Welcome Fr. Lou Cunningham and Deacon Tyler Johnson

Even though we are sad to see Fr. Cody leave us for his new assignment at Sacred Heart Parish in Bellingham and Western Washington University Newman Center, we gratefully welcome Fr. Lou as our new parochial vicar and Deacon Tyler for the summer.Father Lou was ordained to the priest-hood on June 9 and Dn. Tyler was ordained to the transitional diaconate on June 23. We are very blessed to have both of these fine young men with us. As you always do, let us welcome them with open arms and encourage them to use their God-given gifts and talents. More from them next week in the Pastor’s Notebook.New online giving platform

I must admit that I resisted moving to online giving last time because it seemed so time-consuming and com-plicated. I liked writing my check and putting it in my envelope. But now, writ-ing checks, tearing them off, and putting them in the weekly envelopes is becom-ing too difficult for me. The seemingly simple everyday tasks are becoming beyond my ability. Therefore I am personally grateful for the convenience of our new online giving platform through Pushpay. If you missed the insert in last week’s

bulletin, simply go to our parish web-site and scroll down to the new online giving platform section. It is very easy and you can cancel your present online giving through OSV. We will no longer be using their service after September 1, 2018. We will continue to remind folks of the need to change to a new platform and assist them in any way we can. This new platform is easy to use for our regular Sunday offerings, our faith rais-ing campaign, St. Vincent de Paul, and other extraordinary stewardship oppor-tunities. Pushpay is secure and you can access your giving history, change your giving amount, manage your account simply and easily – all from your phone.I hope that you will find this helpful in planning your stewardship giving in an easy and secure way. Thank you for all those who have already signed up.July 15, 5pm Life Teen Mass on the Grass & Parish Picnic

Please save the date and plan to join us as we celebrate Holy Eucharist and enjoy an evening of great ethnic food, family fun, live musical entertainment, s’mores when it gets dark and, finally, Lakefair fireworks. If you'd like to volun-teer and give us a hand, please contact Rex Yabut or Kimmy Jones at the parish office.Food for thought…

A visiting priest was attending a men’s

breakfast in Ohio farm country. He asked one of the impressive older farmers in attendance to say grace that morning. After all were seated, the older farmer began, “Lord, I hate buttermilk.” The priest opened one eye and won-dered to himself where this was going. The farmer then loudly proclaimed, “Lord, I hate lard.”The priest was overly worried. However, without missing a beat, the farmer prayed on, “And Lord, you know I don’t care much for raw white flour.”Just as the priest was ready to stand and stop everything, the farmer contin-ued, “But Lord, when you mix them all together and bake them up, I do love fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up that we don’t like, when life gets hard, but we just don’t understand what you are saying to us, we just need to relax and wait until you are done mixing, and probably it will be some-thing even better than biscuits. Amen.”In Christ, through the intercession of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati, I love you.

Installation of the exterior brick wall on the school-side storage addition began this week. The same company and the same craftsman that laid the brick in 1994 for the Gathering Space exterior walls are doing so for our current church renovation project. Both men are now in their 80’s and the quality of their work is superb! The church organ that provides the wonderful worship music we all love and appreciate is original to the building. With technology that dates back to 1964 we are blessed to have available the same organ technician that assisted us in the 1994 church remodel. During that renovation the organ was relocated from the old choir loft to its present location at ground level. The following elements were completed this week:• Store front glass windows installed in the Gathering

Space addition• Wall insulation complete for the restrooms and kitchen• HVAC rough-in complete• Fire sprinkler rough-in completeThank you for the continued prayer support for all those involved directly or indirectly in the project.

Hello my name is Jon Corcoran. I have been an official parish-ioner for almost two years. My wife, Christy and I are high school Confirmation catechists along with six other wonder-ful people. Jamie and Jessi Oakland are the stewards and it has been a great joy to bear witness to the love of Christ with all of them.

