DX260-1xx SMOKEHEAD (Cabled)

The DX260-1 Smokehead is plugged in to aconnector positioned on its cradle base.

The base is then connected to the hostequipment.

The appropriate Sampling Pipe is thenconnected to the Smokehead.

The Smokehead should be returned to basewhen not being used.

DX260-1xxBT SMOKEHEAD (Wireless)The DX260-1BT wireless Smokehead uses wirelesstechnology to communicate directly with thehost computer.

The Smokehead has rechargeable batteries builtin to enable approximately 1.5 hours ofcontinuous use between charges.

The Smokehead should be returned to itscharger between tests to keep the batteriescharged.

The Smokehead will go into hibernation mode ifit is not being communicated to by thecomputer whilst it is off the charger base forlonger than approximately 6 minutes.

Vehicle emissions are dangerous. Inparticular, Carbon Monoxide (CO) froma vehicle exhaust is a highly poisonousgas. If breathed in, it is absorbed by theblood and will result in greatlyslowed reactions and if absorbedin sufficient quantity can be fatal.Published figures show that aconcentration of 0.3% CO in the air canbe fatal if inhaled for 30 minutes.

3. SAMPLING PIPESConnect the appropriate sampling pipe to thesampling head.

SAMPLING PIPE DX210-4AThe sampling pipe DX210-4A can be used for allvehicles, but for convenience of use alternativepipes are available.

SAMPLING PIPE DX210-6Sampling pipe DX210-6 is used for verticalexhausts. Hang the sampling pipe and thesampling head as shown in the illustration. Forvery high exhausts, an extension pole 1.5 m or 2m length may be fitted to the sampling headusing an extension kit DX260-160L (1.5m) orDX260-160H (2.0m) as illustrated.

SAMPLE PIPE DX210-5CThe sampling pipe DX210-5C has remote controland is used to access mid-chassis exhaustson large commercial vehicles. To use, hold thesampling pipe and the sampling head as shownin the illustration with the arm rest under theforearm. The head of the pipe has a pivotingaction so that the 'aim' of the pipe can bechanged by moving one arm forwards orbackwards relative to the other arm.

Use the hand lever to operate the jaws and clampthe pipe in position, then allow the remotecontrol and the sampling head to rest on thefloor.

DX210-4A

DX210-6

NOTE:Before fitment of a sampling pipe, inspect its 'O' ring for damage and renewif necessary (order part number DX210-5/60). Periodically apply a smear ofgrease to the 'O' ring to assist fitment ofthe sampling pipe to the sampling head.

CAUTION:The results of free acceleration testingwill be affected by changes in samplingpipe diameter and/or length. Onlygenuine pipes must be used andtheir design must not be altered in anyway. The smokehead body must alwaysbe positioned in clean air and away fromexhaust fumes when in use.

WARNING:Sampling pipes can get very hot; takecare when disconnecting from thesampling pipe.

USING THE SMOKEHEAD OUTSIDEIf it is necessary or desirable to test a vehicleoutside the workshop, the following points mustbe borne in mind.

The sampling head is weather resistant and maybe used in temperatures down to a minimum of-15ºC. But in the case of severe weather andheavy rain – DO NOT USE OUTSIDE!

4. OPERATIONWARMING-UPSwitch on power to the base unit. The ‘Power On’light will illuminate.

There is a warm-up time of 5 to 15 minutesdependent on the outside temperature. Duringthis time the Smokemeter will not function.

WIRELESS SMOKEHEAD OPERATION(DX260-1BT)For wireless systems the operation of theequipment is identical to the cabledsystems but a wireless Smokehead (DX260-1BT)is utilised.

When the equipment is first switched on thesmokehead should be firmly positioned onto itscharging cradle and the unit should be allowedto charge for a minimum of five to six hours (orpreferably left overnight) to fully charge thebatteries.

The equipment screen will prompt the user toreturn the smokehead to its charging cradlebetween tests.

This must be obeyed in order to proceed further.Failure to return the smokehead to its base willresult in a depletion of the battery charge.

The test will not continue until the smokeheadhas been returned.

Ensure the Smokehead is firmly positioned on itscharger base.

Blue flashing LED indicates battery chargingoperation.

5. BATTERY CHARGINGCARE, MODES & ENDURANCE:The DX260-1BT wireless Smokehead contains aMulti-Cell Rechargeable Battery designed to givea maximum of 1.5 hours endurance from a fullcharge.

The Smokehead must always be replaced onthe charging cradle in between tests.

To recharge, the Smokehead must be returnedto and correctly located on its charging cradle. This will maximise the battery endurance and isalso necessary for test results to be printed.

On the handle of the Smokehead is a highlyvisible Blue Light emitting Diode (LED). This LEDgives indication of the status of the Smokeheadwhether or not it is on its charging Cradle.

The nominal endurance of the internal Batterypack is 1.5 hours continuous use from a fullcharge and cold start. This will vary according toambient temperature. For optimum use and

WARNING:The power supply and PC are notweather protected and for the safetyof both the operator and the equipment, these parts MUST be kept undercover in inclement weather conditions.

NOTE:For details of software controlledprocedures, refer to the appropriatesoftware manual.

battery life, the smokehead should be removedfrom the charging cradle for the minimumamount of time and returned to the chargerimmediately after testing or as prompted by thesmoke test Software.

The rate of charging is dependent on acombination of Battery Voltage and BatteryTemperature.

If the Smokehead has seen reasonable use thecharger will switch to ‘Fast Charge’, takingapproximately 1.5 hours to fully recharge.

Once full terminal Voltage has been reached, thebattery charging rate is reduced to ‘TrickleCharge’.

When charging for a protracted period, forexample overnight, a trickle charge of 15 hourswill completely recharge the internal battery. Ablue LED on the Handle indicates the ChargingStatus.

It is strongly advised that the Charger Cradle beleft permanently switched ON with theSmokehead in situ overnight to ensure fulloperational usage at beginning of the workingday.

It is also strongly recommended that thebatteries be completely discharged on amonthly basis by setting the program to LiveReadings with the smokehead off the charger.

This could be done at the end of the workingday.

Please note that rechargeable batteries have afinite lifespan, therefore the battery pack willneed to be replaced periodically if thesmokehead is no longer sustaining sufficientcharge for correct operation. Please contact aProduct Support for battery replacementinformation.

LED INDICATION1. Smokehead removed from Charging Cradle:

■ LED ‘On’ continuously: Smokehead isrunning on internal Battery.
