and having to interact with people from a culture that one is not familiar with. In doing so, we will highlight the need to adopt sophisticated stereotyping to enable us to better work with others. Further, we will introduce skills and competencies required to function in a cross-cultural environment. A case study will be used to explore management issues such as leadership, motivation in a cross cultural environment.

SAPAN AgARWAL Masters Degree in TechnologyIIIT (Hyderabad, India)

Sapan Agarwal is the Director for the Environment and Building Technologies Group, Asia Pacific. He has a comprehensive understanding of the global market dynamics and years of training and experience in these industries.

Sapan has authored a number of market research, as well as, strategy studies on diverse subjects ranging from communication protocols within building automation to filtration technologies in the air purification markets. He has also worked on strategic consulting projects advising clients on market trends and strategies and also helps them position themselves on growth trajectories.

Among his key projects are; Market due diligence assessment and growth strategy validation for world wear and fusion markets, Analyzing and benchmarking competing technologies in the residential air purification markets along with business strategies for market participants, critical evaluation of the American and European integrated facilities management markets and competitor benchmarking with strategies for market entry, and demand side evaluation of the building automation markets researching and delineating customer purchase preferences along with assessing the technology roadmap for the industry.

LIEVEN DEMEESTER PhDUCLA

Lieven Demeester is Practice Assistant Professor of Operations Management Practice at Singapore Management University and was assistant professor at INSEAD from 2000 to 2008. He has taught Operations Management, Supply Chain Management and Project Management course to MBA students and a wide range of executives in Europe and Asia.

Lieven holds a diploma in electrical engineering from the University of Ghent in Belgium and a PhD in Operations and Technology Management from the Anderson School at UCLA. In his research, Lieven has examined the nature, role and methods for inventory reduction in manufacturing, the role of operations executives in strategy making, and the impact of recycling on operations strategy. His research has been sponsored by companies such as Siemens, IBM and BASF. His scientific articles have appeared in Management Science, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, and Interfaces.

Prior to his academic career Lieven worked as a Principal Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Operations Strategy practice in Los Angeles and before that he was a management consultant with Arthur D. Little in Brussels. As a management consultant Lieven has advised several industrial, utility, entertainment and Internet companies.

Annie Koh is Associate Professor of Finance and Dean of Office of Executive and Professional Education at the Singapore Management University. She also holds the position Academic Director, International Trading Institute@SMU. She received her PhD in International Finance from New York University (Stern School of Business) in 1988 where she was a Fulbright scholar. A frequently sought after conference speaker, panel moderator and expert commentator, Annie’s research interests are in Family Office and Family Business Research, REITS, Investor Behaviour, Alternative Investments, and Enterprise Risk Management. She has extensive experience in consulting and executive education for the corporate and public sectors, training professionals in leadership, management, directorship and private banking.

Instrumental in bridging academia and the industry, Annie has spearheaded many major partnerships between SMU and the business world such as the Human Capital Leadership Institute in partnership with the Ministry of Manpower, the International Trading Institute for commodities research and training, the Financial Training Institute for competency training, the BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre and the UOB-SMU Entrepreneurship Alliance. ELIzA qUEK MA, Birkbeck College, University of London

Eliza Quek is currently an Adjunct Faculty at SMU, where she teaches business management courses. Eliza earned her M.A in Manpower Studies from Birkbeck College, University of London. She has extensive international training experience in enhancing leadership competencies in the areas of strategic management, issues identification, ethics and crisis management; building high performing teams; performance management; creative problem solving and innovation; change management; coaching and mentoring staff. ADAM WONg Fellow CPA

Adam Wong is the Executive Director of Mayvest Asia Pte Ltd, a financial consulting firm. He is also an adjudicator of the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre in Singapore. Prior to his current appointment, he was a General Manager with Standard Chartered Bank in both Singapore and Hong Kong. He has also held key management positions with other major banks, with 22 years of successful track record in Cash Management, eCommerce, Corporate Banking and Trade Finance and Small & Medium Enterprises.

