No Smoking Day 2011Wednesday 10th March

What is thisIn Feb 2011 Sector 3 Solutions came to St Mary’s

centre in South Shields to train Jigsaw Project and Key Project staff on Smoking Cessation in order to get support workers to start working with our young people to get them to stop smoking.

The training was very informative however we were aware that young people aged 16-25 are not interested in giving up smoking and are also difficult to get engaged. The training provider did not have material aimed at this hard to reach age group, and so we were aware that the task of Smoking Cession would be a difficult one

As a result we decided to hold an event on No-Smoking Day 2011 and invited Sector 3 to come along to see some examples of how we try to engage young people

What did we do?

Jigsaw Project and Key Project then held a ‘Smoking Event’ at St Marys on No-Smoking Day. Sector 3 came along to help run the event and provide some information on smoking and how to stop

The event was open to smokers and non-smokers alike, whether they wanted to give up or not – in order to get a debate going – with they aim to get young smokers to think about giving up … it was not an event to tell them to stop

Who attended

9 young people aged 19-24

From Jigsaw Project, Key Project and Places for People

Half male and half female

We had a mixture of some who smoked and some who don’t

What happenedThere were 4 stations

~ I smoke and I don’t want to stop~ I smoke and I want to stop~ I used to smoke and I have stopped~ I have never smoked

The young people sat at the stations appropriate to

them

The debate The young people

discussed their experiences and views on smoking within their group and then the group discussed them as a whole

There were lots of interesting points and common themes that came out

ACTIVITIESThere were various activities throughout the

session to get people thinking about smoking habits and effects of smoking

There was a quiz, some videos from You Tube covering the effects of smoking, the smoking habits of a toddler, a CO test, a Face Aging test, a money saving activity

After each activity the young people were given the opportunity to move to another stationThe hope was some would move from the ‘I don’t want to stop’ to ‘I do want to stop’ station

Did anyone move?At the start of the

session there was one person at the ‘I want to stop’ station

By the end of the session there was three people sat there

Stop smoking advise was given – the options on how to stop and where to get help

After some lunch, three of the participants then supported one young person to go to the chemist to see a cessation nurse to start his cessation programme. He is now on patches and an inhilator

Was it a success? Those young people who wanted to stop said it was

‘because of my health’; ‘if I have children in the future’; ‘to save money’

The aim of the session was to get young people to think about smoking – the fact that three of them actually decided to stop (1 third of the group!) – with one actually getting in touch with a cessation nurse and stopping there and then; was a fantastic success!

What did the young people think?

All the young people involved said that they thought the session was going to be boring and we were just going to preach to them to stop, but instead it had been really interesting

Using videos from You Tube helped to get the message across as it used real people

A comment from a young person on the clip of a todler smoking “It is funny at first but then when you realise what he is doing it is sick and makes you realise the effects of smoking on kids”

One young person asked if we could do a similar event featuring alcohol

100% of attendees said they enjoyed the session

100% of attendees said they found the information useful