Our family was received into the Church on September 11, 2016 and we became catechists in late October of 2016. You can do the math. Our journey to the Catholic Church through the Protestant church is a story for another time, but it is inter-twined with the ministry we found ourselves in. Our family had just come off of an intense year and half of studying the catechism, church history, the sacraments and liturgy of the Church–it represented the culmination of our desire for the Eucharist, the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the life of the liturgical year in the parish.So. in October, we found ourselves one Sunday morning being asked to fill out a time and talent survey. I was a bit overwhelmed with all the options. I wanted someone to just ask me to do something–anything really. I looked at the card and wondered, should I sign up for something I am good at or for something that will make me uncomfortable? I could see the benefits in doing both. I looked over and saw my family filling out the cards–even my youngest at the time filled one out. So I did what anyone would do in my predicament

and marked every yes by drawing a line straight down all the options. My wife laughed because we had been talking about getting involved but really couldn’t decide if we should find the greatest need area or the place of our strength. I thought, “the first person that calls me, is what I am supposed to do.”Well, this is a true story. That night Jessi Oakland introduced herself and said, "My husband and I were praying about who to ask to journey with a new catechist group. I know you've only been Catholics for a month but we're looking for people who can be a witness to the love of Christ–you will be sup-ported the whole way and your family’s journey to the church will be a gift to the students.” We told her that we would pray about it, but to be honest, we knew that Holy Spirit had brought us something special. In the last two years, we have been able to journey with young Catholics to the Sacrament of Confirmation. It has been a great honor. The unexpected, but now certain, reason that we love being involved with Confirmation prep is the way it connects us to the Church. There is so much in our disposable, self-conscious culture that bleeds into our thinking: someone else will do it, what good can I really do, will people notice me. But the life of the Church through relationships with others stands in stark contrast. The body of Christ is alive!Thank you!

STEUBENVILLE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!Steubenville NW is a Catholic conference for teens from all around the Pacific NW. Every year 1200 teens gather in Spokane to grow in faith and encounter Jesus through the guidance of national Catholic speakers and musicians. Serving that many teens requires 50-70 vol-unteers. Historically, 70% of those volunteers have had a connection to Saint Michael Parish! We still need many more volunteers. The conference is July 27-29. We can coordinate rides and car pools. Cost for meals and lodging is $75 or whatever you can afford. Contact Jessi Oakland at [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions.

Dear Saint Michael Parishioners,As we head into the summer, I would like to draw your attention toward an extraordinary opportunity for fam-ilies of children aged 5 years old by August 31, 2018. This upcoming school year, our two Kindergarten classes will have smaller class sizes than in previous years. Our projected class sizes present an extremely special opportunity for your children to receive an out-standing Kindergarten education at your parish school with an excellent student to teacher ratio. If your child is already enrolled at another school, please consider the life-long benefit he or she would receive by building their academic and spiritual foundation in our Kindergarten program. Please call the school office at (360) 754-5131 or contact us through our website, stmikesolympia.org, for more information.Blessings,Connor Geraghty Principal

St. Michael Parish School"A family of families"

They're not just for Lent and Advent! Life is not meant to be lived alone. Our faith is a faith of community, meant to be shared as we grow in love of God and one another. We are nurtured in our small groups, an environment where we feel safe and able to talk about the most difficult issues in our lives. The small group model has been the catalyst that has taken countless seekers and formed them into true disciples as they experience a growth in faith like never before. Having a vibrant and growing small group community is not only a pastoral priority, it's one of the major goals of the SMP Strategic Plan. Catholics engaged in faithful and faith-filled small groups are Catholics on fire for the faith. It's as simple as that. Many small groups continue to meet year round and are open to new members, and we'd certainly love to grow the number of groups meeting year round. Want to form a group and start an amazing journey? Want to plug in to an existing group? No matter where you are in life, there's a group for you. Check out our website to get connected or contact Michaela Moreau to find a good fit: [email protected].
