Introductions
* Used to send or receive Short Message Service (SMS) transmissions * 160 character limit per message * Example, to send a message to an AT&T mobile phone with the number 415-‐123-‐4567, the email would be addressed as [email protected]

What is an SMS Gateway?
* Distribute alerts and reminders * Send out information where internet access is spotty or unavailable * Notify volunteers when a replacement is needed at the last minute * Notify event participants of last minute changes * SMS Marketing Campaigns

Setup Overview
* Setup is a new interface from the one on book.civicrm.org * Register for a Developer Central Product * Important: Sending US only, less than 10k per month, sign up for US Long Number. * There is a tough captcha at the bottom, just keep scrolling until you get a clear one * After a successful registration you get an email with username, password and Customer ID.

* Configure the Gateway * Copy down you API ID at the bottom * You now have everything you need from Clickatell to test your SMS gateway.

CiviCRM Setup
* Test the gateway using the methods laid out in the chapter "Everyday tasks". * Until you have purchased credits Clickatell will replace the content with thank you text like the message below:
"Thanks for testing Clickatell's gateway coverage. You will be able to change the content of your message after your initial purchase of message credits."

* Open contact’s profile * Click Actions * Click Send SMS

* You can also send a personalized SMS to many people at once. * You can do a search and select Send SMS to Contacts from the Actions pulldown. * You can also choose groups by going to Mailings – New SMS