Having strong strategic orientation and regional exposure in South East Asia and Hong Kong, he is credited with significantly growing global banks’ SME assets by 450% and net profit by 140% over a three-year period in Singapore. MIChAEL NETzLEy PhD, University of Minnesota

Michael serves on the faculty of Singapore Management University where he teaches corporate communication, social media and executive leadership programmes. Previously, he served as the founding director of the Centre for Communication and Teaching Excellence.

Michael has also taught at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and held faculty appointments in Slovenia, Finland, Japan, Germany and Argentina.

Michael’s research and teaching focus on the corporate communication function and leadership in an Asian context. He is active with consulting and executive education. He has worked with clients such as OCBC, 3M, Intercontinental Hotel Group, IBM, Microsoft, SUN, UEM Group (Malaysia), Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Central Provident Fund, GIC (Singapore), Keppel Offshore and Marine, Neptune Orient Lines, Mettler Toledo, and CARE.org.

Currently Michael is authoring his fourth book which examines best practices in corporate communication and reputation management in South East Asia. Michael is an experienced case writer who has authored or served as managing editor of more than forty corporate communication teaching cases.

of Organizational Behavior and Human

Resources Practice at Lee Kong Chian

School of Business, Singapore Management

University (SMU) and the winner of SMU

Innovative Teacher Award 2010. In 2009 and

2010 he was listed in the Lee Kong Chian

Dean’s Teaching Honour List.

Dr. Benoliel is the author, co-author, and

editor of the books titled, Negotiating

(2009); The Upper Hand (2006), Done Deal:

Insights from Interviews with the World’s

Best Negotiators (2005), and Negotiation

Excellence: Successful Deal Making (2011).

Some of Dr. Benoliel’s media interviews

COURSE STRUCTURE AND FEE The course fee for the core 12-day programme is SgD12,840 (including 7% GST) per person. An overall certificate of completion will be presented to participants who have successfully completed the 12-day programme. Participants who prefer a more targeted and focused approach have the option of signing up for any module based on their needs.

The course fee for each 2-day module is SgD2,354 (including 7% GST) and 1-day module is SgD 1,177 (including 7% GST) per person.

COURSE FEE SUBSIDy The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) will provide a course fee subsidy, capped at SgD6,000 to participants who attained the Certificate of Successful Completion of the SMU-BCA-WDA Productivity and Leadership Development Programme. The course fee subsidy is only applicable to Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) will be the administrator for the course fee subsidy grant.

Programme participants applying for the course fee subsidy will be tied to meeting the following conditions:

The award of the course fee subsidy would be subjected to the discretion of BCA on behalf of WDA in meeting all the stipulated funding criteria including the administration of the fund to best suit the objective of the Advanced Management Programme.

FUNDINg APPLICATION & DISBURSEMENTProgramme participants interested in the application of the course fee subsidy can submit the application form (FORM AMP 1), together with all relevant supporting documents. The complete application (with the supporting documents) must be received by BCA latest by 9 March 2012.

Upon BCA’s approval of the course fee subsidy, BCA shall disburse the subsidised sum directly to SMU in lieu of the 50% of the course fee. Processing time for WDA course fee subsidy will be 2 weeks upon receipt of complete application.

In the event that the participant and/or sponsoring organisation fails to meet any of the funding criteria before, during or after the completion of the programme, BCA reserves the right to reclaim the subsidised sum from the sponsoring organisation.

In today’s workplace, most jobs require knowledge as well as skills, which include the right attitude for the job, foundational and technical competencies. Many employers therefore look for and value workers with the right skills to do the job. Hence, WDA’s role is to develop and strengthen skills-based training for adult workers to upgrade and advance in their careers and lives, over and above academic upgrading pathways.

To achieve this, WDA is developing a Continuing Education and Training (CET) infrastructure under the CET Masterplan, announced by the Prime Minister in Feb 2008. We work with many partners, including employers, industry associations, the Union and training organisations, to develop skills-based training that are relevant to industries, accessible and open to all in the workforce - young and old, from rank and file to professionals and executives. A key initiative under the Masterplan is to continue to strengthen the Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) system as a national credentialing system for skills. WSQ is relevant to and recognised by industry, embraces adult learning principles, and provides means and pathway to help all workers learn for life, and advance with skills.
